November and December Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

And just like that, 2018 is over and done with…. Damn. What an interesting year.

I didn’t quite hit my overall reading goal, as I was hit with a couple of fairly long reading slumps throughout the year that really kicked my ass. However, I still read some pretty amazing books and I think that’s all that really counts in the end. Right?

Did you get a lot of reading done in November and December? Were you able to read all of the books on your TBR? Did you read any new favorites? What book did you like the least? What do you plan on reading in January?

  • The Dark Days Deceit (Lady Helen, #3) by Alison Goodman – physical book

I’m a little over a third of the way through this book and just like the previous two books in the series, I’m loving it. Goodman does such a great job mixing the paranormal with Regency England. And if you’re a fan of the tall, dark and handsome type then you’ll really enjoy Lord Carlston… Talk about a tortured soul. *insert googly eyes here*

  • Kingdom of Ash (Throne of Glass, #7) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book

I FINALLY finished this book after about 6 weeks of reading it. I’ll admit that November was a busy month for me and so I just didn’t get as much time to read, but this was also just an enormous story. I thought it was a solid finale, if maybe a bit drawn out.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Lair of Dreams (The Diviners, #2) by Libba Bray – physical book

It’s way past time for me to dive back into this series. I cannot wait to find out what’s going to happen next in this creepy book!

  • Kingdom of Ash (Throne of Glass, #7) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book

I can finally say that I’m on the home stretch with this novel. I’ve got about 200 pages left and you can really tell that it’s getting close to the climax. The action has amped up and all of the characters are finally starting to come together. I’m not ready for this series to end but I can tell it’s going to be one hell of a finale!

What did you recently finish reading?

Nothing… again.

  • The Dark Days Deceit (Lady Helen, #3) by Alison Goodman – physical book

I cannot wait to dive into this finale. This underrated trilogy is sooo good and I really wish more people would pick it up. Seriously, y’all need to get on this story and enjoy the ride! It’s the perfect mix of historical fiction and paranormal. Goodman does an amazing job of transporting you into Regency London.

Yes, yes, I’m still powering through this massive book. I haven’t had a whole lot of time to read it lately but luckily that’ll change over Thanksgiving weekend. I’m finally over halfway through the book and I’m fully invested in how this story is going to end. I’m also mentally preparing myself to have my heart ripped apart before the end of it. Maas is going to kill me, I just know it.

  • Give the Dark My Love (Give the Dark My Love, #1) by Beth Revis – audiobook

I finally finished this book yesterday and actually ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. It took awhile for me to really get into the story, as it has a bit of a slow start. However, I really loved the climax and that cliffhanger was genius. If you love a good antihero with a solid backstory, then I definitely recommend this book.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Dark Days Deceit (Lady Helen, #3) by Alison Goodman – physical book

When this book arrived in the mail yesterday, I did the biggest happy dance. I am soooo freaking excited for this conclusion to such an underrated trilogy. I cannot wait to find out how this story will end! Everyone needs to read this series, seriously. #HelenandCarlstonforever

What are you currently reading?

  • Kingdom of Ash (Throne of Glass, #7) by Sarah J. Mass – physical book
  • Give the Dark My Love (Give the Dark My Love, #1) by Beth Revis – audiobook

I still haven’t listened much to the audiobook lately. I plan to pick back up with that one today though, as it is a very interesting concept if a little slow this early on in the story. I’m also slowly making my way through the behemoth that is Kingdom of Ash. This book is massive and I’m going a little slower with it since I’d forgotten a lot of what happened previously. However, I am loving the story so far and am actually really invested in every POV (which hardly ever happens!). Then tension continues to build and I’m so scared to find out who won’t make it through the end.

  • Crystal Storm (Falling Kingdoms, #5) by Morgan Rhodes

This was a really great installment in this series. You can really feel all of the tension is building and coming down to the final climax. All of the characters have really developed and you can see the maturity in their thoughts and actions compared to the first book. It’ll be really bittersweet to finish this series. I’m just enjoying it so much!

What do you think you’ll read next?

I’ll finally be diving into some historical fiction next and then finally pick up The Last Magician, which seems to have a lot of fans and that synopsis really intrigues me. I can’t wait to dive in!

October Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

I know I probably say this every single month, but y’all, seriously, how is it already November?!?! This year seems like it has just been flying by and I’m not sure if this is how it’s going to be for the rest of my life. Next thing you know, I’ll blink and it’ll be 2032 and now I’m old as shit. NOT COOL AT ALL. But I digress… I did get some reading done during October, though I’ll admit that it wasn’t as much as I was hoping for. I’ve just had a lot of trouble sitting down and reading for long periods lately. My mind has kind of been all over the place which is unusual for me. However, I think this past week has finally gotten a little better and now that we’re truly into the holiday season, I foresee a lot of relaxing reading time by the fire… Bring. It. On.

I haven’t listened to Give the Dark My Love this week, as I’ve been dragged into this podcast series over the Hollywood Blacklist. However, I’m almost done with it and should get back into this interesting story soon!

I’m almost done with Crystal Storm and plan to finish it later today. This story is really ramping up and I cannot wait to see what’s going to happen next. This new little alliance going on is just interesting. I am loving all of the interaction between everyone! Sassy comments and the back-and-forths are giving me life right now. Magnus and Jonas are the real couple that we all need. Ha!

What did you recently finish reading?

Still nothing… Give me a break, y’all!

What do you think you’ll read next?

I plan to finally finish Kingdom of Ash next, before moving on to some historical fiction novels that I’ve been craving to pick up lately. If you read my last discussion post, you’ll know that fall/winter is the time where I love to pick up the genre. So expect a whole lot of historical fiction novel reviews in the coming months! 😉

What are you currently reading?

  • Give the Dark My Love (Give the Dark My Love, #1) by Beth Revis – audiobook
  • Crystal Storm (Falling Kingdoms, #5) by Morgan Rhodes – physical book

I’m really enjoying Give the Dark My Love so far. I’m about a quarter of the way through and it’s very interesting. It’s not quite what I first thought it was going to be, as it’s much more political and slower paced rather than action driven. I do enjoy all of the tension that’s building and can’t wait to see what will happen next.

Crystal Storm is wonderful as well. (No surprise there!) I haven’t read as much of this book as I would have liked, but I’ve just been super tired lately. I do plan to really dive back into this book in the next couple of days and finish it by this weekend. I really gotta find out how my sweet cupcakes are doing!

What did you recently finish reading?

Nothing since last week… Oops?

What do you think you’ll read next?

I will obviously be picking up Kingdom of Ash next. I don’t think I can put off the conclusion to this awesome series, especially after seeing how shiny and pretty the cover is when it was delivered yesterday. I mean, damn, does that book photo well. Then I plan to continue on with some zombies and then onto some paranormal historical fiction as we head into November.

What are you currently reading?

  • Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye – physical book
  • Sadie by Courtney Summers – audiobook

I finally finished Tower of Dawn last night and so I decided to pick up Jane Steele next. I mean, it’s October, right? Time to pick up some horror and thrillers, which I hardly ever do at any other time of year. I just like my science fiction and fantasy! But I’m really looking forward to this one, as I’ve heard some mixed things on it and can’t wait to see what I think about it.

I have also just started listening to Sadie, as recommended by my little love bug, Britt. She’s been obsessing over it lately and I’ve heard amazing things about it from other people as well. I love that the audiobook has a full cast. That always helps elevate an audiobook from being good to great for me personally.

  • Tower of Dawn (Throne of Glass, #6) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book

I will admit that I put off picking up this book because I just lost all interest in Chaol as a character. However, I was very surprised by just how much I enjoyed this book. It helped widen the scale of this world and had some of the best character development in the entire series so far. Also, can we just stand in moment in awe over some of the revelations that came to light?! Holy smokes, Batman! As if I wasn’t already super hyped enough for Kingdom of Ash, I may spontaneously combust waiting for its release now!!

What do you think you’ll read next?

Any one of these pretty babies is on my radar to pick up next. I’ll probably go with Crystal Storm first though, because I just cannot wait to see what happens next in this series. Also, that cover for Devils Unto Dust is just so freaking badass.

  • Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen – audiobook

Y’all miss me?! But seriously, ever since I went on vacation the first week of September, I just haven’t really been in the reading/blogging mood…. Don’t hate me! But either way, I’m back and ready to get back down book business. Is that a thing? Eh, it is now.

I’m about 75 pages away from finishing Tower of Dawn. Yes, I will openly admit that I wasn’t too excited about this book before I picked it up. While it’s probably still not my favorite in the series, it’s actually really enjoyable. And holy space balls, Batman! There is definitely some very important stuff going on and coming to light that I was not expecting from this book. So if you were one of those people that think you could probably skip this one, DO NOT DO THAT! Seriously, you really need to read it before the finale comes out next month. Then you can thank me for saving you from a terrible decision! No need to send gifts, just shower me in accolades. 😉

Have made zero progress in Orphan Monster Spy… Ah well, c’est la vie.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Love & Luck by Jenna Evans Welch – physical book

Super cute contemporary set in Ireland. While I’m not quite sure I enjoyed this one as much as the original, it was still a really fun read and I definitely recommend it. Warning: Cute Irish boys full steam ahead!

What do you think you’ll read next?

I honestly don’t know what I’ll be reading next but since we’re getting into October, it’s probably time to bust out some creepy/magic-themed novels. Plus, I just really need to find out what’s going to happen next in Falling Kingdoms. I need my Magnus to be alright!!!
