September Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

Y’all, I am happy to announce that I was finally able to bust through my reading slump in September! I’m so glad I was able to pick up some books that were able to pull me out of my slump and get back to truly enjoying reading. I may not be hitting double digits quite yet, but I’m still proud of the progress that I’m making. If you’re like me and struggle with reading slumps from time to time, I recommend a good binge of a sitcom or newly released show (my current go-to’s are The Mindy Project, New Girl, and The Boys). I also recommend trying a book outside of your normal genre! But with that being said, I see myself finishing out the rest of year really strong and am excited for the books I have on my October TBR!

Did you get a lot of reading done in September? Were you able to read all of the books on your TBR? Did you read any new favorites? What book did you like the least? What do you plan on reading in October?

End of Summer Recap Book Tag

Fall is officially almost here and I am so happy. I am not a fan of the summertime and all of its hellish heat. However, I saw this awesome book tag over on the lovely Scorpio Book Dreams blog and decided that it was a good time to look back over the books that I’ve read during the past few summer months. I’m always talking about books on my TBR, so this will be a nice change of pace to reflect on the books that I’ve already finished. Please feel free to tag yourself!

Which book can you not stop thinking about?

Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal

I just really enjoyed this story. It was a nice feel-good story that I think everyone would enjoy picking it up. It was the perfect summer read for me. I keep waiting to hear that Mindy Kaling has optioned the rights to adapt into a miniseries or movie. I think she has the perfect writing style for a story like this.

Which book would you rather not have read?

40381319

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

This was one of my most anticipated releases for this year.. but dear God, was it sooooooo long. And trust me, I don’t mind lengthy novels. However, I could really feel the length with this story. It took far too long to actually get into the meat of the story, which caused me to not feel the need to ever pick it up to read. I’ll just continue looking forward to the next installment of The Bone Season series and try to forget that this book caused it to get postponed.

What genre did you read the most?

Surprisingly enough, due to my recent reread of the Red Rising series, my top genre this past summer was science fiction. Which I’m actually really happy about because it is one of my favorite genres to pick up. Not to mention the fact that all of the books for that genre that I have read recently were really good. I’m also in currently in the middle of two more!

What book surprised you the most?

The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson

I figured I would enjoy this book (helloooo, I’m a sucker for historical fiction!), but I didn’t realize how much I would love this story and all of its characters. Rye has always been on my list of English villages I’d love to visit, but now I am DYING to go see it during the summer and channel my inner Beatrice.

Which book disappointed you the most?

Just look above a couple of questions and that should answer this one too…

What was your favorite cover?

42201395

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

Another lovely design by the supremely talented Charlie Bowater. I honestly love all of her designs.

What was your favorite summer release?

30075662._SY475_

Aurora Rising (The Aurora Cycle, #1) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

This book was just as fun and engaging as what I was expecting from this writing duo. I thought it was a great start to another science fiction series from them. I loved how we get multiple POVs and they were each so different from one another. Also, let’s all give a cheer for the fae-inspired, Kal. Seriously… SPACE ELVES.

What book did you plan on reading but never got around to?

40523458._SY475_

Kingsbane (Empirium, #2) by Claire Legrand

I actually preordered this beauty but then I realized I desperately needed to do a reread of the first book before diving in. I’ve finally gotten around to downloading the audiobook version of it and so hopefully I’ll be able to finish that after my current listen of Iron Gold. So I’m hoping to add this to my TBR for next month. It’s just been begging me to pick it up.

What’s on your Autumn TBR?

What was your favorite summer release? Was there a specific book you meant to read but never got around to it? What books do you plan on reading during this fall?

What are you currently reading?

  • Surprise, Kill, Vanish by Annie Jacobsen – physical book
  • Middlemarch by George Eliot – physical book
  • Heart of Iron (Heart of Iron, #1) by Ashley Poston – physical book
  • Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown – audiobook

I have only read the first chapter so far in Heart of Iron, so I don’t have too much of an opinion yet. However, I’m enjoying the writing style so far and I think this could be an easy to devour story… but we shall see!

I just started Iron Gold as well, so I’m only about 10 mins into that story. I know I’ve mentioned this multiple times so far, but I really have enjoyed my decision to reread this series as an audiobook before diving into the latest release, Dark Age. Pierce Brown is just such an amazing author. I’m actually really excited for when he breaks away from the Red Rising world and into a completely new story.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Morning Star (Red Rising, #3) by Pierce Brown – audiobook, reread
  • The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson – physical book, Book Review

I ended up in love with The Summer Before the War. I really enjoyed the small village setting, the eccentric characters, and the relationships between them all. This has made me want to read anything and everything by Helen Simonson, so I plan to dive into her backlist soon. I really recommend this story to fans of Downton Abbey, so if that’s you then I hope you decide to pick up this book!

Surprisingly enough, I think I enjoyed Morning Star even more this second time around than I did the first time I read it. Before now, I had always said Golden Son was my favorite in the series, but this reread has me debating on changing that original opinion. If you haven’t tried listening to this series as an audiobook, I highly recommend it. The narrator is fantastic!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor, #1) by Jessica Townsend – physical book
  • The Last Magician (The Last Magician, #1) by Lisa Maxwell – physical book
  • The Alice Network by Kate Quinn – audiobook

Book Review: The Summer Before the War

Whenever I read a good historical fiction novel, I feel a strong sense of nostalgia for some reason. Maybe it’s because I read mostly historical fiction when I was a child, or maybe it’s just my strong love of history that draws me completely in. But for whatever reason, I definitely got that feeling while reading Helen Simonson’s, The Summer Before the War.

The bestselling author of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand returns with a breathtaking novel of love and war that reaches far beyond the small English town in which it is set.

East Sussex, 1914. It is the end of England’s brief Edwardian summer, and everyone agrees that the weather has never been so beautiful. Hugh Grange, down from his medical studies, is visiting his Aunt Agatha, who lives with her husband in the small, idyllic coastal town of Rye. Agatha’s husband works in the Foreign Office, and she is certain he will ensure that the recent saber rattling over the Balkans won’t come to anything. And Agatha has more immediate concerns; she has just risked her carefully built reputation by pushing for the appointment of a woman to replace the Latin master.

When Beatrice Nash arrives with one trunk and several large crates of books, it is clear she is significantly more freethinking—and attractive—than anyone believes a Latin teacher should be. For her part, mourning the death of her beloved father, who has left her penniless, Beatrice simply wants to be left alone to pursue her teaching and writing.

But just as Beatrice comes alive to the beauty of the Sussex landscape and the colorful characters who populate Rye, the perfect summer is about to end. For despite Agatha’s reassurances, the unimaginable is coming. Soon the limits of progress, and the old ways, will be tested as this small Sussex town and its inhabitants go to war.

I loved Simonson’s writing style. I think it flowed really well and truly helped bring the village of Rye and its inhabitants to life. It was surprising how her writing style fit in with the time period perfectly. It almost reads like a classic novel actually written during the time period of which it is set in. However, do not let that fool you. It is still a very easy to read book and it does not tend to meander into lengthy irrelevant passages, as classically written novels tend to do. I never found myself struggling to understand the message of the story.

The plot of the story was also very engaging. I loved following the lives of multiple characters and how they were all connected through Rye. This story has a little bit of everything, including romance and family drama. I never found myself bored, but instead I was constantly wanting to pick up the book to see what was going to happen next. I appreciated all of the mix of characters that each brought something unique to the story. Coming from someone who has grown up in a small town, I definitely felt a connection with the all of the drama that ensued in the story.

celebrate allkinds of love.png

Our three main POV characters were all compelling with their own interwoven story lines. Agatha is the more forward-thinking of the group of upper class women in Rye. After convincing the school board to hire Beatrice as the Latin teacher, she takes her under her wing and becomes a motherly figure for the young woman. I really enjoyed Agatha’s character. She toed the line between being a conservative upstanding citizen in the community and the progressive and stubborn woman that she is at home. Beatrice is definitely a progressive woman for the times, as she has grown up living a bohemian and intellectual style with her professor father. She speaks her mind and is willing to put up a fight for the things that she cares for. And then there is Hugh, the solid and reliable aspiring doctor with a big heart. I loved Hugh. He was always so caring and understanding with everyone he comes into contact with. I also really enjoyed his bond with his cousin, Daniel, and how he looks out for him like a big brother would.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was engaging and entertaining, especially when it comes to examining all of the different characters within Rye and their interactions with one another. I think this would be the perfect cozy book to pick up during the upcoming holiday season. If you’re a fan of shows like Downton Abbey or just historical fiction in general, I think you’ll really enjoy this book as well.

Final Verdict: 5/5 Stars

After a slow start to picking up the book, I am finally making some progress in The Summer Before the War. Y’all, I think this may become a new favorite novel. I love the writing style and all of the characters are so interesting. I can’t wait to see how this story will unfold.

I also put aside the podcasts yesterday and finally made some more progress in Morning Star. Things are really about to start getting interesting in that story. I can’t believe how much I’ve actually forgotten in this book.

No further progress in my non-fiction and classic books. I’m hoping to set aside some time this week to read a few chapters in each.

Now that that book is over and done with and September is finally here, the reading gods are smiling down on me. So I can’t shame them now, can I?!

I will finally be starting on The Summer Before the War today and I’m really excited. I love a good historical fiction sprinkled with romance and this one sounds like the perfect book to end summer with. I plan to get back into reading Middlemarch regularly again this week, as well as Surprise, Kill, Vanish. I should finally be finishing up Morning Star in the next couple of days… damn those podcasts.

I finally finished this book. It was a nice bittersweet love story, if a little slow-moving. I think it was only missing a bit more conflict and action.

I’ve finally passed the halfway point on Morning Star, which is pretty exciting since my life has been taken over by podcasts lately… You know, it happens to the best of us.

And no, I haven’t really made any progress in the other novels. My plan is to focus on The Game of Love and Death this weekend and try to finish that one up. I will admit it’s a bit slow-moving and I’m craving a little something more exciting to keep my attention to help pull me from this mini reading slump.

  • The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon – physical book

Y’all, I have very conflicted feelings on this book. I mean, it took me over a month and a half to finish. I was super excited for this book but it just didn’t live up to the hype for me. It took wayyyy too long to get to any serious action and that it was one of my main pet peeves when it comes to novels.

I really planned on finishing Morning Star before today, but it was one of those weeks where I just got sucked into my podcasts over the audiobook. Oops! But I really should finish it by this weekend. I’m ready to relive Darrow kicking Octavia’s ass!

I’ve finally got less than 100 pages left in The Priory of the Orange Tree. It felt like I was really never going to finish this book, didn’t it? I’m so glad things are actually happening and I’m finally fully invested in this story. Needless to say, this book has been a bit of a let down for me.

The Game of Love and Death is a bit of a slow burner so far, but I still love the setting and unique plot of the story. Flora is such an interesting character and I’m rooting for her to get a happy ending.

I’m coming up on the end of Morning Star and it’s crazy how much I had forgot happened. This book is nonstop action and I am so glad I made the choice to go back and do this reread. I also made a bit more progress in The Priory of the Orange Tree. I only have about 200 pages left and let me tell you, it has just now reached a point where I feel truly invested in seeing what is going to happen next.
