WWW Wednesday – April 20th, 2016

Welcome to WWW Wednesday which is currently being hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. It’s really just a place to do little update on what all you’ve been reading lately. Anyone is welcome to join, just leave a link to your post in the comments!

The Three Ws are:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading…

So I made it about 30 pages into Passenger before I realized I wasn’t really feeling it at the moment and chose to pick up Finnikin of the Rock instead. Truth be told, I haven’t really felt like reading at all the past couple of days. I think Genrethon burned me out. However, I do plan to read today so hopefully I stick to that during my free time. I am still enjoying The Reflections of Queen Snow White but I haven’t really picked it up for very long recently. I blame it on Genrethon. Okay, I’m just blaming everything on that now!

Recently Finished…

I finished these beauties during Genrethon and I highly recommend each of them. Dorothy Must Die is twisted and exciting, Ink and Bone is philosophical and intriguing, and Half Bad, well I really enjoyed it but I still haven’t quite figured out why. I’m behind right now on reviews as well (I’ve been in a strange mood recently), but I should get caught up by the end of the week and have Dorothy and Half Bad finished. You can find my review of Ink and Bone HERE.

Want to Read Next…

These are all of the library books I picked up yesterday, so I plan to read those as soon as possible. Then I plan to take cut back a bit at the library and alternate between a library book and a book I own until I finish my currently owned TBR shelf. I mean, that would be the smart thing to do, right? Right?! Don’t worry, it is.

I also just realized that I’m starting a lot of series lately but not finishing them. Might as well add that to my TBR too. Damn, this thing never ends!

Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles, #1) by Melina Marchetta

“Is she friend of foe?” Moss asked. “Because she is a beast at cards, and at times I feel as if the power of the mightiest of gods is in her eyes.”

For those of you who follow me on Goodreads, you will have realized that I actually started Passenger the other night… Well, I switched. I just want some high fantasy right now, you know? I’m being a very naughty Hype or Like Friday group host.

The Reflections of Queen Snow White by David Meredith

She wanted her continued existence to be more than it was just as much today as in her turbulent childhood. It was that same amorphous desire to do something, anything to better her situation that compelled her to gaze yet again into the magical looking glass.

-35% finished

I’ll be honest that when the author contacted me to review his book, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. However, I’m really enjoying this story! It’s such an interesting retelling that shows you what happens to fairytales after the happily ever after. And sometimes, maybe it’s not always that happy.

If you participate in Teaser Tuesday, then please leave a comment with the link to your post. If you don’t, I’d still love to read a tidbit of your current read so feel free to leave it in the comments. What do you think about my teasers this week? Sound interesting? Boring? Dumb?

Ink and Bone (The Great Library, #1) by Rachel Caine

I’m gonna try something new today instead of writing my typical paragraph about what I’m think of the books so far. But I will say this, I’m really enjoying this one!

In an exhilarating new series, New York Times bestselling author Rachel Caine rewrites history, creating a dangerous world where the Great Library of Alexandria has survived the test of time…

Ruthless and supremely powerful, the Great Library is now a presence in every major city, governing the flow of knowledge to the masses. Alchemy allows the Library to deliver the content of the greatest works of history instantly—but the personal ownership of books is expressly forbidden.

Jess Brightwell believes in the value of the Library, but the majority of his knowledge comes from illegal books obtained by his family, who are involved in the thriving black market. Jess has been sent to be his family’s spy, but his loyalties are tested in the final months of his training to enter the Library’s service.

When his friend inadvertently commits heresy by creating a device that could change the world, Jess discovers that those who control the Great Library believe that knowledge is more valuable than any human life—and soon both heretics and books will burn…

Ascension (The Indigo Project) by Christopher De Sousa

I still have no idea what the hell is going on with this book. I feel like there was a prequel or something but no one bothered to tell me.

Katherine Munroe is most definitely not your typical teen and just about the only thing typical are her high school boy problems. She does however have quite the amazing ability to draw and much to her own confusion she accidentally lights things on fire. Even more plaguing are her reoccurring hallucinations, always thinking she is losing it, or so she thought. But then, after a horrific attack on her life resulting in the death of her father, she realizes there is something…more. Anzu, a winged beast of a different sort, and subject of Katherine’s hallucinations, saves her and become’s her guardian.

Bereaved over the loss of her father, she quickly discovers the unthinkable. Her entire township, as she knew, is a secret government experiment. And her father? Well, he was more of a caretaker since her birth. This rogue operation, better known as Project Indigo, is at war with a corrupted race of celestial beings.

In order to save the world and defeat The Corrupted they need the help of Katherine. Through special training and the discovery of her abilities, Katherine and Project Indigo battle the entities set to destroy them while she discovers the truth about her family, her lineage, and her future.

Recently Finished Reading…

This past week was a really good reading week for me. I totally recommend all 3 of these books to everyone. If you’ve had these on your TBR list for a while, bump them to the top. You won’t regret it!

Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman: 5/5 stars,  FULL REVIEW

Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson: 4/5 stars, FULL REVIEW

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz: 5/5 stars, FULL REVIEW

2 library books, 1 author-requested book review, 2 book club BOTMs, and 3 NetGalley Arcs… Yikes. What are the odds that I complete this list by the end of April? Yeah, I don’t think it’s very good either.

Leave me a link to your WWW Wednesday post in the comments or just let me know what your reading schedule is looking like! Have you read any of the books on my list? See any that interest you or are on your TBR?

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

So yeah, I’m embarrassed to admit but I haven’t made any progress this week on this book. I’ve been in a kind of mini-slump and I was out of town yesterday and never had any time to read. I’ll hopefully have this finished by Friday though! Everyone raves about it!

Ascension by Christopher De Sousa

I haven’t started on this book yet so I can’t really say anything about it. It’s gotten mediocre reviews so far on Goodreads so I’m interested in seeing how I feel about it. It may be one of those fantasy/paranormal novels with too many moving parts and plot holes. But we will just have to wait and see!

Recently Finished…

  • Vengeance Road – I absolutely loved this book. It was fun, full of revenge and a badass female MC. I definitely recommend it!! Full review HERE.
  • Nora & Kettle – If you’re friends with me on Goodreads, you’ll know that I had to DNF this book. It was beautifully written but my God, I could not get past the domestic violence. It was against two girls, one who was only 7 years old. It was just too depressing for me and I couldn’t get past it.
  • A Darker Shade of Magic – This was a good fantasy. I enjoyed it but I think it might be a tad overhyped, as it took a while for me to get into it and I didn’t really like Lila as a character. I’m interested in seeing how A Gathering of Shadows builds on this story and if it gets better!

Reading Next…

  • The Reflections of Queen Snow White – This one was sent to me by the author and I’m really interested in reading it! It’s a story about the later life of Snow White and how she handles her daughter marrying and being alone since her husband died. It’s a unique story and sounds really good!
  • Practical Applications for Multiverse Theory – A NetGalley ARC that just sounds like a fun science fiction/fantasy ride. It’s about a boy and girl who’s school begins to change once our dimension starts opening up and blending with all of the other dimensions, and teachers begin to turn into demons and the janitor becomes a sloth wearing a cowboy hat and chaps. Yes, I’m super excited to read this!
  • Ink and Bone – Big thanks to my library for having this one available. I’ve been wanting to read it for a while now and I finally get to. Hopefully it’s as good as I’m hoping, because hello, it’s all about the Alexandria Library! I like to pretend that it never actually burnt down and destroyed so much ancient writing. 😦
  • Walk on Earth a Stranger – I probably shouldn’t jump back into another Western YA after just finishing an amazing one, but hopefully it stands up to the pressure and expectations. We shall see!
  • The Other Side of Gravity – I actually don’t remember what this one is supposed to be about. Hopefully it’s not lame. Luckily, I got it for free from NetGalley so no pressure to enjoy it there!

As always, leave me a link so I can see what you’re reading or just leave it in the comments! Have you read any of the books I’ve got listed? Thoughts on them? It’s all welcome!
