January Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

I’m actually proud of starting off the new reading year fairly strong. My main goal this year was to not let myself get bogged down by trying to cram as many books into it as possible. I want to actually focus on what I really want to read, even if it’s a long book (which were the majority of my reads this month). And if January was any indication, I think I’m doing a pretty good job so far. Isn’t it a nice feeling when you take the pressure off yourself?

What are you currently reading?

  • Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown – audiobook
  • The Lioness of Morocco by Julia Drosten – audiobook
  • The Wicked City by Beatriz Williams – physical book

I am finally making some progress with my audiobooks and hope to actually finish The Lioness of Morocco this week. This has been a really interesting read so far and I’m enjoying it. It’s making me want to pick up more translated works in the future.

I’m about a third of the way through The Wicked City and the plot is starting to pick up. It’s a really interesting concept and I can’t wait to see how the two different timelines come together. I think I’m in for a wild ride, especially in Gin’s POV.

  • The Last Magician (The Last Magician, #1) by Lisa Maxwell – physical book, BOOK REVIEW

I thought this was an entertaining read, though not exactly a perfect book. I do plan to continue with the series to see what will happen to our characters next. I feel like the sequel will be better than this one.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Bear and the Nightingale (Winternight Trilogy, #1) by Katherine Arden – physical book
  • The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad – audiobook
  • City of Lies (Poison Wars, #1) by Sam Hawke – physical book

Book Review: The Last Magician (The Last Magician, #1)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect with Lisa Maxwell’s The Last Magician (The Last Magician, #1)I had heard many good things about the book and the premise sounded very interesting, but I was never fully hyped on reading it. However, I’m glad that I did as it turned out to be an interesting read with quite a cast of characters.

Stop the Magician. Steal the book. Save the future.

In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

Maxwell’s writing style is very straightforward. There’s no use of flowery prose to mask the plot here, which as you all know, I really appreciate. Flowery prose can be very hit or miss and I feel that it would have done a disservice to this book. This story is very plot driven with a lot of bouncing around between characters. I will say that it took some time for it to really build up, as the first quarter of the book is just a build up for all of the characters. It does start off a little slow and took me a while to really get into the story.

We really have two main characters with one being Esta, a time traveling thief with a no-nonsense attitude and doesn’t appreciate being told what to do. She is very stubborn and will do just about anything to complete her mission. Then there is Darrington, a talented Mageus with a troubled past that he’s trying to run from. His relationship with Esta is full of tension from the very moment they first meet, sexually and personality-wise. I loved watching them struggle to take control of each other. They’re both super stubborn and working towards their own personal goals, so it was always fun when they would butt heads. There was also a really large cast of supporting characters, each with their own personality and backstory that was really fleshed out so you could see why they would make the choices that they did.

Saying and doing things over and over and over makes them safe. at least it used to. i'm not so sure anymore.Don't tell.don't tell.don't tell.no, it doesn't feel safe at all..png

I would say that my biggest issues with this book was the slow beginning and the complicated world-building. I very rarely struggle to understand the world in which a book is set in, but it took me the majority of this book to really understand the history of Mageus and their struggle against the Order. I feel like there was a lack of explanation that would’ve been very helpful early on in the story, even a little prologue with a history lesson. Instead, we are immediately thrown into this world knowing there’s a struggle between the two, but no real reason as to why. It seemed like we were not really given this backstory until late in the book. I think Maxwell missed an opportunity to really flesh out the setting, focusing on the city itself and not the background.

Overall this was an enjoyable book and I do plan to continue with the series, as I really want to see how Esta’s story ends after that cliffhanger ending. While there were some flaws to the story, it was still entertaining. If you enjoy fantasy and historical fiction, I think this book will interest you as it does weave the two together really well.

Final Verdict: 3/5 Stars

Have you read The Last Magician? Did you struggle to understand the history between the Order and the Mageus? Did you enjoy the book? Have you read the sequel?

  • Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown – audiobook
  • The Lioness of Morocco by Julia Drosten – audiobook
  • Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor, #2) by Jessica Townsend  – physical book

I have finally made some more progress in Iron Gold over the past week and I’m ready to really focus on it. It’s such a good book and I can’t wait to relive all of the action before diving into Dark Age. I have also just started listening to The Lioness of Morocco. I haven’t read a translated novel in a long time so I’m glad to dive into this one. And yes, if you’re wondering… I did decide to DNF Romanov. I was positively bored and could no longer force myself to care to listen to it.

I only have about 100 pages left in Wundersmith and of course, I am positively obsessed with it. This series has quickly grown to be an all-time favorite of mine and I would literally throw it at every single person I meet to make them read it. It deserves to be praised and adored. I would love an adaptation, as well. It would be so fun and quirky for everyone to enjoy.

  • Supernova (Renegades, #3) by Marissa Meyer  – physical book

This was such an awesome finale to the trilogy. I really enjoyed how Meyer decided to end the story. It was such a thrill ride from start to finish, leaving me on edge while I was reading it. I could feel myself tensing up because I was so nervous for all of the characters. It was just so much fun!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Last Magician (The Last Magician, #1) by Lisa Maxwell – physical book
  • Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl- physical book

  • Romanov by Nadine Brandes – audiobook, buddy read
  • Supernova (Renegades, #3) by Marissa Meyer  – physical book

No progress really in my audiobooks. I tried to listen to Iron Gold on the plane on my way to Charleston, but I had such a terrible headache at the time that I couldn’t focus. I hope to listen some more though this week.

I’m almost halfway through Supernova and loving it so far. I really enjoy how things really amped up in this finale with everyone’s plans slowly unraveling. I cannot wait to see what is going to happen next to our superheroes. If this ending wrecks me, I may never be able to recover… #ProtectMax

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Somerset by Leila Meacham  – physical book
  • The Queen of Nothing (The Folk of the Air, #3) by Holly Black – physical book

Can I just say that I absolutely adored both of these books? Because I did. Somerset left me in tears at the end, which is exactly what I was hoping for. It really made me want to reread Roses, which I may do in the near future. And The Queen of Nothing was such a a good ending to the trilogy. It really left me wanting more and it’ll be interesting to see if Black continues to write novels set in the same universe as this one and her other books. I think it’s great how she’s been doing that and still connecting them all in little ways. I just want more!

  • Somerset by Leila Meacham  – physical book

I’ve made very little progress with my audiobooks this week, as work has been super crazy busy. However, I am flying out to Charleston tomorrow to visit a friend for the weekend, so hopefully I’ll be able to do some listening during the flights. I’m so close to finishing Romanov and I can’t wait to put this boring book behind me for good. Then I’ll really be able to put my focus on Iron Gold.

I’m about halfway through Somerset and absolutely loving it so far. It’s been a few years since I first read Roses, and I’m really enjoying diving back into the family sagas of the Tollivers and Warwicks. However, I’m reaching the period when the Civil War breaks out and I’m already expecting my heart to do some breaking. I definitely better keep some tissues nearby for when the tears begin to fall. If you enjoy wonderful historical fiction novels, I highly suggest picking up Leila Meacham’s books.

  • The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw – physical book

I really enjoyed this story, but mostly because Ernshaw is such an incredible writer. I still can’t believe this was a debut novel, as it certainly doesn’t read that way. I’m even more excited to pick up her latest book because I can only imagine it being even better than this one.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I’ve finally crossed over the halfway point in Romanov. Unfortunately, the plot is still very slow and I find myself not really feeling engage enough to want to listen to it. I’ll finish it eventually but I’m not sure it will still be by the end of this week.

I’m about halfway through The Wicked Deep and I’m really enjoying it so far. There were a few interesting reveals that have piqued my interest especially, so I’m excited to see how that will affect the story moving forward. I’m hoping the pace will pick up soon because of it.

My November TBR

I know I’m a little late this month getting around to posting my TBR, but work has been insane lately and I just haven’t had the time until the past couple of days to get back to all of you beautiful friends. I do think I plan to be doing a person read-a-thon this weekend but I’m not committing fully to it yet until closer. You just never know what’s going to come up, you know? Like tonight, I don’t plan on getting much reading done because… IT’S TIME FOR THE MANDALORIAN!!!! That’s right, my Star Wars obsessed butt is going to be glued to the television after work. No one bother me, k thanks. 😉

Anyways, I’m pretty far behind on my Goodreads Challenge and so I’m going to aim pretty high for the remainder of the year. Luckily, I have plenty of vacation time coming up to really focus on my reading. Let’s just hope I don’t dive into a reading slump any time soon.

November TBR

  • Somerset by Leila Meacham – physical book
  • The Last Magician (The Last Magician, #1) by Lisa Maxwell – physical book
  • The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking Trilogy, #1) by Patrick Ness – physical book
  • Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl – physical book
  • The Poppy War (The Poppy War, #1) by R.F. Kuang – physical book
  • Valiant (A Modern Faerie Tale, #2) by Holly Black – physical book
  • City of Lies (Poison Wars, #1) by Sam Hawke – physical book
  • The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad – audiobook

What do you plan on reading in November? Is there a specific genre that you like reading during the holiday season? Have you read any of the books on my TBR?

I’ve made a bit more progress in Romanov this week, but I am STILL waiting for anything to happen. To say this book is slow with no clear plot at this point is probably an understatement.

I am about halfway through Songs from the Deep, which I am currently reviewing as part of the blog tour through Scholastic Publishing. Y’all, I am loving this story so far. It’s very atmospheric with plenty of secrets running about that keeps you guessing. I can’t wait to see how it ends!

  • Devils & Thieves (Devils & Thieves, #1) by Jennifer Rush – physical book

This book was interesting and I really enjoyed the premise magical biker gangs. I wouldn’t say this was the most groundbreaking read in any way, but I was still entertained by the story. I haven’t heard anything about the sequel which is a shame because I feel like where the story was heading could be a really good change of pace.

What are you currently reading?

  • Middlemarch by George Eliot – physical book
  • Heart of Iron (Heart of Iron, #1) by Ashley Poston – physical book
  • Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown – audiobook

I have only read the first chapter so far in Heart of Iron, so I don’t have too much of an opinion yet. However, I’m enjoying the writing style so far and I think this could be an easy to devour story… but we shall see!

I just started Iron Gold as well, so I’m only about 10 mins into that story. I know I’ve mentioned this multiple times so far, but I really have enjoyed my decision to reread this series as an audiobook before diving into the latest release, Dark Age. Pierce Brown is just such an amazing author. I’m actually really excited for when he breaks away from the Red Rising world and into a completely new story.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Morning Star (Red Rising, #3) by Pierce Brown – audiobook, reread
  • The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson – physical book, Book Review

I ended up in love with The Summer Before the War. I really enjoyed the small village setting, the eccentric characters, and the relationships between them all. This has made me want to read anything and everything by Helen Simonson, so I plan to dive into her backlist soon. I really recommend this story to fans of Downton Abbey, so if that’s you then I hope you decide to pick up this book!

Surprisingly enough, I think I enjoyed Morning Star even more this second time around than I did the first time I read it. Before now, I had always said Golden Son was my favorite in the series, but this reread has me debating on changing that original opinion. If you haven’t tried listening to this series as an audiobook, I highly recommend it. The narrator is fantastic!

What do you think you’ll read next?
