2019 End of Year Survey

2019 was a solid reading year for myself, if not as great as I was hoping it would be. However, I did get to read some amazing books and find new favorite authors so I can’t complain too much. I can’t wait to look back on everything that I’ve read over the past year!

If you wish to participate in the survey, please link back to the original creator – Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner.

February Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

Woohoo, I had a great reading month in February! I’m super back into the reading groove and I even notice that affecting me in general. I’m back into watching Booktube, I browse Goodreads pretty much every day, and I’ve even started listening to podcasts about books. So yeah, I’m feeling really good right now. I also got back into working out at the gym and I can feel such a difference in how I feel physically, especially in regards to my sleeping habits. So yeah, if you’re having trouble falling asleep or sleeping straight through the night on a regular basis, I totally recommend doing some sort of physical workout or even yoga at night before going to bed… And that is my tip for the day! Haha!

Did you get a lot of reading done in February? Were you able to read all of the books on your TBR? Did you read any new favorites? What book did you like the least? What do you plan on reading in March?

Book Review: The Kingdom of Copper (The Daevabad Trilogy, #2)

I cannot truly convey how excited I was to pick up The Kingdom of Copper (The Daevabad Trilogy, #2) by S.A. Chakraborty. I absolutely adored the first novel and have been dying for this release ever since I finished it.

S. A. Chakraborty continues the sweeping adventure begun in The City of Brassconjuring a world where djinn summon flames with the snap of a finger and waters run deep with old magic; where blood can be dangerous as any spell, and a clever con artist from Cairo will alter the fate of a kingdom.

Nahri’s life changed forever the moment she accidentally summoned Dara, a formidable, mysterious djinn, during one of her schemes. Whisked from her home in Cairo, she was thrust into the dazzling royal court of Daevabad—and quickly discovered she would need all her grifter instincts to survive there.

Now, with Daevabad entrenched in the dark aftermath of a devastating battle, Nahri must forge a new path for herself. But even as she embraces her heritage and the power it holds, she knows she’s been trapped in a gilded cage, watched by a king who rules from the throne that once belonged to her family—and one misstep will doom her tribe..

Meanwhile, Ali has been exiled for daring to defy his father. Hunted by assassins, adrift on the unforgiving copper sands of his ancestral land, he is forced to rely on the frightening abilities the marid—the unpredictable water spirits—have gifted him. But in doing so, he threatens to unearth a terrible secret his family has long kept buried.

And as a new century approaches and the djinn gather within Daevabad’s towering brass walls for celebrations, a threat brews unseen in the desolate north. It’s a force that would bring a storm of fire straight to the city’s gates . . . and one that seeks the aid of a warrior trapped between worlds, torn between a violent duty he can never escape and a peace he fears he will never deserve.

Building off the incredible world-building in book one, Chakraborty continues to expand upon this fantastical world. We get a little bit more background information on both the back-and-forth fighting between Daeva and djinn, as well as getting to know more about the marid and ifrit. I think it helped clarify some lingering questions I had in the first book, as well as refresh my memory (since of course I forgot a lot of stuff since reading the first book last year upon its release). Minor Spoiler (but not really!)… I thought it was an interesting choice to jump 5 years into the future in this book. That might be my one criticism, as it seemed that some of the characters went through some development during that time but we didn’t get to experience that growth with them. This caused a little bit of disconnect between me and them, especially Nahri, whom I adored in the first novel.

Speaking of Nahri… I felt like she went through the most change during that 5 year interval and perhaps not in the best way. In the first book we saw her struggling to fit in among her own people, as well as struggling with their traditions and faith. However, now she’s completely found her stride and even calling them “her tribe”. It was something I wish we hadn’t gotten experience that relationship building along with her, rather than just basically being told it happened. Other than that, Nahri was the same personality-wise. She’s still fierce and always willing to fight for what she wants, especially if it means doing the opposite of what the Qhatani want. I think Ali probably changed the least overall. He’s still rigid on his sense of right and wrong, which continues to get him into trouble with his family. However, I find myself pretty much always agreeing with him. He reminds me of me, in that we probably don’t always think of the best course of action and instead just react immediately. And then there’s my poor Dara.. He’s still living with a lifetime of regret and is once again being thrust into a position that he doesn’t agree with. Honestly, I just want everyone to leave him alone and let him go live happily ever after. He’s always getting the shit end of the stick and I hate that!

I loved that this book had even more political intrigue than the first one. I always appreciate how much thought and planning goes into political scenes in novels. There are always so many twists and turns that I never see coming. With that being said, if you aren’t the biggest fan of political intrigue and prefer more of action-based story, then you might not enjoy this book as much. Real action is used sparingly throughout and really only plays a huge factor in the climax. But for me, give me all of the political power plays! I will never say no to that kind of tension in a story. I feel it always adds an extra level of suspense that can really elevate the reading experience.

Overall, this book was a fantastic sequel to The City of Brass. I loved how Chakraborty expanded even more on the conflicts between the tribes, as well as the marid and ifrit. I also felt that the tension was amped up even more in this book. I think that was a great way to prepare the readers for what will come next in the finale. I was a little surprised by Nahri’s character development, but it didn’t really affect my overall enjoyment of the story. I just know that I cannot wait to see how it will all end! (Hopefully, with a nice relaxing retirement for Dara.)

Final Verdict: 5/5 Stars

Have you read The Kingdom of Brass? What did you think with the five year leap? Do you think that it negatively affected Nahri as a character?

What are you currently reading?

  • A Curse So Dark and Lonely (A Curse So Dark and Lonely, #1) by Brigid Kemmerer – physical book
  • Reign of Mist (The Oremere Chronicles, #2) by Helen Scheuerer – audiobook

Well I can already tell you that I’m obsessed with A Curse So Dark and Lonely. I’m always a sucker for a good fairytale retelling and this one especially has me hooked. I’m also still enjoying Reign of Mist and should be finishing it up today or tomorrow. This story gets more and more complex and I really like that. I would definitely consider this more of an adult fantasy at this point.

  • The Kingdom of Copper (The Daevabad Trilogy, #2) by S.A. Chakraborty – physical book, review scheduled for tomorrow

Yes, I absolutely am in love with this book. It was just as amazing as The City of Brass, with even more political intrigue and tension than the first book. I am already dying for the final book to get in my hands. MY HEART CANNOT TAKE THE WAITING!!!!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Bloodwitch (The Witchlands, #3) by Susan Dennard – physical book
  • Immortal Reign (Falling Kingdoms, #6) by Morgan Rhodes – physical book
  • Pride by Ibi Zoboi – physical ARC

My copy of Bloodwitch arrived yesterday and I am soooo ready to dive into it. I’ve been waiting for two damn years for this book, haha! Then I plan to finish up the Falling Kingdoms series and move on to Pride.

My February TBR

Yes, I’m aware that we’re already a week into February and I don’t care. It’s been so long since I’ve planned out a monthly TBR that I just really got the itch to try and do that this month. I’ve been having trouble deciding what books to read next lately and I think this will help me not have to agonize over my bookshelves on what to grab. Does anyone else ever hate that feeling where you know you really want to read but can’t decide on what? Yeah, me too.

My TBR

  • Reign of Mist (The Oremere Chronicles, #2) by Helen Scheuerer – audiobook, currently reading
  • The Kingdom of Copper (The Daevabad Trilogy, #2) by S.A. Chakraborty – physical book, currently reading
  • Immortal Reign (Falling Kingdoms, #6) by Morgan Rhodes – physical book
  • Whiskey When We’re Dry by John Larison – audiobook
  • A Curse So Dark and Lonely (A Curse So Dark and Lonely, #1) by Brigid Kemmerer – physical book
  • Rabbit & Robot by Andrew Smith – physical ARC
  • Pride by Ibi Zoboi – physical ARC
  • Bloodwitch (The Witchlands, #3) by Susan Dennard – physical book
  • Tithe (Modern Faerie Tales, #1) by Holly Black – physical book

As you can see, I’m still trying to get through some of my BookCon 2018 ARCs. I’m actually really excited about these two especially. I love a good retelling and I’m always down for any sort of outer space adventure. I’ve also had Tithe on my bookshelf for a long time and it’s way past time to finally picking it up. Plus, Holly Black and faeries go together like peanut butter and jelly. And I have been waiting for Bloodwitch to get released for two years and it’s finally here! I’ve got that one preordered and can’t wait for it to arrive.

What books do you plan on reading this month? Are you really good about reading your ARCs on time? Have you been waiting for Bloodwitch for as long as I have? Have you read any of the books on my list?

The Three W’s are:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

  • Reign of Mist (The Oremere Chronicles, #2) by Helen Scheuerer – audiobook
  • The Kingdom of Copper (The Daevabad Trilogy, #2) by S.A. Chakraborty – physical book

I’m not very far into Reign of Mist but I’m really enjoying it so far. This series is sooo good and I can’t believe I’ve never heard anyone talking about it. It’s fairly gritty and I’d rather classify it as adult fantasy along the lines of The Queen of Tearling, even though it’s being labeled as YA.

I’m not as far into The Kingdom of Copper as I was hoping I’d be by now, but I’ve just been so tired lately that every time I pick it up, I start dozing off. And no, it’s not because the story is boring either. I really hope I can truly dive into this one tonight. I cannot wait to find out what’s going to happen to all of my sweet babies!

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Hear of Mist (The Oremere Chronicles, #1) by Helen Scheuerer – audiobook
  • Archenemies (Renegades, #2) by Marissa Meyer – physical book
  • Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte – physical ARC

I absolutely loved Heart of Mist (which is probably obvious since I’m already moving on to the sequel). I love the epic scope of the plot and really like all of the characters. Four Dead Queens was not my favorite read. It was a really forgettable novel and I was super disappointed that all of the interesting pieces couldn’t come together to save the overall story. And I just knew that I was going to love it, too… Archenemies was a pretty good follow-up to Renegades. I was a little sad that we didn’t get to experience more of the Anarchists though this time around, as they were kind of stuck farther in the background. But I’m super excited to see how it’ll all come to a head in the finale!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Pride by Ibi Zoboi – physical ARC
  • Immortal Reign (Falling Kingdoms, #6) by Morgan Rhodes – physical book
  • A Curse So Dark and Lonely (A Curse So Dark and Lonely, #1) by Brigid Kemmerer – physical book

Keeping up finishing up my BookCon 2018 ARCs with Pride. I’m always a sucker for a retelling and I think it’s the perfect time to pick this one up since it’s Black History Month. I still feel shame for having put it off for so long. I also need to finish up the Falling Kingdoms series and see how it all ends. And I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally picking up A Curse So Dark and Lonely after reading a sampler of it at BookCon last year. GIMME, GIMME, GIMME!

  • What did you recently finish reading?

What are you currently reading?

  • Heart of Mist (The Oremere Chronicles, #1) by Helen Scheuerer – audiobook
  • Archenemies (Renegades, #2) by Marissa Meyer – physical book

Well I’m only about a third of the way through Heart of Mist, but I am LOVING it. The world is so interesting and I love how engrossing each of the POVs are. I’m also really enjoying Bleak as a main character. I cannot wait to continue on with this story to find out what will happen next. If you like a complex fantasy story with a lot of POVs, I definitely recommend picking this one up.

I’m not very far into Archenemies but I’m enjoying getting back into this world. I’m really interested in seeing where Meyer plans on going with this story, as I have a feeling it’s going to get dark pretty fast… And. I. Here. For. It.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • The Brilliant Death by Amy Rose Capetta – physical ARC, review to come
  • Empire of Sand (The Books of Ambha, #1) by Tasha Suri – physical ARC, REVIEW
  • The Disasters by M.K. England – audiobook
  • Two Dark Reigns (Three Dark Crowns, #3) by Kendare Blake – physical book

The Brilliant Death started off a little rocky for me. The writing wasn’t all that good starting off. However, it did seem to get a lot better as the story moved along. I will say that this is more of an Italy-inspired fantasy story, with little in the way of true mafia inspiration (just your usual marketing ploy failure!!!). But I enjoyed the political plot and exploration of gender-fluidity.

My feelings on Empire of Sand was that it was really hit or miss in areas. The world-building was amazing and overall plot was interesting, but the characters were a bit flat and lacked any personality. I also felt like the pacing was very off, especially in the middle part where the action was REALLY lacking.

While The Disasters plot was engaging and fast-paced, I felt all of the character relationships were pretty surface level and lacked any real depth. I would’ve liked to see more personal interactions between them. The ending also felt a bit rushed, but I think that’s because the author was trying to cram too much into a standalone novel. Had she added another 100 pages or so, the rushed ending and lack of character depth could have been addressed.

I’m obviously trash for the Three Dark Crowns series, so all I can say is that I loved this latest release. It was engaging, dramatic, and just as dark as the previous books. I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Kingdon of Copper (The Daevabad Trilogy, #2) by S.A. Chakraborty – physical book
  • Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte – physical ARC
  • Pride by Ibi Zoboi – physical ARC

My copy of The Kingdom of Copper arrived yesterday and I know I can’t put off picking up this amazing novel for too long. I also plan to continue on completing my collection of BookCon ARCs that I still haven’t picked up yet. I really need to not put off BookCon 2019’s pick ups this year. I swear to read them all before their due dates! Definitely adding that to my 2019 reading goals, ha!

My 2019 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge TBR

For the past couple of years I have participated in the annual POPSUGAR reading challenge… and with abysmal results. However, it’s a new year (unfortunately, same me) and I’m really going to try and actually complete it this year. It’s always a long shot for me as some of the prompts don’t really excite me for one reason or another (like I really don’t appreciate poetry.. oops?). But I’m going to do my best to finish this really intense reading challenge this year. It’s going to be a uphill battle, but I’m willing to make the trek! And for me, the best way to do so is to plan ahead with a TBR. I’ve actually come up with a couple of options for some of the prompts to help with my indecisive reading habits.

If you would like to learn more about this reading challenge, please visit the official Goodreads reading group. They have tons of participants and also discussions on books that would work for each prompt. It’s quite possibly the best group on Goodreads that I’ve ever come across. NO LIE.

Three Bookish Things Tag

I saw that Kristin @ Kristin Kraves Books did this tag a few days ago and I was immediately like, now this’ll be fun! I haven’t done a tag in a while and loved getting to prepare answers for this one. I officially tag whoever else wants to do it! Let’s spread the tag love, y’all! 😉

THREE READ ONCE AND LOVED AUTHORS…

  • Claire Legrand – Furyborn was my first introduction to Legrand’s writing but I was immediately hooked. That book just hit all of the buttons for what I consider makes an amazing fantasy story. I can’t believe I have’t read any of her other books before but I definitely plan to pick them up in the future. Ohhhhh, yes!
  • Jennifer Donnelly – I think y’all already know how much I enjoy a good historical fiction novel and Donnelly delivered with These Shallow Graves. It was the perfect mix history, mystery, and a dash of romance. I needsssss more books like this one!
  • S.A. Chakraborty – Bow down to this queen! Her debut novel The City of Brass is my favorite of 2018 so far and I literally think about it at least a week. The wait for the sequel is breaking my heart.. January just seems sooooo far away and it’s not okay! Also, if she wants to toss out a new book every single year for the rest of her life, that’d be super cool with me.

THREE TITLES I’VE WATCHED BUT HAVEN’T READ…

Yes, I have seen all three of the adaptations of these novels but haven’t read the books yet. And if you’re thinking, Larkin you should be ashamed of youself.. Don’t worry because I’m way ahead of you on that front. I obviously plan on picking up Crazy Rich Asians and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before soon. Those adaptations got me hooked! As for The Alienist, I think I’ll just stick with the miniseries.

THREE CHARACTERS YOU LOVE…

  • Victra from Red Rising Series by Pierce Brown – Victra is my main bitch. She’s snarky, independent, a bit crazy, and just cool as hell. I love that she’s not afraid to do what needs to be done, even though it might be a bit drastic at times. I will continue to root for her until the end of time. You go, girl!
  • Nina from Six of Crows Duology by Leigh Bardugo – Nina is like my twin. We both love to tease people, we can never get enough of sweets, and we’ve got some curves. I also just love how kind she is. Basically, we would be best friends in real life. YOU DESERVE TO LOVE AGAIN, NINA!!!
  • Hermione Granger from Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling – Because, obviously… Side note – I retyped her name 10 times because it didn’t look right. I might’ve had to Google it to make sure I wasn’t going insane.

THREE SERIES YOU BINGED…

  • The Queen of the Tearling Trilogy by Erika Johansen – This is one of my favorite fantasy series ever. It’s very complex with so many different layers to the story, and only gets deeper and deeper with each book. It’s also nice to have an adult fantasy that revolves around a female MC, especially one as awesome as Kelsea… Also, if you’re not convinced enough to read this one, just know that Emma Watson is trying to get this adapted for the big screen and will be producing it. You know, just FYI. 😉
  • The Bone Season Series by Samantha Shannon – This one probably shouldn’t count since only 3 of the planned 7 books have been released, but I binged all 3 in two days last summer so I’m counting it. This series is just freaking amazing and I hate how long it takes between each release, but I will follow it through to the end. Shannon just gets me and will forever be an auto-buy author for me. I can’t recommend this series enough. Bonus points for this one currently being optioned for television!
  • The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo – While this one didn’t end the way I was hoping for, I still really enjoyed the ride. The Darkling will forever be my one of my favorite villains in literature. Honestly, he deserved so much more! Also, Mal is the absolute worstttttttttttttt and I will stick by that until the end of time. Ugh, I just hate him. #stillsalty

THREE UNPOPULAR BOOKISH OPINIONS…

  • Mal Sucks – Please see above.
  • Keira Cass = Crap – Sorry, but I just cannot with her books. When I first read The Selection, I didn’t think it sucked too much but it definitely wasn’t this amazing series that everyone said it was. But now when I think about it, I have no idea how I even finished that series. You think there is really this huge revolution/rebellion conflict going on but it ends up being nothing but a sidenote to this stupid love triangle. And the writing overall is really less than mediocre. It’s gonna be a no from me, Dog.
  • No More Ebook ARCs – I have completely stopped using sites like NetGalley and Edelweiss, because I just do not enjoy reading eBooks. And honestly, I’m over requesting ARCs in general, I think. I don’t like being pressured to read a book in a certain amount of time, as I’m completely a mood reader which makes deadlines really hard for me. More power to those of you who can do it with no problem, I wish I had that kind of willpower!!

THREE CURRENT FAVORITE BOOK COVERS…

  • Warrior of the Wild by Tricia Levenseller
  • The Kingdom of Copper (The Daevabad Trilogy, #2) by S.A. Chakraborty
  • The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

Let’s give a shout out for 2019 releases because they are just killing it with these covers, ya’ll!

THREE BOOKISH GOALS FOR THE YEAR…

  • Read at least one Book of the Month book from my TBR each month.
  • Continue to read more diverse books.
  • Complete as many series as possible.

What are three of your bookish goals for the year? What movie adaptations have you seen but haven’t read the book? What are some of your unpopular bookish opinions?
