September Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

Y’all, I am happy to announce that I was finally able to bust through my reading slump in September! I’m so glad I was able to pick up some books that were able to pull me out of my slump and get back to truly enjoying reading. I may not be hitting double digits quite yet, but I’m still proud of the progress that I’m making. If you’re like me and struggle with reading slumps from time to time, I recommend a good binge of a sitcom or newly released show (my current go-to’s are The Mindy Project, New Girl, and The Boys). I also recommend trying a book outside of your normal genre! But with that being said, I see myself finishing out the rest of year really strong and am excited for the books I have on my October TBR!

Did you get a lot of reading done in September? Were you able to read all of the books on your TBR? Did you read any new favorites? What book did you like the least? What do you plan on reading in October?

Book Review: The Game of Love and Death

I was surprised by the lyrical writing in The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough. It really heightened the fantasy and romance in this historical fiction novel.

Antony and Cleopatra. Helen of Troy and Paris. Romeo and Juliet. And now . . . Henry and Flora.

For centuries Love and Death have chosen their players. They have set the rules, rolled the dice, and kept close, ready to influence, angling for supremacy. And Death has always won. Always.

Could there ever be one time, one place, one pair whose love would truly tip the balance?

Meet Flora Saudade, an African-American girl who dreams of becoming the next Amelia Earhart by day and sings in the smoky jazz clubs of Seattle by night. Meet Henry Bishop, born a few blocks and a million worlds away, a white boy with his future assured — a wealthy adoptive family in the midst of the Great Depression, a college scholarship, and all the opportunities in the world seemingly available to him.

The players have been chosen. The dice have been rolled. But when human beings make moves of their own, what happens next is anyone’s guess.

As I mentioned above, the best part of this book to me is the writing. Brockenbrough did a great job writing this story in a lyrical style, that I think worked so well as it was mixing the historical fiction romance with the whimsy of Death and Love being personified. There was also a lot more introspection done in this story that I wasn’t really expecting when I first picked it up. I originally pictured this as a straight romance, with a very plot-centered story. However, this is actually a character focused story, with an emphasis on the philosophical effects of the Game. I was pretty surprised by how deep this story got in places, especially during the Love/Death POV chapters.

Our first main character Flora was really interesting. I loved how her dream and passion was flying, which isn’t something you ever really come across in books. I liked how flying was her passion, but she was such an amazing performer that the two hobbies conflicted with one another. It’s so realistic to have people push things something that you just happen to be good at it, while not understanding that you love something else more. I really appreciated that perspective. Then we have sweet Henry, who is in love with music. His one true passion is playing the bass and luckily, he is one of those people whose passion is also his talent. I personally enjoyed Henry’s character more than Flora’s, as he was more open and I liked that he was the one willing to fight for their love. There was no going back and forth on his feelings, he knew what he wanted right from the start. Love and Death were also really interesting characters. They seemed so believable in that their immortal lives actually weighed upon them. You could readily believe that they had lived and seen far too much.

You were the sun, and i was crashing into you. I'd wake up every morning and think, _This will end in flames_..png

I think my biggest issue with the book was the lack of overall conflict. I’ll admit that the setting and synopsis had me imagining a lot more issues arising from the racial and economic issues of the Great Depression Era, and while these were touched on in certain places, it didn’t seem to have as big of an effect as I thought it would. And between this and the lyrical/introspective writing style, the pacing of the story was rather slow. I struggled with making myself actually take the time to sit down and read it, which is my biggest issue when it comes to books.

I really wanted to enjoy this book more but I need faster pacing or more engrossing storylines to keep me invested. Everything else was really well done, I just had a hard time connecting to the book. I liked the characters and thought there was some really interesting quotes sprinkled throughout, but there was just something missing in the plot. However, I do think that this could be a favorite for a lot of readers, it just missed the mark for me personally.

Final Verdict: 3/5

Have you read The Game of Love and Death? If so, what did you think about it? Do you struggle with character-focused novels?

  • Middlemarch by George Eliot – physical book
  • The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson- physical book

I will finally be starting on The Summer Before the War today and I’m really excited. I love a good historical fiction sprinkled with romance and this one sounds like the perfect book to end summer with. I plan to get back into reading Middlemarch regularly again this week, as well as Surprise, Kill, Vanish. I should finally be finishing up Morning Star in the next couple of days… damn those podcasts.

  • The Game of Love and Death by Marth Brockenbrough – physical book

I finally finished this book. It was a nice bittersweet love story, if a little slow-moving. I think it was only missing a bit more conflict and action.

I’ve finally passed the halfway point on Morning Star, which is pretty exciting since my life has been taken over by podcasts lately… You know, it happens to the best of us.

And no, I haven’t really made any progress in the other novels. My plan is to focus on The Game of Love and Death this weekend and try to finish that one up. I will admit it’s a bit slow-moving and I’m craving a little something more exciting to keep my attention to help pull me from this mini reading slump.

  • The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon – physical book

Y’all, I have very conflicted feelings on this book. I mean, it took me over a month and a half to finish. I was super excited for this book but it just didn’t live up to the hype for me. It took wayyyy too long to get to any serious action and that it was one of my main pet peeves when it comes to novels.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I really planned on finishing Morning Star before today, but it was one of those weeks where I just got sucked into my podcasts over the audiobook. Oops! But I really should finish it by this weekend. I’m ready to relive Darrow kicking Octavia’s ass!

I’ve finally got less than 100 pages left in The Priory of the Orange Tree. It felt like I was really never going to finish this book, didn’t it? I’m so glad things are actually happening and I’m finally fully invested in this story. Needless to say, this book has been a bit of a let down for me.

The Game of Love and Death is a bit of a slow burner so far, but I still love the setting and unique plot of the story. Flora is such an interesting character and I’m rooting for her to get a happy ending.

I’m coming up on the end of Morning Star and it’s crazy how much I had forgot happened. This book is nonstop action and I am so glad I made the choice to go back and do this reread. I also made a bit more progress in The Priory of the Orange Tree. I only have about 200 pages left and let me tell you, it has just now reached a point where I feel truly invested in seeing what is going to happen next.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the mix of characters and how they each had a fairly distinctive personality that shown through during their individual chapters. Also, Zila is low-key amazing… even if she is a sociopath.

My May TBR

Another month, another TBR list that I would really like to complete but then again I also know deep down that I probably won’t. But hey, I like to challenge myself each month and then I can get a little pat on the back when I actually get through them all. It’s the little things in life…

May TBR

  • Middlemarch by George Eliot – physical book
  • The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough – physical book
  • The Mysterious Benedict Society (The Mysterious Benedict Society, #1) by Trenton Lee Stewart – physical book
  • Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel by James Luceno – physical book
  • The Paragon Hotel by Lyndsay Faye – audiobook, currently reading
  • The Gallery by Laura Marx-Fitzgerald – physical book
  • Winterspell (Winterspell, #1) by Claire Legrand – physical book
  • Lifel1k3 (Lifelike, #1) by Jay Kristoff – physical book, currently reading
  • Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1) by Robin LaFevers – audiobook
  • Freeks by Amanda Hocking – physical book
  • Devils & Thieves (Devils & Thieves, #1) by Jennifer Rush – physical book
  • Antigoddess (Goddess War, #1) by Kendare Blake – physical book
  • Circle of Stones by Catherine Fisher – physical book
  • Firstlife (Everlife, #1) by Gina Showalter – physical book

I feel like I picked a good mix of books here. I tried to mostly focus on the books that have been siting on my shelves for multiple years. Here’s to hoping that I can finally check these ones off the list!

What do you plan to read during May? Do you have a set TBR or are you a mood reader? Have you read any of the books on my list? If so, what did you think about them?

My April TBR

I didn’t get to all of the books I wanted to read in March, so there will be a bit of an overflow into this month’s TBR. But I think that’s alright, because I really want to get to these books soon rather than continue to push them aside until later. So yes, my TBR this month is once again a bit ambitious but I’m alright with it. Let’s kick some reading ass in April!

My TBR

  • Rabbit & Robot by Andrew Smith – physical ARC
  • Jade City (The Green Bone Saga, #1) by Fonda Lee – physical book
  • Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix (Rise of the Empress, #2) by Julie C. Dao – audiobook, currently listening
  • The Mirk and Midnight Hour by Jane Nickerson – physical book
  • The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough – physical book
  • Navigating the Stars (Sentinels of the Galaxy, #1) by Maria V. Snyder – audiobook
  • And I Darken (The Conqueror’s Saga, #1) by Kiersten White – physical book, currently buddy reading
  • Tithe (Modern Faerie Tales, #1) by Holly Black – physical book
  • Lifel1k3 (Lifelike, #1) by Jay Kristoff
  • The English Wife by Lauren Willig – physical book, currently reading
  • Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1) by Neal Shusterman – physical book, buddy read
  • The Lying Woods by Ashley Elston – audiobook

This may look like a really extensive TBR, but with 3 of these being audiobooks which I can speed through pretty quickly, I’m not too worried about it. I think I have a really good mix of genres as well this month which will help me from getting too bored as well. I think I was actually starting to get burned out on fantasy last month, so this mix should help fix that problem somewhat.

What do you plan to read during April? Do you have a set TBR or are you a mood reader? Have you read any of the books on my list? If so, what did you think about them?

My 2019 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge TBR

For the past couple of years I have participated in the annual POPSUGAR reading challenge… and with abysmal results. However, it’s a new year (unfortunately, same me) and I’m really going to try and actually complete it this year. It’s always a long shot for me as some of the prompts don’t really excite me for one reason or another (like I really don’t appreciate poetry.. oops?). But I’m going to do my best to finish this really intense reading challenge this year. It’s going to be a uphill battle, but I’m willing to make the trek! And for me, the best way to do so is to plan ahead with a TBR. I’ve actually come up with a couple of options for some of the prompts to help with my indecisive reading habits.

If you would like to learn more about this reading challenge, please visit the official Goodreads reading group. They have tons of participants and also discussions on books that would work for each prompt. It’s quite possibly the best group on Goodreads that I’ve ever come across. NO LIE.
