My Top 5 Favorite Reads from this Winter

I realized that I don’t ever really talk about which of my recent reads really pushed themselves to the top of pile. And recently, I’ve read some really awesome books that I think deserve to be highlighted for all of you lovely people! It was actually a lot harder than I originally thought it was going to be to narrow it down to only 5 choices. However, I was able to do it! Yay, me!

Defy the Stars (Constellation, #1) Claudia Gray

Let me count the ways that I am obsessed with anything that Claudia Gray writes… Seriously, it’s a lot. If androids who only can speak literally make you giggle outrageously, then you’ll really enjoy this book. The banter between the two main protagonists will leave a huge smile on your face. Bonus points for epic space adventure!

The Dark Days Pact (Lady Helen, #2) by Alison Goodman

I just want to know why more people haven’t picked up this series yet. Seriously, who doesn’t love a Regency setting mixed with the paranormal?! The amount of details and research that Goodman put into this story is just so amazing. Also, kickass women!!

The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy, #1) by S.A. Chakraborty

This book was sooo worth all of the hype that it was getting when it was first released. The political complexities and world-building was just phenomenal. This seriously solidified itself as one of my all-time favorites. I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW!!!

Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown

I don’t even need to explain this one. Pierce Brown is just an amazing author and with this newest addition to the Red Rising series, the story has become even more complex than ever before. The fact that we are getting the next book so soon just makes me insanely happy. I think this should be the new trend in publishing! No pressure…

Rebel Spring (Falling Kingdoms, #2) by Morgan Rhodes

After the mediocrity of Falling Kingdoms, I went into this next book with my expectations really tempered. But holy shit, this book just blew me away!!! The story has now really expanded and I was finally able to connect with more of the characters. Also, the action finally ramped up with this one and that cliffhanger has got me all kinds of excited for the next book!

What are some of your favorite books that you read this past winter? Did you have a really good reading season? Did you enjoy more books than you originally thought you would? Were than any surprise favorites? Disappointments?

February Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

I ended up not reading as much as I had originally planned in February, but I think it’s okay to have months where you just take it a little easy with your reading. If I had tried forcing myself to speed through as many books as I could, I would no doubt send myself into a reading slump (it never fails). Luckily, I’ve been taking time with my books and mixing them up some with Netflix. I also binged the entire K-drama Reply 1997 and am now obsessed. So all in all, I’d call it a pretty successful month!

How did your reading month of February go? Were you able to read all of the books on your TBR? Did you read any new favorites? Did you do anything fun or interesting? What book did you like the least?

WWW Wednesday – February 14th, 2018

Welcome to WWW Wednesday which is currently being hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. It’s really just a place to do little update on what all you’ve been reading lately. Anyone is welcome to join, just leave a link to your post in the comments and be sure to give the appropriate credit to Sam!

The Three W’s are:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

  • The Disappearances by Emily Bain Murphy – audiobook
  • I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo – physical book
  • Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View by Ben Acker – physical book

Still working my way through The Disappearances and From a Certain Point of View. I actually made some progress today with my audiobook, so I’m hoping that I’ve finally turned a point in this story where I actually WANT to listen to it. I also decided to pick up another book to break up all of the short stories in From a Certain Point of View. I’m enjoying I Believe in a Thing Called Love so far. It’s cute, if a tad bit silly. It did turn me onto finally trying out a k-drama, so I guess there’s that! 🙂

Rebel Spring (Falling Kingdoms, #2) by Morgan Rhodes – physical book, 5/5 stars

Ummm, can we talk about how much better this book was than the first book? I mean, I was soooo invested in this story! I even enjoyed reading from all of the different characters POVS. Also, why am I really starting to ship Magnus and Cleo? Oh, that’s right, it’s because I’m a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope. Yeah, I’m totally shipping those two.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Belles (The Belles, #1) by Dhonielle Clayton
  • The Queen of the Tearling (The Queen of the Tearling, #1) by Erika Johansen

Next I’ll be buddy reading these two with Britt. I’ve had The Queen of the Tearling on my TBR for far too long and I can’t believe that I’m just now getting to it. I have a feeling that it’s going to be a book that I really enjoy! Also, I don’t even have to explain how excited I am to start The Belles! I’ve only been hearing good things about this book and I’m ready to dive in!

What are you currently reading?

  • The Disappearances by Emily Bain Murphy – audiobook
  • Rebel Spring (Falling Kingdoms, #2) by Morgan Rhodes – physical book

The Disappearances is still dragging a bit for me. I like the little bit of mystery in the plot but not much is really happening. This might’ve been a story I should’ve picked up a physical copy instead, but hopefully it’ll pick up the more I get into it.

Rebel Spring is really good. I’m enjoying this second book so much more than the first. It’s fast-paced and so many different plot lines are all happening at once. I also am loving the political intrigue, as per usual.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown –  physical book, 5/5 stars
  • The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air, #1) by Holly Black – physical book, 4/5 stars

I’m sure you’re not surprised by the fact that Iron Gold deserves all of the stars in the world. This book is AMAZING. I will never get tired of this world. EVER. Seriously, if you’ve been putting this series off, pick it up now! You won’t regret it.

The Cruel Prince was also a really enjoyable read. I shouldn’t have expected anything less than a perfect atmospheric fae novel from Black. While I did guess a couple of the big plot twists, I still had a great time while reading this one. I’m really interested in seeing where this series goes next.

Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View by Ben Acker

I’m finally going to pick this sucker up. I’ve been craving some more Star Wars recently thanks to the trailer for Solo and this one seems like the perfect way to jump back into this world. This one also has some of my favorite authors in it, so I’m really excited about it!

My February TBR!

Someone explain to me how it can already be February? Because I just don’t understand how it was just December yesterday and now February is tomorrow. HOW?!?!?!

Also, if some of these look similar to my January TBR, then it’s obviously because I didn’t get to them. I didn’t do the best job sticking with my original TBR, alright? I’m only human… Jeeze.

  • The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air, #1) by Holly Black
  • I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo
  • Rebel Spring (Falling Kingdoms, #2) by Morgan Rhodes
  • The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue (Guide, #1) by Mackenzi Lee
  • Wandering Star (Zodiac, #2) by Romina Russell
  • The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
  • Cress (The Lunar Chronicles, #3) by Marissa Meyer
  • The Belles (The Belles, #1) by Dhonielle Clayton – Hype or Like Friday BOTM
  • Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View by Ben Acker
  • The Shadow Hour (The Girl at Midnight, #1) by Melissa Grey
  • The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher
  • Tower of Dawn (Throne of Glass, #6) by Sarah J. Maas

Let’s be honest here, I’m also a mood reader so we’ll see if I actually get to all of these or decide to switch it up like I did in January. I’m just really cool that way. 😉

What do plan on reading in February? Have you read any of the books on my TBR? If so, what did you think of them?

What are you currently reading?

  • The Disappearances by Emily Bain Murphy – audiobook
  • Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown – physical book

I only listened to a little bit of The Disappearances so I’m not really far enough along yet to have an opinion. I guess I do like that it’s set in WWII, which I wasn’t aware of before I bought it. You know how I like my historical fiction!

I’m about 100 pages into Iron Gold and I’m already obsessed. It feels soooo good to be back in this world! I’m also really liking all of the different POVs. I think my favorite has to be Lysander, which I wasn’t expecting. I love that he’s a booknerd and so smart! Also, Victra is still awesome and my fictional twin. 🙂

What did you recently finish reading?

  • The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis – audiobook, 3/5 stars
  • Into the Bright Unknown (The Gold Seer Trilogy, #3) – physical book, 4/5 stars
  • The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy, #1) by S.A. Chakraborty – physical book, 5/5 stars
  • The School for Good and Evil (The School for Good and Evil, #1) by Soman Chainani – physical book, 3/5 stars
  • These Shallow Graves by Jennifer Donnelly – physical book, 5/5 stars

I finished all of these books during my personal #24in48 read-a-thon this past weekend. I had a really good reading weekend overall and enjoyed all of these books for the most part. However, The City of Brass and These Shallow Graves are the two main stars. I would actually officially list The City of Brass as one of my all-time favorite books now. It was THAT amazing.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Since I can’t decide what to read next because my FairyLoot with The Cruel Prince hasn’t even shipped yet… Here’s the books left on my January TBR. Hopefully I’ll be able to figure out what to read next before I finish Iron Gold. I obviously won’t be finishing all of these before February, haha!

  • From a Certain Point of View by Ben Acker
  • Wandering Star (Zodiac, #2) by Romina Russell
  • Rebel Spring (Falling Kingdoms, #2) by Morgan Rhodes

Well as 2017 comes to a close (in just a few days, in fact!), I’m already looking forward to what 2018 has in store for me.. Have I figured out what my reading goals for this coming year?
