Book Review: Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4)

Here’s the deal with Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4) by Sarah J. Maas, and basically, this entire series… It has been my guilty pleasure. That even with all of its faults and issues, they don’t even bother me. I love it and I have proceeded to gobble up these books and enjoyed every second of it, even when I didn’t. And yes, that makes perfect sense.

And I thoroughly went into this series expecting to hate it and find it to be overrated. I just knew it was going to be too juvenile or boring… Heh. Guess I spoke too soon. #ThroneofGlassTrash

The queen has returned.

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past…

She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight.

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die for her. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.

The fourth volume in the New York Times bestselling series continues Celaena’s epic journey and builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.

The Good

  • Lights, Camera, ACTION!!!! – This book was just full of all of the action. It was fast paced and non-stop from start to finish. If you’re one of those people who felt that Heir of Fire dragged in parts, then have no fear, because this one doesn’t have that issue at all!
  • New Characters – I really enjoyed all of the new characters with their individual personalities and history. Arobynn was really interesting and it was nice to finally meet him in person. Nesryn was awesome, but I really felt that Lysandra stole the show. Getting to know her and learn about her history and relationships with Celaena and Arobynn was extremely interesting. And even though Manon isn’t new by now, she’s definitely a different person than she was in the previous book. Her story certainly reached new heights in this book and I expect her to play an even bigger part in the future. Plus, her interactions with Dorian are wonderful. I love them!
  • Plot – I loved how everyone finally came together in this book. You can tell that this book is the catalyst for the main climax of the entire series. All of the players are finally present and everything is starting to come together very quickly. Shit’s about to get REAL, people! And that ending… WTF?! I was literally in shock. Literally.
  • The Men – Yeah, I said it. These fictional men are crazy hot and don’t act like you don’t think so, too… I know you pictured Aedion shirtless, don’t deny it!

    The Bad

    • Chaol – He used to be my favorite but has reallyyyyyy gotten on my nerves in this book and the previous. He’s kind of turned into a whiner and is always poor-pitiful-me about everything. He’s not a team player and won’t accept that Aelin is not the enemy. It aggravates me to no end. I seriously may punch him by the time this series is over with – in my mind, of course.

I don’t even know why I’m bothering to write reviews of this, as I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. If you struggled a bit with Heir of Fire and were debating on whether to stick with this series… DO IT. This book will having you sitting on the edge of you seat.

    Final Verdict: 4/5 Stars

    Tome Topple Read-A-Thon Wrap-Up

Even though the Tome Topple Read-A-Thon doesn’t officially end until 11:59pm tonight, I thought I would go ahead and post my wrap-up for it. I know I won’t be finishing my book in time before it ends, so why not go ahead and face the inevitable – right?

If you would like to find out more about this read-a-thon, you can visit my original post HERE.

Books I Finished or Currently Reading

    Unread = FAILURE

Okay, I know I did HORRIBLY with this read-a-thon. I mean, I really bit the big one this time. But, in my defense, I was a week late getting started on it due to finishing up 2 other books first. Also, I work from 9-5 every day because I’m a big girl and have to be an adult… BOOOOO! This whole adult thing really cuts into my reading time. I envy those of you still in school or don’t have to work!

Anyways, I’m hoping that there might be a holidays read-a-thon going on during the week of Christmas/New Year, because I’m taking my vacation that week and plan to do a shit ton of reading. So if you know of one – please let me know!

Did you participate in the Tome Topple Read-A-Thon? How much were you able to read? Did you make it through your entire TBR? Have you read any of the books that were on my list?

Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass, #5) by Sarah J. Maas

I only just started this book yesterday, but after the whirlwind ride of fun that was Queen of Shadows, I’ve got high hopes for this one! And yes, I know all about the mixed reviews and no, I’m not going to let it rob me of my anticipation. Just let me have this one moment of high hopes before they get bashed into the wall, along with my head.

Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4) by Sarah J. Maas

Y’all, this book was awesome from start to finish. Which was a really nice change, especially after the slower paced Heir of Fire. My full review should be posted in the next few days.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Even though I know that I won’t make it to either of these in time for Tome Topple, I still plan to read these two hulking books next. I’m pretty excited for both, as I’ve heard great things about The Secret History and early reviews for Moon Chosen have been good, as well!

What are you currently reading? What’s on your TBR for December? Have you read any of the books on my list? If so, what did you think of them? Leave a link to your WWW Wednesday in the comments below!

    The Three W’s are:

    • What are you currently reading?
    • What did you recently finish reading?
    • What do you think you’ll read next?

    What are you currently reading?

I’m still currently making my way through Three Dark Crowns but I hope to finish it by tomorrow. The action is still pretty lacking at this point, but I am seeing a gradual build finally so I’m hoping that means I’m getting close! I wanna see some murder! Preferably Joseph’s, but I’ll take what I can get at this point.

I actually have yet to read any actual pages in Queen of Shadows, as I’m trying to finish up the other book first. I know that once I start, it’ll be incredibly hard to put down to read something else. My Tome Topple Read-A-Thon is slowly going down the drain. I’ll be lucky if I can finish even two books at the rate I’m going. For all of you younglings out there, never become an adult and get a real job because it totally cuts into your reading time.

What did you recently finish reading?

I really enjoyed The Diabolic. It was a fun and brutal read, with lots of murder and mayhem. However, there were lots of similarities to the Red Rising series that kept me from rating it higher. I mean, it’s tough to live up to one of my all time favorite books so it’s not really a big deal. I still highly recommend it to everyone!

I buddy read Wolf by Wolf with my one of my blogging partners in crime, Britt @ Geronimo Reads (go check out her awesome blog!). We both really enjoyed it, though we did have some issues with the main character, Yael. I do plan on reading the sequel and I hope that some of those issues are addressed. I wasn’t really sure if I was going to like this book when I first bought it, but I was pleasantly surprised. Yay for my first buddy read!

What do you think you’ll read next?

Once I finish Three Dark Crowns I will officially be able to dive into my Tome Topple TBR all the way. I plan to finish up the ToG series and then start on the new release P.C Cast novel. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because she wrote the House of Night vampire series. I used to love those books when I was in high school so I’m interested in seeing how her new book turns out. You can read all about my Tome Topple Read-A-Thon TBR here.

    Teaser Tuesday – November 22nd, 2016

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme currently being hosted by MizB @ Books and a Beat. All are welcome to participate!

    Rules:

    • Grab your current read.
    • Open to a random page.
    • Share two ‘teaser’ sentences from somewhere on that page.
    • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! You don’t want to give too much away so as to not ruin the book for others!
    • Share the title and author so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR lists if they like your teasers.

I’m still in the middle of Three Dark Crowns but since I already shared a teaser of that one last week, I thought I’d leave it off this week’s post. Sorry, peeps!

Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4) by Sarah J. Maas

Aelin peered down at her former master, her face blank save for a slight tightening around her mouth. “I hope the dark god finds a special place for you in his realm,” she said, and a shiver went down Rowan’s spine at the midnight caress in her tone.

I’m finally getting to start on my TBR pile for the Tome Topple Read-A-Thon. I plan to get A LOT of reading done during this long holiday weekend. Yeahhhhh, buddy!

    Tome Topple Read-a-thon, Fall 2016

Hi, y’all! I will be participating in this fall’s Tome Topple Read-a-thon that is being hosted by Samantha @ Thoughts on Tomes. This read-a-thon is all about finishing up those big daunting books that are currently intimidating you from your shelves!

It begins at midnight on November 18th and continues until 11:59pm on December 1st, both in your own time zone. The only requirements for this read-a-thon is that for the books to count, they must be 500+ pages. You don’t need to read 10, or even finish one. This is just a fun time to pick up those big books at the same time as other readers all over the world, and just be there to support one another. You can follow along and discuss your books with other readers by joining the Goodreads group HERE, or on Twitter by following @tome_topple and using #tometopple.

I will probably be a little late starting this read-a-thon as I plan on finishing Wolf by Wolf and Three Dark Crowns before starting.

    The Three Ws are:

    • What are you currently reading?
    • What did you recently finish reading?
    • What do you think you’ll read next?

    What are you currently reading?

Three Dark Crowns (Three Dark Crowns, #1) by Kendare Blake

Wolf by Wolf (Wolf by Wolf, #1) by Ryan Graudin

I’m currently about 60 pages into Three Dark Crowns. It’s been interesting so far, but there have been a whole lot of character introductions and I’m still trying to remember who is who. Hopefully that gets easier as the story moves along and we actually get to all of the action. Also, Kat is annoying. If I have to read one more mention about her being too small, I’m going to pull my hair out.

I started my first buddy read ever last night with Britt @ Geronimo Reads. We both realized that we had Wolf by Wolf for ages but hadn’t actually read it, so we decided to read it together. I didn’t get far at all into it last night but I plan to do some reading during my lunch break today. I’ve heard great things about this book so I’m looking forward to it!

What did you recently finish reading?

    • The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid – review to come in the next few days
    • Like a River Glorious (The Gold Seer Trilogy, #2) by Rae Carson – Review

Both of these books were really good. I’m a tad bit obsessed with The Gold Seer Trilogy and I wish more people would give it a shot. It’s such a good series and deserves more recognition! And The Diabolic actually lived up to all of the hype! It was a really good YA science fiction standalone that was dark, exciting, and unique. I definitely recommend both of these!

What do you think you’ll read next?

    • Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4) by Sarah J. Maas
    • Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass, #5) by Sarah J. Maas
    • The Secret History by Donna Tartt
    • Moon Chosen (Tales of a New World, #1) by P.C. Cast

All of these books for the Tome Topple Readathon that starts on the 18th. There will be an official post tomorrow about this readathon for those of you who are interested!

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: What is currently on your TBR pile?

    Up Next I Think I’ll Read…

    Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

I know I should continue on and finish out my Smashing Series September until the 1st. However, I don’t expect to finish another series by Saturday after I finish The Beauty of Darkness (The Remnant Chronicles, #3). I guess I’ll just continue my series through October and finish this month out by reading our Hype or Like Friday BOTM. I’ve only read one other of Rowell’s books, Fangirl, and while I enjoyed it, I didn’t have any plans to read another one of her novels. But this one is a fantasy and not contemporary so that’s a major plus in my book! Get it, my “book”? Haha! Feel free to join our Hype or Like Friday group on Goodreads HERE.

What Is Currently On Your TBR?

Hahahahahaha y’all really do not want me to list all of the books that I’ve bought these past few months and haven’t read yet. We would be sitting here until Christmas going over all of them. So for the sake of everyone’s sanity, I shall just list the ones that I plan to read over the next month. A few will be leftovers from Series Smashing September with a sprinkle of randoms thrown in for fun.

Yeah, that’s right – I’m the only loser who has owned Six of Crows since March and hasn’t read it yet! I figured I’d just wait and until Crooked Kingdom was released and binge read the duology. Also, I CANNOT wait to get my hands on The Midnight Star! This trilogy is one of the best and darkest that I’ve read, and I am so excited to see how it ends. If you haven’t read Marie Lu’s The Young Elites series – DO IT. You won’t regret it.

What’s next on your TBR? What are some books that you’ve had for a while but haven’t gotten around to reading yet? Have you read any on my list? Leave a link to your Musing Monday post in the comments!

    Smashing Series September

It’s finally here, the beginning of my month long challenge to finish (or catch up) with as many series that I’ve already started as possible. I’m a binge reader by nature so I thought this would be the best way for me to do this. Let’s see just how well it turns out…

The Wicked Will Rise (Dorothy Must Die, #2) & Yellow Brick War (Dorothy Must Die, #3)

First up to finish is the final two books in the Dorothy Must Die Trilogy by Danielle Paige. I enjoyed this first book when I read it back in the spring. Luckily, I was able to pick both of these books up from the library yesterday – talk about perfect timing!

    The Winner’s Crime (The Winner’s Trilogy, #2) & The Winner’s Kiss (The Winner’s Trilogy, #3)

I read the first book in this trilogy back during BookCon and really enjoyed it. I have been thinking about that cliffhanger ever since. I’ve just got to know how this series ends!!

The Heart of Betrayal (The Remnant Chronicles, #2) & The Beauty of Darkness (The Remnant Chronicles, #3)

I wasn’t enthralled with the first book in this series, The Kiss of Deception, but it did get better as it went along. I also have to know what happens next because of that DAMN CLIFFHANGER!!!! I just hope it’s worth it.

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2)Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3)Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4)Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass, #5)

Throne of Glass was fairly entertaining but I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as ACOTAR. I’ve heard that this series gets better with each book, so I’m looking forward to seeing where it leads. I’m going to need see Celaena actually do badass stuff in these books, because her supposed awesomeness suffered from too much tell and not enough show. I have yet to see the proof that she’s the greatest assassin in the land.

Half Wild (The Half Bad Trilogy, #2) & Half Lost (The Half Bad Trilogy, #3)

This is one of the most unique stories that I’ve read this year. I’ve heard various opinions on the rest of the series so this might be a hit or miss for me.

I think I’m aiming a little too high with this month’s challenge, but I like a little pressure! I’m also hoping to get to Six of Crows & Crooked Kingdom as I’ve preordered the sequel and have been hearing some amazing things about this series. However, I didn’t add it as I bet it’ll be October before I actually am able to read them. I kind of regret waiting to read Six of Crows until the sequel was released – I’ve only had it since February. Yup, that long!

This month should be fun and intense as I speed my way through these awesome series. Feel free to join in for Smashing Series September if you like! All are welcome to jump on the crazy train with me! 🙂
