  • Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye – physical book

It’s the first time in a while that I’m not in the middle of an audiobook. But I’ve put aside Orphan Monster Spy for a while and am instead just enjoying my physical book at the moment. Jane Steele is really good so far! Jane is definitely an intriguing character and I love diving into her psyche. I’m only about a third of the way into this book and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Sadie by Courtney Summers – audiobook
  • Scream All Night by Derek Milman – audiobook

I cannot recommend both of these books enough. Sadie was absolutely amazing – heartbreaking and engaging. While Scream All Night was super quirky and fun. If you enjoy true crime, then you’ll really enjoy Sadie as it definitely has that feel. I recommend the audiobook version to get the full effect, as it is performed by a full cast and really makes the podcast chapters “pop”. I can say with complete confidence that all of the hype is true!

What do you think you’ll read next?

Continuing on with some creepy Halloween-type reads involving zombies and witches, as well continuing on with the next book in the Falling Kingdoms series. I cannot wait to dive into all three of these books!

  • Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye – physical book
  • Sadie by Courtney Summers – audiobook

I finally finished Tower of Dawn last night and so I decided to pick up Jane Steele next. I mean, it’s October, right? Time to pick up some horror and thrillers, which I hardly ever do at any other time of year. I just like my science fiction and fantasy! But I’m really looking forward to this one, as I’ve heard some mixed things on it and can’t wait to see what I think about it.

I have also just started listening to Sadie, as recommended by my little love bug, Britt. She’s been obsessing over it lately and I’ve heard amazing things about it from other people as well. I love that the audiobook has a full cast. That always helps elevate an audiobook from being good to great for me personally.

  • Tower of Dawn (Throne of Glass, #6) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book

I will admit that I put off picking up this book because I just lost all interest in Chaol as a character. However, I was very surprised by just how much I enjoyed this book. It helped widen the scale of this world and had some of the best character development in the entire series so far. Also, can we just stand in moment in awe over some of the revelations that came to light?! Holy smokes, Batman! As if I wasn’t already super hyped enough for Kingdom of Ash, I may spontaneously combust waiting for its release now!!

What do you think you’ll read next?

Any one of these pretty babies is on my radar to pick up next. I’ll probably go with Crystal Storm first though, because I just cannot wait to see what happens next in this series. Also, that cover for Devils Unto Dust is just so freaking badass.

  • Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen – audiobook

Y’all miss me?! But seriously, ever since I went on vacation the first week of September, I just haven’t really been in the reading/blogging mood…. Don’t hate me! But either way, I’m back and ready to get back down book business. Is that a thing? Eh, it is now.

I’m about 75 pages away from finishing Tower of Dawn. Yes, I will openly admit that I wasn’t too excited about this book before I picked it up. While it’s probably still not my favorite in the series, it’s actually really enjoyable. And holy space balls, Batman! There is definitely some very important stuff going on and coming to light that I was not expecting from this book. So if you were one of those people that think you could probably skip this one, DO NOT DO THAT! Seriously, you really need to read it before the finale comes out next month. Then you can thank me for saving you from a terrible decision! No need to send gifts, just shower me in accolades. 😉

Have made zero progress in Orphan Monster Spy… Ah well, c’est la vie.

  • Love & Luck by Jenna Evans Welch – physical book

Super cute contemporary set in Ireland. While I’m not quite sure I enjoyed this one as much as the original, it was still a really fun read and I definitely recommend it. Warning: Cute Irish boys full steam ahead!

What do you think you’ll read next?

I honestly don’t know what I’ll be reading next but since we’re getting into October, it’s probably time to bust out some creepy/magic-themed novels. Plus, I just really need to find out what’s going to happen next in Falling Kingdoms. I need my Magnus to be alright!!!

July Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

July was not a really good reading month for me as I went into a bit of a slump while reading the behemoth, Titans. It took me almost three weeks to push myself through that book and really got me off my reading game. However, I think focusing on shorter books overall for August should help get me back into the groove. Here’s hoping!

How did your reading month in July go? Were you able to read all of the books on your TBR? Did you read any new favorites? What book did you like the least? Did you do anything fun or interesting? Did you fall into a reading slump like I did? What do you plan on reading in August?

ARC Review: Trail of Lightning (The Sixth World, #1)

There are very few novels that revolve around Native American culture, especially fantasy ones. That is why I was so excited to be able to snag an ARC of Trail of Lightning (The Sixth World, #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse, at BookCon. I’m happy to say that it didn’t disappoint!

While most of the world has drowned beneath the sudden rising waters of a climate apocalypse, Dinétah (formerly the Navajo reservation) has been reborn. The gods and heroes of legend walk the land, but so do monsters.

Maggie Hoskie is a Dinétah monster hunter, a supernaturally gifted killer. When a small town needs help finding a missing girl, Maggie is their last—and best—hope. But what Maggie uncovers about the monster is much larger and more terrifying than anything she could imagine.

Maggie reluctantly enlists the aid of Kai Arviso, an unconventional medicine man, and together they travel to the rez to unravel clues from ancient legends, trade favors with tricksters, and battle dark witchcraft in a patchwork world of deteriorating technology.

As Maggie discovers the truth behind the disappearances, she will have to confront her past—if she wants to survive.

Welcome to the Sixth World.

The Good

  • Kick-Ass Female Protagonist – Maggie is pretty much the Buffy of Dinetah. Her whole life revolves around slaying monsters and fighting the darkness that comes with her clan gift. She’s very hard and doesn’t let people get to close to her, which sometimes makes it hard for you to really care about her. However, I liked how there was some nuance to her character and that she wasn’t just some special snowflake, but rather was a borderline antihero (my favorite!). I will say that if you like your main characters to be really easy to like and root for, you may not connect well with Maggie here.
  • Own Voices Native American Representation, WOOHOO!!! – I think we can all agree that Native American representation is severely lacking in literature. Luckily, Roanhorse does an amazing job of bringing Native American myths to life in this world. The entire story is set on a Navajo reservation and all of the gods and monsters come from traditional myths. It was definitely interesting to learn more about Native American culture, as it’s not something that I’ve really explored before.
  • Totally Engaging Plot – The action starts from the very first page and never lets up. Even when there wasn’t much fighting happening, I didn’t find myself getting bored as you’re still learning about the world or the characters. You could definitely tell that Roanhorse was using this story as a way to introduce readers to Native American culture, which I really appreciated. For the most part, the plot flowed extremely well with only a couple of lulls at the beginning of the story.
  • DARKKKKKK – Oh yes, this world is dark and bleak which makes for the perfect setting for a post-apocalyptic urban fantasy. The comparisons to Mad Max meets Buffy the vampire slayer definitely do have some merit here. Don’t expect unicorns and rainbows in this book, no no no.

Sometimes I wonder if it's even Dorothy's fault, or if this place was just rotten from the start, underneath everything. If maybe that's the price you pay for magic..png

The Bad

  • World-Building? – I will admit that I did have a little trouble understanding how this world came to be. There was a little information scattered throughout the book that mentioned how the Sixth World even came to be, but it wasn’t enough to ease some of the confusion I had. You’re basically thrown into this world and expected to already understand how it got to be this way, except you don’t. I’m still not sure how or why Native American gods and monsters are now free to roam the reservation or what their purpose is. I think Roanhorse could’ve explored this a little more. However, this is going to be a series so maybe some of my questions will get answered in the sequels.
  • Lackluster Twist – This is really just a pet peeve of mine, but I thought that the “big reveal/twist” wasn’t at all surprising. A lot of books try to have twists at the end that sometimes fall flat as they’re too easy and were very easy to spot from the beginning, and unfortunately, that was the case for me with this book. But like I said, this is more of a personal bookish pet peeve of mine.

Overall, I thought this was a fun read. I loved exploring a different culture and diving into the myths of the Navajo. I’m really interested in seeing what happens next and can’t wait to learn more about this world.

Final Verdict: 4/5 Stars

Have you read Trail of Lightning? What did you think of it? Do you prefer darker novels to more upbeat ones, or vice versa? What are some other Native American inspired novels that you would recommend?

The Three W’s are:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

  • Lady Thief (Scarlet, #2) by A.C. Gaughen – audiobook
  • Defy the Worlds (Constellation, #2) by Claudia Gray – physical book

No surprise here, but I am LOVING Defy the Worlds right now. The stakes are even higher in this book, with biological warfare going on and my two loves separated by an entire galaxy. Things are really ramping up and I cannot wait to see what’s going to happen next!

I’m not very far into Lady Thief, so I don’t have much of an opinion on it at the moment. However, I think the plot in this second book is more intriguing than the first one. I will say this, you definitely can’t say this series is all rainbows and sunshine. Gaughen isn’t afraid to make things really dark and I can appreciate that for sure, especially in retellings.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • The Diviners (The Diviners, #1) by Libba Bray – audiobook, 5/5 stars
  • A Reaper at the Gates (An Ember in the Ashes, #3) by Sabaa Tahir – physical book, 5/5 stars

I cannot begin to explain how much I am loving the entire An Ember in the Ashes series. It just has everything that I love in a story – great multifaceted characters, engaging plot, epic political intrigue, and a great slow burn romance. I didn’t know that Tahir could take this story and expand it even more, but she did in A Reaper at the Gates and completely knocked it outta the park. I don’t know how I’m going to be able to wait another year for the finale!

The Diviners was a reread for me, as I needed a definite brush up before moving on with the series, since I haven’t read it since it was first released. And I can sincerely say that I enjoyed it just as much this time around. The story is so engaging and I love all of the paranormal aspects to it. I also definitely recommend the audiobook version, as the narrator does such a fantastic job!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Trail of Lightning (The Sixth World, #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse – physical ARC
  • Saints and Misfits by S.K. Ali – physical book

I’m super excited to get to both of these books! They’re both diverse and own voices novels but very different in terms of plot. Trail of Lightning is being likened to an indigenous Mad Max: Fury Road story about a Native American girl fighting monsters in post-apocalyptic New Mexico. Ummmm, YES PLEASE! While Saints and Misfits is a heavy contemporary novel following a Muslim girl who I believe must deal with the issue of sexual assault/harassment from someone within her mosque. Like I said, completely different style novels but both sound totally amazing and I cannot wait to dive into them!

My BookCon Book Haul!

This past weekend, I got to fly to NYC and spend the entire time gallivanting around BookCon with one of my friends! We had such an amazing time chatting with other book lovers, discovering new releases, and just completely engrossing ourselves within the book community. This was our second time attending, the first being the year it was held in Chicago, and I highly recommend going at least once in your life if you have the chance. I personally felt that the event was better organized when it was held in Chicago, but I still really enjoyed NY as well.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to snag any tickets for autographs with the bigger authors. But I was still able to get a few that didn’t require tickets, such as Naomi Novik, Grady Hendrix, and Natasha Ngan! I tried to wait in line for Victoria Schwab’s signing but we were 161st in line and it didn’t even start for almost two hours, so we figured we could do more in those two hours and ended up getting out of the line. Smart choice too, because then we were able snag PenguinTeen’s mystery 2019 ARC! Eeeeeeeeekkkkkk!

Anyways… now on to the haul! (Which is really the only reason you’re reading this post, let’s be real. Haha!)

Hardcovers

  • Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl
  • The Sandcastle Empire by Kayla Olson
  • Love and Luck by Jenna Evans Welch
  • The Smoke Thieves (The Smoke Thieves, #1) by Sally Green
  • The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli
  • Devils Unto Dust by Emma Berquist
  • Reign the Earth (The Elementae, #1) by A.C. Gaughen

I will admit that I bought a couple of these, but the rest I won in giveaways/games during the convention. I’m probably most excited about Neverworld Wake, Devils Unto Dust, and Love and Luck. I have been anxiously awaiting for the release of The Smoke Thieves but have tempered my hopes a bit after reading some very mixed reviews.

ARCs

  • Lies, Love, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Julie Wright
  • Escaping from Houdini (Stalking Jack the Ripper, #3) by Kerri Maniscalco
  • Rabbit & Robot by Andrew Smith

Sooooooo… I guess this means I need to read the first two books in Stalking Jack the Ripper series, huh? Yup, that’s exactly what it means. Also, I hadn’t heard of Rabbit & Robot before I won this book, but now I’m really excited to pick it up. It sounds all kinds of wacky fun set in space. Sign me up!

  • That’s Not What Happened by Kody Keplinger
  • We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix – signed
  • Kill the Farm Boy (The Tales of Pell, #1) by Delilah S. Dawson & Kevin Hearne

All three of these books were new to me when I picked them up, but each sounds amazing. I’m super excited to dive into a little horror, some comedic fantasy, and even heavy contemporary (which we all know is not something I typically go for). I think Kill the Farm Boy could be a potential new favorite for me.

  • Trail of Lightning (The Sixth World, #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse
  • Pride by Ibi Zoboi
  • Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik – signed

I wish I had a video of the madness that occurred while trying to line up for the Naomi Novik signing. It was literally a freaking mosh pit, as people tried snatching the tickets they were handing out to get a book. IT WAS INSANE! I mean, security literally had to come up and push everyone back. But luckily I got a ticket and was able to get a personalized ARC and meet Novik… Fangirl moment!

  • Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri
  • Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan – signed
  • Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte – PenguinTeen mystery 2019 ARC
  • The Brilliant Death by Amy Rose Capetta

All of these books sound completely amazing, but I’m probably most excited about Empire of Sand and Four Dead Queens. The Brilliant Death has one of the most intriguing plots that I’ve heard of in a long time. I’ll be very interested in picking it up soon! I’ve also been hearing good things about Girls of Paper and Fire, which makes me excited!

Overall, I’m extremely thrilled with my BookCon book haul! I have been introduced to some amazing new books that I haven’t heard of before and that’s the best thing about it. I can’t wait to pick up all of these books!!!

Did you attend BookCon? If so, what books did you get there? Have you read any of the books on my list? If so, what did you think of them? Are any of these books new to you?

Try A Chapter: Round #2

I first did this back in February when I wasn’t really sure what book I wanted to read next. After finishing up Crooked Kingdom the other night, I was having the same mini-crisis as I stared at my TBR bookshelf and wanted to read ALL THE BOOKS! Everything sounded so good that I just didn’t know how to pick only one. Luckily, I remembered this awesome tag created by BookParadise on Youtube. Praise the book gods!

RULES:

  • Pick 5 (or more) books from your tbr
  • Read the first chapter of all of them (including the prologue if there is one)
  • Tell your readers if you’re sold on the book and what you thought of the first chapter.
  • Are you going to finish the book this month?

I picked 5 fairly different books this time around, just like I did before. I actually let one of my guy friends choose from like 25 different books based on their spines and this is the list he came up with, haha!

My Choices:

  1. Fuse (Pure, #2) by Julianna Baggott
  2. Age of Myth (The Legends of the First Empire, #1) by Michael J. Sullivan
  3. Artemis Awakening (Artemis Awakening, #1) by Jane Lindskold
  4. The Wonder by Emma Donoghue
  5. The Clockwork Dynasty by Daniel H. Wilson

To be a Pure is to be perfect, untouched by Detonations that scarred the earth and sheltered inside the paradise that is the Dome. But Partridge escaped to the outside world, where Wretches struggle to survive amid smoke and ash. Now, at the command of Partridge’s father, the Dome is unleashing nightmare after nightmare upon the Wretches in an effort to get him back.

At Partridge’s side is a small band of those united against the Dome: Lyda, the warrior; Bradwell, the revolutionary; El Capitan, the guard; and Pressia, the young woman whose mysterious past ties her to Partridge in way she never could have imagined. Long ago a plan was hatched that could mean the earth’s ultimate doom. Now only Partridge and Pressia can set things right.

To save millions of innocent lives, Partridge must risk his own by returning to the Dome and facing his most terrifying challenge. And Pressia, armed only with a mysterious Black Box, containing a set of cryptic clues, must travel to the very ends of the earth, to a place where no map can guide her. If they succeed, the world will be saved. But should they fail, humankind will pay a terrible price…

Option #1: This one included a small prologue where we are introduced to a new character, who kind of creeped me out a bit, not gonna lie. However, this series in general is just a tad creepy anyways. But the opening chapter was very engrossing jumping right into the story a few months after the end of the previous book. It was Pressia’s POV chapter and I loved how it ended on a cliffhanger with her. I’m really intrigued to see what happens next with her.

Since time immemorial, humans have worshipped the gods they call Fhrey, truly a race apart: invincible in battle, masters of magic, and seemingly immortal. But when a god falls to a human blade, the balance of power between humans and those they thought were gods changes forever.

Now only a few stand between humankind and annihilation: Raithe, reluctant to embrace his destiny as the God Killer; Suri, a young seer burdened by signs of impending doom; and Persephone, who must overcome personal tragedy to lead her people. The Age of Myth is over. The time of rebellion has begun.

Option #2: This one started off immediately, with the catalyst to the main conflict happening within the first 10 pages. I really enjoyed Raithe as a main character, even in just the short amount of time. He was funny and his sarcastic interactions with another character, Malcolm, had me laughing aloud. I definitely could tell by the writing that this is going to be a true epic fantasy tale.

Artemis is a pleasure planet created by a technologically advanced human empire that provided its richest citizens with a veritable Eden to play in. All tech was concealed and the animals (and the humans brought to live there) were bioengineered to help the guests enjoy their stay…

But the Empire was shattered in a horrific war; centuries later humanity has lost much of the advanced technology, and Artemis is a fable told to children. Until young archeologist Griffin Dane finds intriguing hints that send him on a quest to find the lost world.

After crashing his ship, he encounters Adara the Huntress and her psych-linked companion, the puma Sand Shadow. Their journey with her will lead Dane to discover the planet’s secrets…and perhaps provide a key to give unimagined power back to mankind.

Option #3: I think the premise for this story sounds so interesting. It’s part science fiction, part action-adventure and has me really intrigued. I actually wanted to be an archaeologist when I was in high school, so I was able to easily connect with Griffin. I appreciated that this story immediately starts off with action. It’s so much easier to become engaged with the plot and story immediately when that happens. I also liked how the writing was easy to follow along with, whereas some science fiction novels can leave you scratching your head with so much terminology.

In the latest masterpiece by Emma Donoghue, bestselling author of Room, an English nurse brought to a small Irish village to observe what appears to be a miracle-a girl said to have survived without food for months-soon finds herself fighting to save the child’s life.

Tourists flock to the cabin of eleven-year-old Anna O’Donnell, who believes herself to be living off manna from heaven, and a journalist is sent to cover the sensation. Lib Wright, a veteran of Florence Nightingale’s Crimean campaign, is hired to keep watch over the girl.

Written with all the propulsive tension that made Room a huge bestseller, THE WONDER works beautifully on many levels–a tale of two strangers who transform each other’s lives, a powerful psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil.

Option #4: I was a little unsure how I was going to feel about this one. I don’t typically pick up mystery/thrillers very often, but I have to say that this one surprised me a bit. I was immediately intrigued by what was going to happen next. I couldn’t wait to flip the page to learn more about the situation that Lib found herself in. I also really liked the writing style, it flowed very well but was also straightforward. I also like how I didn’t really care for Lib. She’s a bit full of herself and quite judgmental towards the Irish, which I thought was a good choice that reflected the feelings of that era.

Present day: When a young anthropologist specializing in ancient technology uncovers a terrible secret concealed in the workings of a three-hundred-year-old mechanical doll, she is thrown into a hidden world that lurks just under the surface of our own. With her career and her life at stake, June Stefanov will ally with a remarkable traveler who exposes her to a reality she never imagined, as they embark on an around-the-world adventure and discover breathtaking secrets of the past…

Russia, 1725: In the depths of the Kremlin, the tsar’s loyal mechanician brings to life two astonishingly humanlike mechanical beings. Peter and Elena are a brother and sister fallen out of time, possessed with uncanny power, and destined to serve great empires. Struggling to blend into pre-Victorian society, they are pulled into a legendary war that has raged for centuries.

The Clockwork Dynasty interweaves past and present, exploring a race of beings designed to live by ironclad principles, yet constantly searching for meaning. As June plunges deeper into their world, her choices will ultimately determine their survival or extermination.

Option #5: Out of all of my choices, this one was originally calling to me the most. It had a little bit of everything – steampunk, action, history, etc. And why is it that I feel like steampunk has a fall feel to it? Am I the only one who thinks that? Either way, I thought this one started off pretty good. Nothing really exciting happened, though I thought the prologue was very well done. I am very interested in seeing where the story will go from here though!

And The Winner Is…

Artemis Awakening (Artemis Awakening, #1)

I think I’m really in the mood for science fiction right now. It’s one of my favorite genres and lately has just really been speaking to me. I also was really intrigued by the premise of this story, as well. It looks like it might almost venture into some sort of Indiana Jones-style adventure story and that excites me. It’s also less than 300 pages long which means it should be really quick to get through, which might leave me enough time to pick up another book before October! (I’m looking at you, The Wonder!)

Do you ever have trouble deciding on just one book to pick up? How do you determine what book you’ll read next? Have you read any of the books on my list? If so, what did you think about them?

10 Books for the Man in Your Life…

I’m pretty sure that we all know at least one guy that we would really like to get into reading, whether it’s your boyfriend, husband, dad, brother, or friend. For me personally, I always feel a sense of accomplishment when I can bring someone new into the wonderful world of reading. And I’m not really sure why, but it seems to be easier to get a girl to read than a guy. Well, I’m here to make things a little less difficult for all of you having a hard time find the perfect book…. You’re welcome. 🙂

Red-Rising-Trilogy-by-Pierce-Brown

1. Red Rising Trilogy by Pierce Brown

This trilogy is a fast-paced epic science fiction adventure. It will satisfy all of that manly need for violence and revenge, as well as giving you a cause to really root for. Also, Sevro is almost reason enough to read this series. Your guy will definitely find his new favorite person. My dad and brother both love this series so I can vouch for its attractiveness to men.

2. Shades of Magic Trilogy by V.E. Schwab

I think the guys will appreciate the multiple POVs in this novel, that will keep things interesting for them. I also think they will appreciate that the magical world is structured less fanciful and more mature. Lila is also a total badass who will be a nice female character that they will find easier to relate to, especially if they’re lame like my brother and prefer to only read male POVs. Those boys….

3. The Illuminae Files Trilogy by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

The unique format and on-the-edge-of-your-seat plotline will leave any guy begging for more. I got my dad to read Illuminae and he loved it. The characters are funny and the story is non-stop action. What more could you ask for?

4. Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore

Honestly, everyone should read this book. It’s funny, completely original, and is the perfect quick read. Guys will appreciate Biff’s, well, interesting view of Jesus’ life and find themselves crying from laughing so hard at some of the situations these two besties get into. (One being a very interesting encounter with some prostitutes. Yep, I’m serious.)

5. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Does your dude enjoy video games? Movies? 80’s music? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then there is a good chance that he will enjoy reading this novel about a teen who goes on a quest through virtual reality to find a treasure left by the creator. This book is chock full of pop culture references that will leave you with a sense of nostalgia and a whole lot of nerd. It’s great!

LarryMcMurtry_LonesomeDove

10. American Gods by Neil Gaiman

Disregarding the fact that Neil Gaiman is just one of the coolest people alive, this book is a great foray into his unique writing style that brings to life such an interesting look at mythology. It also has the added benefit of being brought to television by Starz that is scheduled to premiere on April 30th.

What do you think of my list? Which books would you add? Which books do you disagree with?

Series I Want To Start But Haven’t

If you’re like me then you will have accumulated bookoos of books (see what I did there?!), and can never finish them all before buying more. I’m constantly purchasing new books without finishing all of the other ones that I own. I think at this point, I have over 100 unread books on my bookshelves. Crazy, right? As I was looking them over the other night, I realized that I have tons of unread series – some extremely popular ones at that. This list is a tribute to all of those unread beauties… well not all, just 20 of them. I also kept it to the books that have at least more than one book out so far.

Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Fascinated by the ancient text namedThe Way of Kings and troubled by visions of ancient times, he doubts his sanity.

Across the ocean, Shallan trains under eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar’s niece Jasnah. Though Shallan genuinely loves learning, she plans a daring theft. Her research hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war.

An untested young princess must claim her throne, learn to become a queen, and combat a malevolent sorceress in an epic battle between light and darkness in this spectacular debut—the first novel in a trilogy.

Young Kelsea Raleigh was raised in hiding after the death of her mother, Queen Elyssa, far from the intrigues of the royal Keep and in the care of two devoted servants who pledged their lives to protect her. Long ago, Kelsea’s forefathers sailed away from a decaying world to establish a new land free of modern technology. Three hundred years later, this feudal society has divided into three fearful nations who pay duties to a fourth: the powerful Mortmesne, ruled by the cunning Red Queen. 19. The School for Good and Evil series by Woman Chainani

The first kidnappings happened two hundred years before. Some years it was two boys taken, some years two girls, sometimes one of each. But if at first the choices seemed random, soon the pattern became clear. One was always beautiful and good, the child every parent wanted as their own. The other was homely and odd, an outcast from birth. An opposing pair, plucked from youth and spirited away.

This year, best friends Sophie and Agatha are about to discover where all the lost children go: the fabled School for Good & Evil, where ordinary boys and girls are trained to be fairy tale heroes and villains. As the most beautiful girl in Gavaldon, Sophie has dreamed of being kidnapped into an enchanted world her whole life. With her pink dresses, glass slippers, and devotion to good deeds, she knows she’ll earn top marks at the School for Good and graduate a storybook princess. Meanwhile Agatha, with her shapeless black frocks, wicked pet cat, and dislike of nearly everyone, seems a natural fit for the School for Evil.

But when the two girls are swept into the Endless Woods, they find their fortunes reversed—Sophie’s dumped in the School for Evil to take Uglification, Death Curses, and Henchmen Training, while Agatha finds herself in the School For Good, thrust amongst handsome princes and fair maidens for classes in Princess Etiquette and Animal Communication.. But what if the mistake is actually the first clue to discovering who Sophie and Agatha really are…?

The School for Good & Evil is an epic journey into a dazzling new world, where the only way out of a fairy tale is to live through one.
