August/September Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

I’m ashamed to say that it’s been so long since I’ve actually finished a book. I started Tower of Dawn when I left on vacation at the start of September and still have not finished it. Though, I’m only about 50 pages away from the end so fingers crossed I can finish it tonight! But anywho…. it seems as though my little reading slump bled over into a blogging slump as well this past month. So I’d like to apologize for the lack of posts during September and I promise that things should get back to normal this month. And holy smoke y’all, it’s already October!!!! We are officially into my favorite season and that means Thanksgiving is basically next weekend and then Christmas in two weeks. (I mean, obviously not really but it sure feels that way!) I may or may not already be hyped for 25 Days of Christmas on “Freeform”. I could literally watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas 100 times in a row and never get bored. #NoShame

How did your reading go during August/September? Were you able to read all of the books on your TBR? Did you read any new favorites? What book did you like the least? Did you do anything fun or interesting? Did you fall into a reading slump like I did? What do you plan on reading in October?

ARC Review: Spinning Silver

While I did enjoy the overall story, I wasn’t quite as impressed with Naomi Novik’s, Spinning Silver, as I was with her previous novel, Uprooted. I’m not quite sure if the hype got to me or I was just expecting something a little different.

Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders… but her father isn’t a very good one. Free to lend and reluctant to collect, he has loaned out most of his wife’s dowry and left the family on the edge of poverty–until Miryem steps in. Hardening her heart against her fellow villagers’ pleas, she sets out to collect what is owed–and finds herself more than up to the task. When her grandfather loans her a pouch of silver pennies, she brings it back full of gold.

But having the reputation of being able to change silver to gold can be more trouble than it’s worth–especially when her fate becomes tangled with the cold creatures that haunt the wood, and whose king has learned of her reputation and wants to exploit it for reasons Miryem cannot understand.

The Good

  • Totally Atmospheric! – I think it’s fair to say that at this point we can all agree that Novik definitely knows how to set a tone for her stories. She just has this ability to create a world that completely evokes the essence of original fairytales. If you had told me that she had actually found the original manuscript for Rumpelstiltskin and copied it word for word, I would believe you. This story just feels like it was written such a long time ago. Well done, Novik!
  • All My Independent Ladies – The women completely run this story from start to finish. Our main three characters (Irina, Miryem, and Wanda) are some of the strongest females that I’ve ever read about. They each bring their own kind of strength to the story, completely transforming those around them. Miryem was my personal favorite because she had a bit more of a spicier personality than the other two girls. While Irina had a much more steady type of strength that I admire, and Wanda finally reached her peak self to take charge of her own life. If you’re looking for a book with a wonderful feminist message, you’ll really enjoy this one!
  • Portrayal of Judaism – I really appreciated that Novik took such a realistic historical portrayal of Jews during the Middle Ages. They were normally some of the richest people in towns and villages, usually involved in banking and moneylending. I loved how she made sure to give us some historical tidbits about their lives and how they were treated. It definitely helped ground the overall story in reality. I also enjoyed seeing how their religion helped shape the plot. It’s not something that we see a lot in books and I wouldn’t mind seeing more of it in the future!

WILD (1).png

The Bad

  • Excessive POVs – I really struggled with the multiple point-of-views that would pop in and out throughout the middle of the book. Not only did a few of them not add anything to the actual story, but Novik did not define who was the new speaker and it would sometimes take me a little bit to figure out who we were following now. And as I previously mentioned, some of these additions adding nothing to the overall story, only slowing down the plot. It felt like these were maybe added in during the editing process to help increase the length of the book. I wasn’t a fan at all.
  • Slowww… – While I was never truly bored during the novel, I did feel like the middle dragged quite a bit. It was like we finally get to the interesting part where Miryem becomes involved with Staryk and rather than the plot really get going, it went back and stalled again until the very end. I prefer a bit more action in the middle of books than what I got with this one.

Final Verdict: 3/5 Stars

Have you read Spinning Silver? If so, what did you think of it? Which main character was your favorite? Do you like this one more than Uprooted?

WWW Wednesday – August 22nd, 2018

Welcome to WWW Wednesday which is currently being hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. It’s really just a place to do little update on what all you’ve been reading lately. The Three W’s are:

  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

  • The Lost Vintage by Ann Mah – audiobook
  • Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen – audiobook
  • Renegades (Renegades, #1) by Marissa Meyer – physical book

I’m not even a fourth of the way through The Lost Vintage but I’m enjoying it so far. I’m definitely learning a lot about wine, which is kind of fun. I love that there is two different stories going on at once and I can’t wait to see how they intertwine. And y’all know that I’m such a sucker for a good historical fiction.

I’ve been listening to more of Orphan Monster Spy but it’s not doing much for me so far. It’s very slow and the writing style isn’t my favorite.

I’m not very far into Renegades yet so I don’t have much of an opinion at the moment. I have heard some great things about this book though and can’t wait to really get into it.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Lion Heart (Scarlet, #3) by A.C. Gaughen – audiobook
  • Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik – physical ARC

Well Lion Heart was a total disappointment. The overall plot faded to the background in favor of the most gushy and cheesy romance that I’ve read in the longest time. It was a terrible finale to the series and that ending was absolute garbage in that nothing happened. So if you’re looking for a good Robin Hood retelling, just keep moving on because you’re definitely not missing anything here.

Spinning Silver was an interesting story. I have come to terms that Novik’s writing is fairly slow but that doesn’t really bother me. However, I felt what really bogged this story down was all of the POVs. At one point there might have been almost 6 and it was just too excessive. Only 3 really added anything to the overall plot with the others were just filler and dragged the rest of the story down. So unfortunately for me, this book doesn’t measure up to her previous novel, Uprooted.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Love & Luck by Jenna Evans Welch – physical book
  • Tower of Dawn (Throne of Glass, #6) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book
  • A Gathering of Ravens by Scott Oden – physical book

What are you currently reading?

  • Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen – audiobook
  • Lion Heart (Scarlet, #3) by A.C. Gaughen – audiobook
  • Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik – physical ARC

I haven’t listened to either of my audiobooks this past week… Oops.

I’m enjoying Spinning Silver so far. It’s definitely an interesting take on the original tale and I like how Novik has remade it into her own. I’m not too far into the book right now and so it’ll be interesting to see where the story goes from here. So far there hasn’t been a sign of any romance, but I wouldn’t mind if some shows up further in the novel. I always like at least a little bit in the background. Guess I’m a romantic at heart..

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Sightwitch (The Witchlands, #0.5) by Susan Dennard
  • Smoke and Iron (The Great Library, #4) by Rachel Caine – REVIEW
  • Brunette Ambition by Lea Michele

I’m absolutely in love with The Great Library series, so I don’t think it’s any surprise that the latest book blew me away. It was fast paced from start to finish and you could really feel the intensity of the situation our characters were in. I was on the edge of my seat the entire book! I also loved how we got points of views from almost all of the main characters at one point or another. It really brought a new facet to this series. I highly recommend it!

Sightwitch is only my second novella, but OH. MY. GOSH. It was soooo good, y’all. I loved how engrossing the story was. It really brought me back into this world and made me realize how much I had missed it. I definitely see a reread of the previous two books in my near future before Bloodwitch comes out early next year.

While Brunette Ambition wasn’t the Glee behind-the-scenes book that I was hoping for, I still enjoyed it. Michele started from the beginning as she grew up on Broadway and all of the life lessons she learned there. I also loved that she included some of her favorite recipes and skincare regimen. While I was hoping for a more in-depth look into her time on Glee, I can’t say that I was disappointed by the direction she took. This book was released less than a year after Cory Monteith’s death, and I believed was actually delayed due to that tragedy. I think it was easier for her to focus on things other than what would bring up memories of him.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Renegades (Renegades, #1) by Marissa Meyer – physical book
  • Tower of Dawn (Throne of Glass, #6) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book
  • Love & Luck by Jenna Evans Welch – physical book

What are you currently reading?

  • Lion Heart (Scarlet, #3) by A.C. Gaughen – audiobook
  • Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen – audiobook
  • Smoke and Iron (The Great Library, #4) by Rachel Caine – physical book

Finally started back to listening to Lion Heart again today. I plan to finish this one up before the end of the day, but we’ll see.

I haven’t listened much to Orphan Monster Spy lately as I’ve been watching Glee while on the treadmill instead of listening to my audiobooks. I feel like I should be ashamed by this but I’m not. So there.

I’m less than 50 pages into Smoke and Iron but I can tell that I’m really going to enjoy this book. We are finally getting Khalila’s point of view and I’m so excited! I love how this series continues to expand and I feel like it’s very close to reach its climax. I cannot wait to see how this all ends!

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Frozen Tides (Falling Kingdoms, #4) by Morgan Rhodes – physical book
  • A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3.1) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book

Obviously I loved Frozen Tides, as this series just keeps getting better and better. The plot continues to get even more intricate and exciting.  Also, holy moly plot twist!!! That ending was insane and I loved it. I cannot wait to start the next book and find out what’s going to happen now.

I enjoyed A Court of Frost and Starlight. It was my first novella and I think it did a good job, as it less based around a plotline and focused more on bridging the original trilogy with the upcoming follow-up series. It was great to see where the characters are at now that the war is over and how they’re each coping with that. Also, Nesta is still a total bitch and I still completely love it. So happy that this next series will have her point of view!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Sightwitch (The Witchlands, #0.5) by Susan Dennard – physical book
  • Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik – physical ARC
  • Renegades (Renegades, #1) by Marissa Meyer – physical book

My BookCon Book Haul!

This past weekend, I got to fly to NYC and spend the entire time gallivanting around BookCon with one of my friends! We had such an amazing time chatting with other book lovers, discovering new releases, and just completely engrossing ourselves within the book community. This was our second time attending, the first being the year it was held in Chicago, and I highly recommend going at least once in your life if you have the chance. I personally felt that the event was better organized when it was held in Chicago, but I still really enjoyed NY as well.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to snag any tickets for autographs with the bigger authors. But I was still able to get a few that didn’t require tickets, such as Naomi Novik, Grady Hendrix, and Natasha Ngan! I tried to wait in line for Victoria Schwab’s signing but we were 161st in line and it didn’t even start for almost two hours, so we figured we could do more in those two hours and ended up getting out of the line. Smart choice too, because then we were able snag PenguinTeen’s mystery 2019 ARC! Eeeeeeeeekkkkkk!

Anyways… now on to the haul! (Which is really the only reason you’re reading this post, let’s be real. Haha!)

Hardcovers

  • Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl
  • The Sandcastle Empire by Kayla Olson
  • Love and Luck by Jenna Evans Welch
  • The Smoke Thieves (The Smoke Thieves, #1) by Sally Green
  • The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli
  • Devils Unto Dust by Emma Berquist
  • Reign the Earth (The Elementae, #1) by A.C. Gaughen

I will admit that I bought a couple of these, but the rest I won in giveaways/games during the convention. I’m probably most excited about Neverworld Wake, Devils Unto Dust, and Love and Luck. I have been anxiously awaiting for the release of The Smoke Thieves but have tempered my hopes a bit after reading some very mixed reviews.

ARCs

  • Lies, Love, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Julie Wright
  • Escaping from Houdini (Stalking Jack the Ripper, #3) by Kerri Maniscalco
  • Rabbit & Robot by Andrew Smith

Sooooooo… I guess this means I need to read the first two books in Stalking Jack the Ripper series, huh? Yup, that’s exactly what it means. Also, I hadn’t heard of Rabbit & Robot before I won this book, but now I’m really excited to pick it up. It sounds all kinds of wacky fun set in space. Sign me up!

  • That’s Not What Happened by Kody Keplinger
  • We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix – signed
  • Kill the Farm Boy (The Tales of Pell, #1) by Delilah S. Dawson & Kevin Hearne

All three of these books were new to me when I picked them up, but each sounds amazing. I’m super excited to dive into a little horror, some comedic fantasy, and even heavy contemporary (which we all know is not something I typically go for). I think Kill the Farm Boy could be a potential new favorite for me.

  • Trail of Lightning (The Sixth World, #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse
  • Pride by Ibi Zoboi
  • Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik – signed

I wish I had a video of the madness that occurred while trying to line up for the Naomi Novik signing. It was literally a freaking mosh pit, as people tried snatching the tickets they were handing out to get a book. IT WAS INSANE! I mean, security literally had to come up and push everyone back. But luckily I got a ticket and was able to get a personalized ARC and meet Novik… Fangirl moment!

  • Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri
  • Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan – signed
  • Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte – PenguinTeen mystery 2019 ARC
  • The Brilliant Death by Amy Rose Capetta

All of these books sound completely amazing, but I’m probably most excited about Empire of Sand and Four Dead Queens. The Brilliant Death has one of the most intriguing plots that I’ve heard of in a long time. I’ll be very interested in picking it up soon! I’ve also been hearing good things about Girls of Paper and Fire, which makes me excited!

Overall, I’m extremely thrilled with my BookCon book haul! I have been introduced to some amazing new books that I haven’t heard of before and that’s the best thing about it. I can’t wait to pick up all of these books!!!

Did you attend BookCon? If so, what books did you get there? Have you read any of the books on my list? If so, what did you think of them? Are any of these books new to you?

A Gryffindor Reading List

Here’s to you, brave and daring Gryffindors!

1. Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

Harry-Potter-books

Oh, come on! You know that this series is a given for our Gryffindors!

2. Wolf by Wolf Duology by Ryan Graudin

Yael is one badass chick who isn’t afraid to risk her life in order to take down the most terrible man in the world, Adolf Hitler. Remind you of a famous Gryffindor perhaps?

3. Uprooted by Naomi Novik

22544764

A young girl brave enough to work for a mysterious sorcerer and then willing to brave a dangerous forest in order to save her home? Yup, Agnieszka is a Gryffindor.

4. The Illuminae Files Series by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

I think all Gryffindors can appreciate and admire the extreme bravery it takes to try and save multiple ships full of refugees from an insane AI, a termination squad, and some crazy man-eating alien snakes.

5. The Gold Seer Trilogy by Rae Carson

It takes a lot of heart and courage to brave a trek across the United States from Georgia to California during the California Gold Rush. It takes even more when you’re a teenage girl doing it alone.

6. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

81j3rfXRwmL

Vianne and Isabelle are two of the bravest women that I’ve ever read about. I think all Gryffindors would gladly accept them in their House.

7. The Red Rising Trilogy by Pierce Brown

Red-Rising-Trilogy-by-Pierce-Brown

I think we can all agree that every single thing that Darrow has to go through in order to destroy the Golds, takes a hell of a lot of bravery. He’s also pretty damn chivalrous too, with just a hint of pride (especially when he gives his speeches!). Kind of the perfect Gryffindor combo, wouldn’t you say?

8. The Valiant by Lesley Livingston

30375703

I think just being a gladiator in general takes a lot of balls. I also think that a Gryffindor would pretty much say, bring it on.

9. Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J. Maas

This series is really all about strong women. I think all Gryffindors would be salivating at the chance to go on an adventure with Aelin and her gang.

10. Not if I See You First by Eric Lindstrom

22701879

There are all kinds of bravery, but I think Parker’s is a special kind. Her independence and strength is inspiring to see. And can you imagine watching her interactions with the Weasley twins in the Gryffindor common room? I need it!

Gryffindors, what did you think about your list? Do you agree with my choices? What books would you add to your list?

Hype or Like Friday – October 28th, 2016

Woohoo, it’s Hype or Like Friday again! This meme and Goodreads group were created by myself, Jill @ Rant and Rave Books, and Britt @ Geronimo Reads. To join our group and find out more information about what it’s all about, please go to our Goodreads page HERE.

October’s BOTM is Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. The weekly topics this month are whichever ones we want to choose from a list of ideas that our members came up with. They are all so much fun! Also, today was supposed to be a review for the BOTM, but I’d already read like 3 years ago and didn’t have time for a reread this month. So if you’re interested, I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads. Instead, I’ll be doing another topic this week. Enjoy!

RULES:

  • Answer the weekly discussion topic.
  • Optional: Discuss your chosen hyped book of the week.
  • Optional: Talk about your progress on the BOTM.

TOPIC OF THE WEEK (that I chose): Magical Reads – Halloween makes me think of magic and witches. So here’s a list of some books that center around witches and magic!

The Half Bad Trilogy by Sally Green

This is such a unique take on a witches story and is a really great trilogy. It tackles the grey area of good and bad pretty well for YA. I was surprised how dark it got in certain parts but I think that made it more realistic. You can read my reviews for it HERE and HERE.

23734628

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

Obviously, I can’t leave out our favorite “worst Chosen One ever”! I mean, this story is about a wizard and his adventures at Watford, School of Magic. You can read my review of it HERE.

22544764

Uprooted by Naomi Novik

Because there’s a wizard, full of a creepy magical forest that is basically alive and homicidal. What more do you need?! You can find my review for this book HERE.

3

The Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling

This one doesn’t even need a reason.

27405351

How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather

This book is my current read. Don’t ask me what it’s about because I won’t actually start it until tonight. I just know it has something to do with the descendants of the victims of the Salem Witch Trials. The perfect read for Halloween weekend, obviously.

all-souls-trilogy-deborah-harkness

The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness

This trilogy is one of my all-time favorite general fiction series. It’s got witches, vampires, time-travel, and some seriously scientific moments that will get any science and math nerds all excited. It gets a lot of mixed reactions from people, but I love it and have no shame in saying so.

What are some of your favorite magical, witchery reads? Have you read any from my list? What are you reading this Halloween weekend?

Stand Alone August Wrap-Up: The End is Here!

Well it’s finally September which means fall is just around the corner! I’m so happy we are now officially done with summer and can start heading towards my favorites time of year – cold weather! And yes, I enjoy the cold. It makes me feel all happy and think of Christmas which is basically the best time of year! But anyways, moving on…

Stand-Alone August was my way of trying to move a bunch of single novels off of my TBR to make room for the wayyyyyyy too many series that I have started but never finished. I prefer to binge read series but for some reason, this year I have started some but have yet to finish them (or at least catch up to the most recent book). So I decided to punch through as many of my standalones as possible first, and then proceed with Smashing Series September. This probably makes no sense to some of you, but I am my own kind of crazy and so it makes sense to me. 😉

August started a little slow for me, unfortunately. It took me a while to really find my reading groove, but once I did, BAM! My original plan was to read 13 books and while I didn’t quite achieve that goal, I did get pretty darn close. I finished 10 books which I think is quite commendable. And what’s even better was that for the most part – they were all really good! Unfortunately, I am still trying to catch up on reviews for all of them but I hope to get caught up over the weekend. Be on the lookout!

Finished…

  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens by Alan Dean Foster – 3 stars
  • My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows, & Brodi Ashton – 5 stars, REVIEW
  • The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin – 4 stars,
  • We Were Liars by E. Lockhart – 4 stars, REVIEW
  • The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller – 4 stars, REVIEW
  • Uprooted by Naomi Novik – 5 stars, REVIEW
  • Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma – 4 stars
  • The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black – 5 stars
  • Da Vinci’s Tiger by L.M. Elliott – 4 stars
  • Asleep by Krystal Wade (currently finishing up today!)

Didn’t Read…

Yeahhhhh, looks like these babies will have to continue waiting for me to pick them up. Makes me kind of sad, actually. If you’ve read any of these 3 books, please let me know in the comments which ones I’m missing out on!

So what do you think about my Stand-Alone August? Have you read any really good standalone novels lately? Want to join in Smashing Series September?
