What are you currently reading?

  • Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown – audiobook
  • Romanov by Nadine Brandes – audiobook, buddy read
  • Supernova (Renegades, #3) by Marissa Meyer  – physical book

No progress really in my audiobooks. I tried to listen to Iron Gold on the plane on my way to Charleston, but I had such a terrible headache at the time that I couldn’t focus. I hope to listen some more though this week.

I’m almost halfway through Supernova and loving it so far. I really enjoy how things really amped up in this finale with everyone’s plans slowly unraveling. I cannot wait to see what is going to happen next to our superheroes. If this ending wrecks me, I may never be able to recover… #ProtectMax

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Somerset by Leila Meacham  – physical book
  • The Queen of Nothing (The Folk of the Air, #3) by Holly Black – physical book

Can I just say that I absolutely adored both of these books? Because I did. Somerset left me in tears at the end, which is exactly what I was hoping for. It really made me want to reread Roses, which I may do in the near future. And The Queen of Nothing was such a a good ending to the trilogy. It really left me wanting more and it’ll be interesting to see if Black continues to write novels set in the same universe as this one and her other books. I think it’s great how she’s been doing that and still connecting them all in little ways. I just want more!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Last Magician (The Last Magician, #1) by Lisa Maxwell – physical book
  • Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor, #2) by Jessica Townsend – physical book
  • The Bear and the Nightingale (Winternight Trilogy, #1) by Katherine Arden – physical book

  • Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown – audiobook
  • Romanov by Nadine Brandes – audiobook, buddy read
  • Somerset by Leila Meacham  – physical book

I’ve made very little progress with my audiobooks this week, as work has been super crazy busy. However, I am flying out to Charleston tomorrow to visit a friend for the weekend, so hopefully I’ll be able to do some listening during the flights. I’m so close to finishing Romanov and I can’t wait to put this boring book behind me for good. Then I’ll really be able to put my focus on Iron Gold.

I’m about halfway through Somerset and absolutely loving it so far. It’s been a few years since I first read Roses, and I’m really enjoying diving back into the family sagas of the Tollivers and Warwicks. However, I’m reaching the period when the Civil War breaks out and I’m already expecting my heart to do some breaking. I definitely better keep some tissues nearby for when the tears begin to fall. If you enjoy wonderful historical fiction novels, I highly suggest picking up Leila Meacham’s books.

  • The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw – physical book

I really enjoyed this story, but mostly because Ernshaw is such an incredible writer. I still can’t believe this was a debut novel, as it certainly doesn’t read that way. I’m even more excited to pick up her latest book because I can only imagine it being even better than this one.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Last Magician (The Last Magician, #1) by Lisa Maxwell – physical book
  • Valiant (Modern Faerie Tales, #2) by Holly Black – physical book
  • Supernova (Renegades, #1) by Marissa Meyer – physical book

The 5 Most Disappointing Books of 2019

Every year we get so excited to pick up new releases or finally grab that one book off the shelf that you’ve been eyeing since you bought it. And unfortunately, there will always be some books that just don’t live up to the expectations that you had. Well, this year there were a few books that failed to hit the mark for me. This doesn’t necessarily mean that I didn’t end up enjoying the book at all, but maybe it just didn’t quite live up to the hype I had built up in my head.

28220899

Freeks by Amanda Hocking

This one just fell a little flat for me. It was interesting but I feel like the paranormal/fantasy aspect of the story could have been more fleshed out and really expanded on. I was hoping for something a bit more creepy than what I actually got. It was more of a love story than a mystery.

36039614

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James

I must be the only person in the world who thought this book was just weird. I will never understand all of the hype that it got. It was obvious what the twist was going to be from the beginning. Talk about a book with too much hype…

9565548

Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1) by Robin LaFevers

This book wasn’t terrible, just lacked as much action as I was expecting. I did enjoy the slow burn romance though, which definitely helped keep my attention. Maybe if I had read the book instead of listening to the audio version, I would’ve enjoyed it more.

40590407

Romanov by Nadine Brandes

Now I am well aware that I’m still in the middle of this one, but I can already tell you that I’m really disappointed by it. Y’all, it’s just so freaking boring. And for those of you in the back… IT’S SOOOOOO BORING! I’m three-fourths of way done with it and her family is just now getting shot. Ugh.

37677964

Pride by Ibi Zoboi

I really liked the idea of concept of this modern day retelling of Pride and Prejudice. However, I just could not stand Zuri enough to care whether she would get a happy ending or not. She was just such an unlikable person and definitely beats Elizabeth Bennett by a mile on being judgmental of others.

  • The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw – physical book

I’ve finally crossed over the halfway point in Romanov. Unfortunately, the plot is still very slow and I find myself not really feeling engage enough to want to listen to it. I’ll finish it eventually but I’m not sure it will still be by the end of this week.

I’m about halfway through The Wicked Deep and I’m really enjoying it so far. There were a few interesting reveals that have piqued my interest especially, so I’m excited to see how that will affect the story moving forward. I’m hoping the pace will pick up soon because of it.

I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed this book. It was engaging and the writing style was fantastic. I’m really excited to be a part of the blog tour for it and you will be seeing my review posted this Friday. Can’t wait to share my love for this story with you all!

I’ve made a bit more progress in Romanov this week, but I am STILL waiting for anything to happen. To say this book is slow with no clear plot at this point is probably an understatement.

I am about halfway through Songs from the Deep, which I am currently reviewing as part of the blog tour through Scholastic Publishing. Y’all, I am loving this story so far. It’s very atmospheric with plenty of secrets running about that keeps you guessing. I can’t wait to see how it ends!

  • Devils & Thieves (Devils & Thieves, #1) by Jennifer Rush – physical book

This book was interesting and I really enjoyed the premise magical biker gangs. I wouldn’t say this was the most groundbreaking read in any way, but I was still entertained by the story. I haven’t heard anything about the sequel which is a shame because I feel like where the story was heading could be a really good change of pace.

As you can tell from my lack of posting the past few weeks, I have been super busy with work which has affected my reading life. So which means that I have made zero progress with my two audiobooks recently. I plan to hopefully get back into them fully today.

I am over halfway through Devils & Thieves and I’m really enjoying it so far. I have had a strange obsession with biker gangs ever since watching Sons of Anarchy (I know, I know!), and so combining that with magic and a will-they-won’t-they romance just ticks all of my boxes. I don’t see this book being mentioned much in the book community though, but I hope more people will start to pick it up.

  • Sanctuary by V.V. James – physical book

I’ll hopefully be posting a full review of this book soon.. but oh my gosh, what a wild ride it was to read! I loved how my opinions changed about everyone multiple times throughout the story and I never really knew what was going on. Seriously, this book needs to be adapted into a film or miniseries. I can see Reese Witherspoon doing something amazing with this. Just know, this is an adult novel and is very dark. But I really recommend anyone looking for a realistic take on what witches and magic would look like in modern times, give this book a try.

  • Sanctuary by V.V. James – physical book

I’m still listening to Iron Gold but it’s been slow moving at the moment, as we’ve just been super busy at work the past week. The same goes for Romanov, which has also been a little boring so far. It’s not quite living up to Brandes’ previous novel, Fawkes. But maybe it’ll get better? Fingers crossed!

I actually haven’t started on Sanctuary yet, but I plan to pick it up during my lunch hour. I’m super excited for this one because I’ve seen rave reviews from those few who’ve read it so far. This one seems like the perfect book to kick off spooky October and I can’t wait!

What did you recently finish reading?

  • The Trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor, #1) by Jessica Townsend – physical book
  • The Gallery by Laura Marx-Fitzgerald – physical book

I really loved both of these books. I haven’t read any middle grade stories in ages, but these two really got me back into the genre. They were exciting, engaging, and just pure fun mixed with a bit of mystery. It was just what I needed to start off the fall season. I will have full reviews posted soon!

I have decided to take off the books that I’m only reading a few pages here and there, to focus only on the books that I’m actively reading. So no more updates on Surprise, Kill, Vanish and Middlemarch until I get back to reading them full time…

Okay, I’m about halfway through The Trials of Morrigan Crow and y’all.. I AM OBSESSED. This book is the most whimsical story that I think I’ve ever read. It’s fun and engaging, and has made me laugh aloud so many times. Morrigan is truly a delight. I feel quite confident in saying this is kind of like a modern day Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I’ve only made a little progress in Iron Gold and will probably continue to be slow going for a bit, as I will also be listening to Romanov starting today for a buddy read with my friend, Britt. I also left Nevermoor at work yesterday and so I picked up The Gallery to satisfy my little reading itch last night after seeing Downton Abbey at the movies. Even though I only read a chapter of it, I found it super intriguing and can’t wait to really dive into it.

Heart of Iron (Heart of Iron, #1) by Ashley Poston – REVIEW

I really enjoyed this book. I saw it where got mixed reviews from people but it worked for me personally. It was fun and kept my attention the entire time, which is what I find to be most important in a book. It cured my reading slump and that’s all that matters.

  • Dreamland Burning by Jennifer Latham – audiobook
  • Middlemarch by George Eliot – physical book
  • Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson – physical book
  • Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal – audiobook

I’m going to be taking my time with Middlemarch and so I’m only like 60 pages into the book so far. It’s been very engaging, even though not much has happened yet. I’m really enjoying all of the characters.

After loving An Enchantment of Ravens, I pretty much knew that Rogerson would be an author that I’m going to love anything she writes. Well, being about 100 pages into Sorcery of Thorns, I can already tell that this will completely the case. This book is so exciting and I’m loving the dynamic between the characters. Also, SO MUCH SARCASM. Yes, Thorn is awesome.

I haven’t listened to much of Dreamland Burning this week, due to the heavy content putting me in a bad head space at the moment. I do plan to finish the story, but I just needed to take a little bit of a break.

Which has lead me to starting Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows. I’m only a couple of chapters into this book so far, but I’m still enjoying it. This definitely seems like the lighthearted read that I needed and I can’t wait to continue with the story.

  • Freeks by Amanda Hocking – physical book

This book didn’t quite live up to my expectations. It was definitely the most average story that I’ve read. It wasn’t the worst book that I’ve ever read, I just feel that there was so much more room for Hocking to expand on the supernatural side of the story. I think the world-building was just really lacking.
