Book Review: Moon Chosen (Tales of a New World, #1)

I’m still not entirely sure of how I feel about Moon Chosen (Tales of a New World, #1) by P.C. Cast. I have very mixed feelings about this novel. Don’t you just hate when that happens?

Chosen to embrace her true identity. Chosen to follow her destiny. Chosen to change her world.

Mari is an Earth Walker, heir to the unique healing powers of her Clan, but she has been forced to turn from her duties, until she is chosen by a special animal ally, altering her destiny forever. When a deadly attack tears her world apart, Mari reveals the strength of her powers and the forbidden secret of her dual nature as she embarks on a mission to save herself and her people. It is not until Nik, the son of the leader from a rival, dominating Tribe, strays across her path that Mari experiences something she has never felt before…

Now evil is coming, and with it, a force more terrible and destructive than the world has ever seen, leaving Mari to cast the shadows from the earth. By breaking Clan Law and forming an alliance with Nik, she must make herself ready. Ready to save her people. Ready to save herself and Nik. Ready to embrace her true destiny…and battle the forces that threaten to destroy them all.

The Good

  • DOGSSSSS! – Okay, I might be a little biased on this one. I’m a dog person, y’all! Who doesn’t love those sweet little cuties?!
  • Unique Plot- I have to say that the plot for this story was very unique. At first I wasn’t sure if this was supposed to be an entirely different world, or what. However, as the story moved along and we got more information and really into the world building, I began to realize that this was our world but very far into the future in what I’m assuming to be a post-apocalyptic type situation. It was interesting to see how the people have all split off into their tribes and developed very different ‘powers’ and such.
  • Characters – I liked all of the characters for the most part. I think Sora might have been my favorite though because I just really enjoyed her sassiness. Nik was a fun character to follow as well. I loved reading his chapters and getting to see his interactions with his friends and father. I found his tribe to be much more interesting than the Earth Walkers. I think that may have something to do with the fact that we actually get to experience them in his chapters. There’s not much interactions between Mari and the rest of her tribe, due to her having to be fairly isolated.

Random Acts Of Kindness.png

The Bad

  • SO MANY WORDS, ZZZZZ… – This book is extremely wordy. I mean it’s 600 pages and very little happens for about the first 300. It takes forever to really get into the plotline, as the author spends too much time trying to get us familiar with the world, tribes, and characters. Unfortunately, I’m still don’t really know anything about this world. Talk about an info-dump that really doesn’t have any info…Yikes!
  • Pacing – I think this one kind of goes hand in hand with the story being so wordy. This book really dragged on for most of it, and didn’t finally get interesting until about 3/4 of the way through. I had no trouble putting it aside in the middle of it and picking up another book to read instead. Luckily, it did start picking up towards the end. I just hate when books take so long to get interesting and then make the ending all great, just to try and get you to stick with the series. So, so cruel!

Overall, this book was both good and bad. I think the bad part stems from the story itself being extremely long and wordy, which bogged down the actual plot. It did begin to speed up at the end, which finally had me hooked. I also am really interested in a new character that was introduced in the last couple of chapters, whom I feel will have a very big role in the rest of the series. I think I will I pick up the next book when it arrives, just to see where the plot is going and if it gets any better.

Final Verdict: 3/5 Stars

Red Queen (Red Queen, #1) by Victoria Aveyard

This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.

The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.

That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.

Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.

But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart

Corrupt Me by Jillian Quinn

I have finally finished all of my other books and can now focus solely on this one. I hope to finish it sometime today, just in time for the start of the Holiday Booktube-a-thon tomorrow. I’m never been a big reader of romance novels but this one is just so engrossing! I love the characters that Jill has created, especially Luca. I’m really interested in seeing how this story ends! I have a feeling it shall be a happy ending… hehe!

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling – This one obviously got a full 5 stars from me. I probably won’t be posting an official review of it though, so sorry about that y’all!
  • Moon Chosen (Tales of a New World, #1) by P.C. Cast – This book was a bit of a mixed bag for me. It was pretty slow moving for most of the book, and for one that’s around 600 pages long, that’s a long time to be slow. However, I liked how it finished so I probably will continue on with the series to see if it gets better. Full review should be up within the next week or so.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I’ll have a post scheduled for later today that will discuss my TBR for the upcoming read-a-thon that begins tomorrow. Be on the lookout for it coming later today! I’ve got 3 days to read 3 books, so wish me luck!

I’m still making my way through both of these books. I have kind of been neglecting them the past few days, because I picked up and then couldn’t put down A Thousand Pieces of You. However, I plan to finish both of them in the couple of days. Corrupt Me is everything a good romance should be! Moon Chosen is definitely an interesting and unique read so far.

This is the December BOTM for Hype or Like Friday… Y’all, it was soooo good! I did not want to put it down because I had to know what was going to happen next. I am dying to get my hands on the rest of this trilogy to see how it all ends. And that Paul is the cutest! I just love him.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling

The Architect of Song (Haunted Hearts Legacy, #1) by A.G. Howard

So I hope to finish both of these before the Holiday Booktube-a-thon on the 29th! I think I can do that because Fantastic Beasts should be a really quick read that I can knock out in less than a few hours. I’m super excited about Architect of Song because I just love Howard’s writing, and I’ve read some great reviews of this one. Who else cannot wait for her newest book, Roseblood, to be released next month?! I mean, a retelling of Phantom of the Opera? I am soooo there!

Slowly making my way through this book, as I haven’t really been reading a whole bunch the past few days. I felt like I needed to take a little step back before I read myself right into a dreaded reading slump. I’m only about 100 pages into this, but I’m enjoying it so far.

Chosen to embrace her true identity. Chosen to follow her destiny. Chosen to change her world.

I’m also still reading Jill’s debut book, Corrupt Me. I haven’t read any more of it since this weekend, as I’m waiting for my physical copy that she sent me to arrive! It’s supposed to be here tomorrow and I am soooooo thrilled! That girl is such an awesome person and one of my besties. You should all go check out her blog at Rant and Rave About Books!

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

This one was enjoyable, even if all of the characters were extremely dislikable – pretty sure that was the point, too. I liked how you start off knowing who’s the murderer and who was killed, and then going back to tell the story of how and why. It was an interesting story, if completely unrealistic. Come on, no college kids are actually like that and I don’t care if it even was the 80’s! I should have a full review up tomorrow for this one.

Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at an elite New England college discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries. But when they go beyond the boundaries of normal morality they slip gradually from obsession to corruption and betrayal, and at last – inexorably – into evil.

What do you think you’ll read next?

These are the rest of the books I plan on reading this month. I may be able to have time to squeeze a couple more in, as I will be on holiday from work for about a week and a half! I’m so excited for this break, and completely thankful that I get to work at a company with such good benefits. I was hoping for a read-a-thon being hosted during that week, but I haven’t come across one yet. Let me know if you hear about any going on around the 21st-3rd!

“Mari, you must listen to me.” Leda gripped her daughter’s hand tightly. “Unless they find a way to escape, all Earth Walkers captured by the Companions go mad with despair and die early. You already know this.”

-page 170

So I’m not too far into this book, as I spent most of the weekend playing video games and didn’t read a bit. Hey, sometimes you need a break to go kill some ghouls on Witcher 3. Duh! However, so far this book is very interesting if a tad bit confusing. I’m not completely understanding the world building at this point, but it’s still veryyy early so I’m not real worried at this point. Fingers crossed it all begins to make sense soon!

Mari is an Earth Walker, heir to the unique healing powers of her Clan, but she has been forced to turn from her duties, until she is chosen by a special animal ally, altering her destiny forever. The Secret History by Donna Tartt

I’ll probably be able to finish up this book today (fingers crossed!), and so far it’s been very interesting. I like it so far, it’s fairly engrossing and fast paced. However, at this point I probably won’t be giving it the full 5 stars. Sometimes the prose comes across as trying too hard and pretentious, which is an instant way to annoy the heck out of me.

Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at an elite New England college discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries. But when they go beyond the boundaries of normal morality their lives are changed profoundly and forever, and they discover how hard it can be to truly live and how easy it is to kill.

I’m also currently reading my blogging bestie, Jill @ Rant and Rave About Books, new NA Romance novel, Corrupt MeIt’s going to be released in January, so you should all be on the lookout! It’s also currently available on NetGalley if you are interested in receiving an ARC for review!

Tome Topple Read-A-Thon Wrap-Up

Even though the Tome Topple Read-A-Thon doesn’t officially end until 11:59pm tonight, I thought I would go ahead and post my wrap-up for it. I know I won’t be finishing my book in time before it ends, so why not go ahead and face the inevitable – right?

If you would like to find out more about this read-a-thon, you can visit my original post HERE.

Books I Finished or Currently Reading

Unread = FAILURE

Okay, I know I did HORRIBLY with this read-a-thon. I mean, I really bit the big one this time. But, in my defense, I was a week late getting started on it due to finishing up 2 other books first. Also, I work from 9-5 every day because I’m a big girl and have to be an adult… BOOOOO! This whole adult thing really cuts into my reading time. I envy those of you still in school or don’t have to work!

Anyways, I’m hoping that there might be a holidays read-a-thon going on during the week of Christmas/New Year, because I’m taking my vacation that week and plan to do a shit ton of reading. So if you know of one – please let me know!

Did you participate in the Tome Topple Read-A-Thon? How much were you able to read? Did you make it through your entire TBR? Have you read any of the books that were on my list?

I only just started this book yesterday, but after the whirlwind ride of fun that was Queen of Shadows, I’ve got high hopes for this one! And yes, I know all about the mixed reviews and no, I’m not going to let it rob me of my anticipation. Just let me have this one moment of high hopes before they get bashed into the wall, along with my head.

Even though I know that I won’t make it to either of these in time for Tome Topple, I still plan to read these two hulking books next. I’m pretty excited for both, as I’ve heard great things about The Secret History and early reviews for Moon Chosen have been good, as well!

What are you currently reading?

I’m still currently making my way through Three Dark Crowns but I hope to finish it by tomorrow. The action is still pretty lacking at this point, but I am seeing a gradual build finally so I’m hoping that means I’m getting close! I wanna see some murder! Preferably Joseph’s, but I’ll take what I can get at this point.

I actually have yet to read any actual pages in Queen of Shadows, as I’m trying to finish up the other book first. I know that once I start, it’ll be incredibly hard to put down to read something else. My Tome Topple Read-A-Thon is slowly going down the drain. I’ll be lucky if I can finish even two books at the rate I’m going. For all of you younglings out there, never become an adult and get a real job because it totally cuts into your reading time.

What did you recently finish reading?

I really enjoyed The Diabolic. It was a fun and brutal read, with lots of murder and mayhem. However, there were lots of similarities to the Red Rising series that kept me from rating it higher. I mean, it’s tough to live up to one of my all time favorite books so it’s not really a big deal. I still highly recommend it to everyone!

I buddy read Wolf by Wolf with my one of my blogging partners in crime, Britt @ Geronimo Reads (go check out her awesome blog!). We both really enjoyed it, though we did have some issues with the main character, Yael. I do plan on reading the sequel and I hope that some of those issues are addressed. I wasn’t really sure if I was going to like this book when I first bought it, but I was pleasantly surprised. Yay for my first buddy read!

What do you think you’ll read next?

Once I finish Three Dark Crowns I will officially be able to dive into my Tome Topple TBR all the way. I plan to finish up the ToG series and then start on the new release P.C Cast novel. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because she wrote the House of Night vampire series. I used to love those books when I was in high school so I’m interested in seeing how her new book turns out. You can read all about my Tome Topple Read-A-Thon TBR here.
