April Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

Another month is gone… Y’all, summer is basically here and I’m not really sure I’m ready for it. I hate the heat unless I’m on a beach. But am I at the beach? No, I’m sitting at work and it blows.

But hey, at least there’s only 5 more months until the Halloween season! Am I right or am I right?!

Did you get a lot of reading done in April? Were you able to read all of the books on your TBR? Did you read any new favorites? What book did you like the least? What do you plan on reading in May?

Book Review: The Mirk and Midnight Hour

The Mirk and Midnight Hour by Jane Nickerson was an atmospheric historical fiction retelling of the Scottish ballad, Tam Lin. I had never heard of the ballad before, which I think really helped me to enjoy the story even more since I was going into it blind.

A Southern girl. A wounded soldier. A chilling force deep in the forest.
All collide at night’s darkest hour.

Seventeen-year-old Violet Dancey has been left at home in Mississippi with a laudanum-addicted stepmother and love-crazed stepsister while her father fights in the war—a war that has already claimed her twin brother.

When she comes across a severely injured Union soldier lying in an abandoned lodge deep in the woods, things begin to change. Thomas is the enemy—one of the men who might have killed her own brother—and yet she’s drawn to him. But Violet isn’t Thomas’s only visitor; someone has been tending to his wounds—keeping him alive—and it becomes chillingly clear that this care hasn’t been out of compassion.

Against the dangers of war and ominous powers of voodoo, Violet must fight to protect her home and the people she loves.

From the author of Strands of Bronze and Gold comes a haunting love story and suspenseful thriller based on the ancient fairy tale of “Tam Lin.”

The Good

  • Atmospheric Setting – I love a good setting that almost feels like a character in the story. Nickerson does such a wonderful job bringing an eerie and almost mystical quality to the Mississippi countryside where the story takes place. I felt myself becoming so interested every time that she would describe the setting of the woods and river where the farm is located. I never thought I’d catch myself saying that I’d want to live in Mississippi, but this had me really close to doing so!
  • Unique Retelling – I had never heard of the Scottish fairy tale, Tam Lin, so this was my first introduction to the story. I always love getting to know fairy tales that differ from the usual retellings of Cinderella, Snow White, etc. The story was very interesting mixing the original idea of faeries with the magic-wielding Africans. I thought that was really interesting, especially with the setting being in the South during the Civil War. I would never have thought to retell Tam Lin during the Civil War, bringing the conflict from that to this story.
  • My Favorite Little Seeley – While I enjoyed Violet as the main character, Seeley is really where my heart lies. I found him to be so precious and interesting. I wouldn’t mind a sequel focusing on him. He was so sweet and I loved how obsessed he was with adventure books. I thought the relationship he built with Violet was very adorable and you could tell how he looked up to her. While Violet was really strong and independent, Seeley was still a young boy who craved attention and for anyone’s love. He must be protected at all costs!!!!
  • Eccentric Side Characters – While Violet is a fun main character, the side characters are who really shined for me. Like the lovable Seeley, the other side characters were all eccentric and interesting. I loved the scary old neighbor, Violet’s new stepmother and stepsister, as well her handsome cousin, Dorian. I felt all of the side characters were fleshed out and each had their own distinctive personality.

The Bad

  • The Romance – While I always enjoy a good romance, I thought this one was just a little too easy. It happened so quickly and with not enough focus on the buildup. I would’ve preferred Nickerson to spend more time showing us the interactions between Violet and Thomas, rather than glossing over it in favor of focusing on random things happening on the farm. I really think there was a missed opportunity there to truly build a believable relationship between the two. Instead, we were basically given an insta-love situation.

Final Verdict: 4/5 Stars

Have you read the original Tam Lin story? Have you read The Mirk and Midnight Hour? If so, what are you thoughts on it? Which character was your favorite?

The Three W’s are:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

  • Jade City (The Green Bone Saga, #1) by Fonda Lee – physical book
  • The Paragon Hotel by Lyndsay Faye – audiobook

I’m sure y’all are tired of seeing Jade City continuing to be on my currently reading, but I promise it won’t be there next week! I’ve finally gotten rid of other physical reads so I can really focus on finishing this book. It’s really good and I’m nervous to see how this will end!

I just started listening to The Paragon Hotel today so I haven’t really formed much of an opinion on it yet. But I’m a sucker for historical fiction so I’m sure that I’ll end up really enjoying it.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Tithe (Modern Faerie Tales, #1) by Holly Black – physical book
  • The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James – audiobook
  • The Mirk and Midnight Hour by Jane Nickerson – physical book

I really enjoyed Tithe. It definitely felt like the dark faerie tales that Black is known for and was really easy to get into. I love how all of her novels are set within the same universe. I definitely plan to continue with this trilogy and I’m excited to see what will happen next. This was the perfect series to pick up while we wait for The Queen of Nothing.

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe didn’t quite work for me as much as it did for almost everyone else who read it. I found the big “plot twist” to be fairly cliche. I had already figured it out halfway through the story. I think I read too much science fiction so this one just didn’t live up to the hype for me. It didn’t help that I found the main character to be too whiny for my taste.

The Mirk and Midnight Hour was surprisingly much better than I expected, due to its mediocre rating on Goodreads. I had never read any retelling or even the original story of Tam Lin, so this was a totally unique story to me. I loved how atmospheric the setting was. It would have been a really good story to read during the Halloween season.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Lifel1k3 (Lifelike, #1) by Jay Kristoff – physical book
  • Middlemarch by George Eliot – physical book
  • Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1) by Robin LaFevers – audiobook

What are you currently reading?

  • The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James – audiobook
  • Jade City (The Green Bone Saga, #1) by Fonda Lee – physical book
  • The Mirk and Midnight Hour by Jane Nickerson – physical book

I will probably finish listening to The Loneliest Girl in the Universe today or tomorrow and am really enjoying it. It’s not super exciting but still engaging. This book is known for some sort of crazy plot-twist ending and I’m really excited to find out what it is. I really hope it’s not over-hyped…

I’m still enjoying Jade City! I’m about halfway through the story now and things have really started to pick up. I like that I’m taking my time with this book, as it’s allowing me to better absorb all of the different storylines that are taking place. I brought it with me to work today and can’t wait to read some during my lunch!

I started The Mirk and Midnight Hour the night before last and am almost 100 pages in already (without reading any yesterday!). I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this book going by the Goodreads reviews but I am absolutely enjoying it! I love the mystery elements in it and I find it to be a very atmospheric story. I’ve never read the original Scottish folktale, Tam Lin, that it’s based on so it’s helping to not ruin any of the storyline for me. I plan to read some more tonight and can’t wait to see what will happen next.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1) by Neal Shusterman – physical book, buddy read
  • The Lying Woods by Ashley Elston – audiobook

I really enjoyed The Lying Woods, solidifying the fact that Ashley Elston is one of the few YA contemporary/mystery writers that I like. I definitely recommend this book to anyone! I loved the mix of mystery and small town drama.

Okay, the hype was right… Scythe was awesome. I really loved it and I can’t wait to pick up the sequel, which I’ve heard is even better. I hope to write a review soon for this one but I’m having a bit of a writer’s block at the moment, so no promises. Sorry!

Honorable Mention: I started Rabbit & Robot the other night but only made it through about 30 pages before realizing it was soooo not the book for me. The writing was childish and I felt like the author was trying way too hard to be edgy by saying “fuck” at least once a paragraph. Dude, really?… DNFed it with no regrets.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Tithe (Modern Faerie Tales, #1) by Holly Black – physical book
  • The Paragon Hotel by Lyndsay Faye – audiobook
  • Lifel1k3 (Lifelike, #1) by Jay Kristoff – physical book

My April TBR

I didn’t get to all of the books I wanted to read in March, so there will be a bit of an overflow into this month’s TBR. But I think that’s alright, because I really want to get to these books soon rather than continue to push them aside until later. So yes, my TBR this month is once again a bit ambitious but I’m alright with it. Let’s kick some reading ass in April!

My TBR

  • Rabbit & Robot by Andrew Smith – physical ARC
  • Jade City (The Green Bone Saga, #1) by Fonda Lee – physical book
  • Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix (Rise of the Empress, #2) by Julie C. Dao – audiobook, currently listening
  • The Mirk and Midnight Hour by Jane Nickerson – physical book
  • The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough – physical book
  • Navigating the Stars (Sentinels of the Galaxy, #1) by Maria V. Snyder – audiobook
  • And I Darken (The Conqueror’s Saga, #1) by Kiersten White – physical book, currently buddy reading
  • Tithe (Modern Faerie Tales, #1) by Holly Black – physical book
  • Lifel1k3 (Lifelike, #1) by Jay Kristoff
  • The English Wife by Lauren Willig – physical book, currently reading
  • Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1) by Neal Shusterman – physical book, buddy read
  • The Lying Woods by Ashley Elston – audiobook

This may look like a really extensive TBR, but with 3 of these being audiobooks which I can speed through pretty quickly, I’m not too worried about it. I think I have a really good mix of genres as well this month which will help me from getting too bored as well. I think I was actually starting to get burned out on fantasy last month, so this mix should help fix that problem somewhat.

What do you plan to read during April? Do you have a set TBR or are you a mood reader? Have you read any of the books on my list? If so, what did you think about them?
