TOPIC OF THE WEEK: BOTM Review!

Ever since I first heard about this book, I was really excited to pick it up. Then when it started building up more and more hype, I started to get a little worried that maybe this would turn into all marketing and no substance. Luckily, I was wrong! I actually did enjoy Dhonielle Clayton’s The Belles (The Belles, #1).

Camellia Beauregard is a Belle. In the opulent world of Orléans, Belles are revered, for they control Beauty, and Beauty is a commodity coveted above all else. In Orléans, the people are born gray, they are born damned, and only with the help of a Belle and her talents can they transform and be made beautiful.

But it’s not enough for Camellia to be just a Belle. She wants to be the favorite—the Belle chosen by the Queen of Orléans to live in the royal palace, to tend to the royal family and their court, to be recognized as the most talented Belle in the land. But once Camellia and her Belle sisters arrive at court, it becomes clear that being the favorite is not everything she always dreamed it would be. Behind the gilded palace walls live dark secrets, and Camellia soon learns that the very essence of her existence is a lie—that her powers are far greater, and could be more dangerous, than she ever imagined. And when the queen asks Camellia to risk her own life and help the ailing princess by using Belle powers in unintended ways, Camellia now faces an impossible decision.

With the future of Orléans and its people at stake, Camellia must decide—save herself and her sisters and the way of the Belles—or resuscitate the princess, risk her own life, and change the ways of her world forever.

The Good

  • Lush World – Okay, Clayton seriously created the most luscious world that I’ve read about in a long time. Everything was described so vividly and beautifully, that I truly felt like I could picture it all down to the very smallest detail. It was basically if you took the atmosphere and party mentality of New Orleans (obviously) and mixed it with the decadence of 18th century Versailles. You won’t want to read this book on an empty stomach, trust me!
  • Great Use of Suspense – I find that a lot of books won’t even begin to tease the source of conflict or mystery until you’re almost halfway through the book. They prefer to really build up the world or characters first instead. However, that wasn’t the case in The Belles and I LOVED it. The story barely gets started and you’re immediately teased with a mystery and it only grows from there. If you’re like me and enjoy to immediately be tossed into the conflict, then you’ll really like this book. There ain’t no waitin’ around in this one! 😉
  • Fantastic Plot – From beginning until end, I was completely engrossed in this story. In the beginning, I was afraid that this would end up centering around girl drama which was really disappointing. However, that ended quickly and the story dived deeper into political intrigue and mystery. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to find out what was going to happen next. There were twists and turns from start to finish that left me begging for more. And that ending?! Talk about a cliffhanger that leaves you dying for the next book!

celebrate allkinds of love

The Bad

  • Flat Characters – I would say that my biggest disappointment with this story was that most of the characters were lacking in any depth, including Camille. They were all fairly cliche and one dimensional. I would’ve liked to see a bit more fight or inner turmoil from Camille, but instead she seemed to meek and naive for me. She wouldn’t fight back just because she wanted to make everyone happy and I didn’t really connect with her because of that. I also felt that all of the side characters lacked any depth as well, except I did like the bit of mystery that surrounded Auguste. I’m hoping that Clayton fleshes out all of these characters a bit more in the next book and shows some growth with Camille.

Overall, this was a really fun read. I thought the storyline was fascinating and I absolutely fell in love with the world or Orleans. I honestly cannot wait to find out what happens next! However, I do think there could be some improvement character-wise and I hope that’s something that’s explored and fixed in the sequel. I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a book that they can just wholly escape into!

Final Verdict: 4/5 Stars

TOPIC OF THE WEEK: That’s A Wrap!.. Choose a book to adapt into a movie/tv show and cast the main characters.

 Book Choice: Red Rising

image

Fitchner – David Harbour

You know that you can’t disagree with him being the perfect person to pull of the drunk and grumpy mentor! I mean, he’s already played that part perfectly in Stranger Things.

MV5BMTU0NDM5OTE0N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzMzNjM0Nw@@._V1_UY317_CR21,0,214,317_AL_

Jenna Malone – Antonia

Yes, Jenna is a little on the older side for this character but I swear she hasn’t aged a bit and could definitely pull off an 18 year old bitch.

MV5BNjE5MzAzNzUwOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNDM0OTg0ODE@._V1_UY317_CR17,0,214,317_AL_

The Jackal – Bill Skarsgard

Okay, I’m kind of obsessed with Bill and while it hurts me to cast him as such a terrible person, there’s just no way better to be able to handle the kind of intensity that the Jackal has.

sophie-turner

Eo – Sophie Turner

She just has this kind of softness to her that I think would fit perfectly with Eo.

Max_Irons_actor

Roque – Max Irons

Max just has that brooding poet look that is Roque to the very core. He also shares that same silent intensity that I think would work really well.

6a14ac215935c193ca24101b03151820--alexander-ludwig-photo-and-video

Titus – Alexander Ludwig

I honestly thought about casting him as Darrow but he’s just such a big guy, that he is almost too perfect as Titus. If you watch Vikings then you’ll know what I mean.

liam_hemsworth

Darrow – Liam Hemsworth

That’s right, I went there! Honestly, he has the look of Darrow and has that kind of tortured brooding look that I think would work well for Darrow. I also think that it’s time that he steps up into a more demanding role.

beauty-2013-03-Saoirse-Ronan-smoky-eyes-eyeliner-makeup-main.jpg

Mustang – Saoirse Ronan

Okay, this was probably the hardest character to cast but once I realized that Mustang isn’t a fighter but a strategist and politician, I knew that Saoirse would be able to portray her perfectly.

124462026-352-k543888

Sevro – Taron Egerton

If you’ve seen Kingsman, then you’ll know that Taron can definitely pull off the craziness that is Sevro. He’d just be really good at bringing in that extra bit of comedy to the character. He’s also on the smaller side, which is a really big part of Sevro’s character.

tn-500_02-jeremyirvine

Cassius – Jeremy Irvine

Cassius is supposed to be a fun pretty boy, but also one that is serious about loyalty and doing what he believes is the right thing. I think Jeremy could really pull off both of those sides.

I cannot tell you how hard it was to try and cast this book. Seriously, I spent over two hours trying to find the perfect actors to portray these amazing and iconic characters.

TOPIC OF THE WEEK:  Not My Style… What are some books that everyone seems to enjoy but you don’t?

25812109

The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis

I mean, this book was alright. I thought the ending was well done and the overall theme was great… but the story itself just wasn’t anything special. In fact, it was kind of boring. Like wasn’t there supposed to be some big mystery? Yeah, there wasn’t. I think the problem might’ve been that this book was marketed as a thriller type book and it’s not.

19547856

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Don’t get me wrong, I really think the overall story in this book is really cute! However, I will continue to back my claim that Leah is an awful friend. All she did was sulk and whine throughout the whole book because she thinks that everyone likes Abby better, including Simon. Honestly, I wouldn’t be friends with someone like that.

18806240

Bone Gap by Laura Ruby

This was supposed to be a magical realism retelling of the story of Persephone but… I honestly don’t know what the hell was even going on. This book is the perfect example of when magical realism takes a ride on the nonsense train and never looks back. It just goes to show why I am very picky when it comes to that genre.

34019862

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns (Rise of the Empress, #1) by Julie C. Dao

If you’re going to write a book about an antihero/villain, at least give them a compelling reason for the reasoning behind their actions.

Furthermore (Furthermore, #1) by Tahereh Mafi

This book was just kind of.. boring. I was expecting it to be full of adventure and whimsy, but I actually struggled a bit with making myself want to pick it up.

Victra au Julii from the Red Rising Series by Pierce Brown

Everyone seems to love Mustang in this series and while I do love me some Mustang, me and Victra are basically the same person. We’re brutally honest, short-tempered, and have a strange sense of humor. We can also be real bitches when we try. (Hey, at least I can admit that about myself!) But seriously, Victra is the most underrated character in this series.

Cath

Cath from Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Me and Cath just like our alone time. We’re okay with holding up in our room all of the time and basically ignoring the rest of the world. We’re introverts, can you blame us?! We don’t crave human contact 24/7 and definitely need time to recharge. I mean, I probably get out a lot more than she does (I do have a full time job that requires constant interaction with others), but don’t think that I don’t immediately run to my room as soon as I get home to relax with my current read.

If you haven’t already noticed, I’m such an INTJ that it’s not even funny. An INTJ Aquarius… there was never any hope that I was going to be anything but weird. 🙂

Fawkes by Nadine Brandes

Thomas Fawkes is turning to stone, and the only cure to the Stone Plague is to join his father’s plot to assassinate the king of England.
Silent wars leave the most carnage. The wars that are never declared, but are carried out in dark alleys with masks and hidden knives. Wars where color power alters the natural rhythm of 17th century London. And when the king calls for peace, no one listens until he finally calls for death.
But what if death finds him first?
Keepers think the Igniters caused the plague. Igniters think the Keepers did it. But all Thomas knows is that the Stone Plague infecting his eye is spreading. And if he doesn’t do something soon, he’ll be a lifeless statue. So when his Keeper father, Guy Fawkes, invites him to join the Gunpowder Plot—claiming it will put an end to the plague—Thomas is in.
The plan: use 36 barrels of gunpowder to blow up the Igniter King.
The problem: Doing so will destroy the family of the girl Thomas loves. But backing out of the plot will send his father and the other plotters to the gallows. To save one, Thomas will lose the other.
No matter Thomas’s choice, one thing is clear: once the decision is made and the color masks have been put on, there’s no turning back.

The Price Guide to the Occult by Leslye Walton

The Blackburn women are cursed. Ever since the extraordinary witch Rona Blackburn landed on Anathema Island centuries ago and was shunned by the eight “original” settlers, Blackburn witches have been doomed to carry out a brief whirlwind affair with a descendant of the Original Eight. The vengeful curse, however, had unintended side effects: it diluted the Blackburns’ supernatural powers. That’s perfectly all right with seventeen-year-old Nor Blackburn. All she wants is a quiet, unremarkable life—her powers are blissfully unexceptional, her love life pretty much nonexistent. Nor hopes the curse has played itself out through enough generations that she’ll finally be spared the drama. But when a mysterious book comes out promising to cast any spell for the right price, Nor senses a dark storm headed straight for Anathema—and straight for her.
In her second novel, Leslye Walton spins a dark, mesmerizing tale of a girl stumbling along the path toward self-acceptance and first love, even as the Price Guide’s malevolent author—Nor’s own mother—looms and threatens to strangle any hope for happiness.

There can only be one…or can there?

The Mermaid by Christina Henry

Once there was a mermaid who longed to know of more than her ocean home and her people. One day a fisherman trapped her in his net but couldn’t bear to keep her. But his eyes were lonely and caught her more surely than the net, and so she evoked a magic that allowed her to walk upon the shore. The mermaid, Amelia, became his wife, and they lived on a cliff above the ocean for ever so many years, until one day the fisherman rowed out to sea and did not return.
P. T. Barnum was looking for marvelous attractions for his American Museum, and he’d heard a rumor of a mermaid who lived on a cliff by the sea. He wanted to make his fortune, and an attraction like Amelia was just the ticket.

Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl

Beatrice Hartley has no plans for the summer—except a secret reunion with her five former best friends.
Once upon a time, back at Darrow-Harker School, they were the cool kids, the beautiful ones. Then the shocking death of Jim—their creative genius—changed everything.
One year after graduation, Beatrice is returning to Wincroft—the seaside estate where they spent so many nights sharing secrets, crushes, plans to change the world—in the hopes that she will get to the bottom of the dark questions gnawing at her about Jim’s death. She suspects that her friends knew much more than they ever let on.
But as the night plays out in a haze of stilted jokes and unfathomable silence, answers seem unlikely. Her friends are all so different now, so splintered and lost. It’s too late. Beatrice senses she’s going to live the rest of her life far away from them, never knowing what really happened.
Then night fades to morning. A thunderstorm rages, and a mysterious man knocks on the door. He looks like the exhausted ringmaster of a cheap traveling circus. Blithely, he announces the impossible.
And so begins the Neverworld Wake. The nightmare. The nothingness.

Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy meets Eurovision in an over-the-top science fiction spectacle from bestselling author Catherynne M. Valente, in which sentient species compete for glory in a galactic musical contest—where the stakes are as high as the fate of planet Earth.
A century ago, the Sentience Wars tore the galaxy apart and nearly ended the entire concept of intelligent space-faring life. In the aftermath, a curious tradition was invented—something to cheer up everyone who was left and bring the shattered worlds together in the spirit of peace, unity, and understanding.
Once every cycle, the civilizations gather for the Metagalactic Grand Prix—part gladiatorial contest, part beauty pageant, part concert extravaganza, and part continuation of the wars of the past. Instead of competing in orbital combat, the powerful species that survived face off in a competition of song, dance, or whatever can be physically performed in an intergalactic talent show. The stakes are high for this new game, and everyone is forced to compete.
This year, though, humankind has discovered the enormous universe. And while they expected to discover a grand drama of diplomacy, gunships, wormholes, and stoic councils of aliens, they have instead found glitter, lipstick, and electric guitars. Mankind will not get to fight for its destiny—they must sing.
A band of human musicians, dancers, and roadies have been chosen to represent Earth on the greatest stage in the galaxy. And the fate of their species lies in their ability to rock.

January 5th – New Year’s Resolution… What are some of your reading/blogging/life/etc. goals for this year?

January 12th – You Complete Me… Who are some blogging/reading friends that have had an impact on you, inspire you, or you just really appreciate their friendship?

New Year’s Resolution

Reading

  • Complete/catch up on series that I’ve already started – I did a little bit better about this in 2017, but I really want to focus on it this year. I’m in the middle of quite a few series that I really need to complete. Luckily, my TBR for this month includes a few of those already so I think I’m starting off pretty good so far!
  • Tackle the larger books on my TBR – This past year I was really bad about putting off some of my larger books in order to meet my Goodreads reading challenge (which I didn’t, BTW) and I hated that. I used to never let myself be intimidated by larger books, no matter how long it would take me to finish them. Well this year, I’ve lowered my Goodreads goal to a more manageable number and I plan to pick up some of those bad boys! **flexes ridiculously awesome biceps**
  • Read what I want to – Since I’ve started this blog, I’ve kind of put aside some of my adult or literary fiction in favor of YA or whatever books are more popular. What the hell is wrong with me?! I love to read any and everything, always have. I ended the year reading more of my literary fiction and in 2018 I’ll be going to back to doing just that.
  • Read more books that I already own – I really need to focus on cleaning up some of the older books that I have on my physical TBR. I know there’s quite a few that have been sitting on my shelf since I first started blogging two years ago. Time to finally pick those babies up!

Blogging

  • Write more discussion posts – Seriously, everyone seems to enjoy them and they’re always fun to write. I have a few ideas already brewing in my head, so expect some soon!
  • Plan ahead!!! – I’m a terrible procrastinator and so my goal this year is to have more posts scheduled ahead of time. Life is just so much easier when you plan ahead!
  • Blog hop more – Please leave links to some of your favorite bloggers, posts, booktubers, etc. I want to find some new favorite bloggers!

Life

  • Stay positive – I can get fairly moody sometimes when I find myself in a rut at work. My goal this year is to not let myself get that way and stay positive. Smile, y’all!
  • Say yes – I’ve become such a shut in the past couple of years while I live at home and work. The majority of my friends are all married off and living in different places and so I’m basically stuck here with nothing to do. When I do get invited to do stuff, I’ve been no to blow it off because I’ve become such a homebody since I’m tired of working 8-5 through the week. NO MORE!!!
  • Pay off my credit cards – Yep.. I really need to do that.

You Complete Me

I have met so many incredible people through blogging these past couple of years that there are just too many to list every single one of them. I’ll just name a few that I consider good friends, have influenced me, or inspired me. However, every single one of you are amazing, wonderful and beautiful. I love you all!

  • Britt @ Geronimo Reads – Seriously, this girl is my bestie. If you follow either of us on Twitter, you’ll see some really interesting back and forths between us. Just know that that’s only the shallowest part of our relationship, hahahaha. But really, I don’t know what I’d do without this girl. She’s funny, supportive, and is basically the yin to my yang. I hate her so much…. hahahaha! 😉
  • Lilly @ Lair of Books – I’ve really gotten to know Lilly this past year and there’s seriously no one is sweeter than she is. She has one of my favorite blogs that y’all seriously need to check out if you haven’t. I love how we have practically the same taste in books. I always look forward to our conversations discussing what books we are choosing for Book of the Month Club. She’s also usually the one causing me to always throw my money at new books because I swear I have to buy every book that she reviews, haha.
  • Regan @ PeruseProject – I don’t know Regan personally, but I absolutely love her booktube channel. We have the same taste in books and I know that anything she recommends, I’ll end up loving. I also really enjoy how she doesn’t just read YA or whatever’s popular, but tends to pick up other genres like literary fiction and middle grade as well. She’s really good about digging up lesser known gems that I have to immediately add to my TBR. I also appreciate that her channel doesn’t rely on gimmicks or silliness, but is just straight book talk without the childish nonsense that you get from some other ones.
  • Sam @ Thoughts on Tomes – Another booktuber that I always enjoy watching. I love that Sam focuses mostly on science fiction and fantasy, especially adult. I’m always on the lookout for some really good adult fantasy and science fiction and she definitely doesn’t disappoint with great recommendations. I also love how doesn’t mince her words – when she hates something, she hates it. Haha!

TOPIC OF THE WEEK: BOTM Review

You know that feeling of amazement when you pick up a book and become so completely engrossed in its world? Well, that’s exactly how I felt while reading Zodiac (Zodiac, #1) by Romina Russell.

At the dawn of time, there were 13 Houses in the Zodiac Galaxy. Now only 12 remain….

Rhoma Grace is a 16-year-old student from House Cancer with an unusual way of reading the stars. While her classmates use measurements to make accurate astrological predictions, Rho can’t solve for ‘x’ to save her life—so instead, she looks up at the night sky and makes up stories.

When a violent blast strikes the moons of Cancer, sending its ocean planet off-kilter and killing thousands of citizens—including its beloved Guardian—Rho is more surprised than anyone when she is named the House’s new leader. But, a true Cancerian who loves her home fiercely and will protect her people no matter what, Rho accepts.

Then, when more Houses fall victim to freak weather catastrophes, Rho starts seeing a pattern in the stars. She suspects Ophiuchus—the exiled 13th Guardian of Zodiac legend—has returned to exact his revenge across the Galaxy. Now Rho—along with Hysan Dax, a young envoy from House Libra, and Mathias, her guide and a member of her Royal Guard—must travel through the Zodiac to warn the other Guardians.

But who will believe anything this young novice says? Whom can Rho trust in a universe defined by differences? And how can she convince twelve worlds to unite as one Zodiac?

The Good

  • AMAZINGGGG World-Building – Seriously, I cannot stop being blown away by how insane Russell’s ability to create this world is. Everything is so well laid out and explained. It’s incredibly intricate and detailed, with just enough background information to give you some history without overdoing it. Seriously, I can’t wait to explore more of this galaxy!
  • Imperfect MC – While Rho may be considered a “special snowflake” because of her abilities, I really appreciated that Russell constantly challenged that notion. All of the decisions Rho makes have serious repercussions, which raises the stakes even more. It was nice to see that she wasn’t making the right choice every single time, but mostly failing because she’s still only a teenager and doesn’t really know as much as she thinks she does.
  • Fast-Paced Plot – I can promise that this story won’t bore you. The action starts in the very first chapter and doesn’t stop until the very end. I didn’t want to put the book down because there was something constantly happening.
  • HYSAN!!! – Cocky, sassy, and smart? Yes, this is a love interest that I can definitely get behind!

She remembered thinking falling for him would be like falling in love with darkness, but now she imagined he was more like a starry night_ the constellations were always there, constant, magnificent against the eve.png

The Bad

  • Silly Love Triangle – Now, I am one of those weirdos who actually enjoys love triangles (come at me, bro!), but the love triangle in this story just didn’t work for me. Is it because I’m not really a fan of Mathias? Possibly. But seriously, if you’re going to write a love triangle then you need to write chemistry between the MC and both love interests, not just one.

Overall, this is a really fun read that I flew through. I plan to pick up the sequel in January because I can’t wait to see where the story goes next! Also, I definitely head cannon Hysan as bisexual. I don’t care what anyone else thinks! 😉

Final Verdict: 4/5 Stars

TOPIC OF THE WEEK: Crash and Burn… What were some of your most disappointing reads of 2017?

This list doesn’t only include books that I didn’t enjoy, but also ones that might just not have lived up to my expectations. Sometimes I fall prey to the hype which can lead to a few letdowns.

20345202

The Girl at Midnight (The Girl at Midnight, #1) by Melissa Grey

I didn’t necessarily dislike this story, it just was just bit unoriginal. I had really high hope for this story based on the summary but it ended up just being a bit of a mash-up of other popular YA novels. However, I do plan on finishing the trilogy because it was an entertaining read.

34019862

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns (Rise of the Empress, #1) by Julie C. Dao

I was extremely excited about this book. The synopsis had me hooked, because who doesn’t want an Asian inspired retelling of the Evil Queen fairytale?! Well, disappointing is an understatement. If you’re going to write a good antihero/villain story, you must make me still care about that character and root for them to be happy. However, there is no redeeming qualities about Xifeng. I HATED HER. You can read my full review HERE.

19547856

Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

I almost feel like I read a different book than everyone else because it’s such a beloved story. However, I found this to be a mediocre at best. I really liked Simon as a character and the romance is cute, but everything else? Not my favorite. I actually really hated Leah as a character and now she’s getting her own novel?! Ughhhhh…. I found her to be such a bitch! Am I seriously the only one who didn’t like her at all?

31915219

A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge

I loved Hardinge’s other novel, The Lie Tree, so I was really excited to pick this one up. However, it was just really long and a bit confusing at times. It seriously might be the strangest book that I’ve ever come across. I did listen to the audiobook version and that was probably part of the problem. I think this story is better off being read rather than listened to.

18806240

Bone Gap by Laura Ruby

Don’t ask me what this book was even about because I have no idea. I think it was supposed to be like a magical realism retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth, but it wasn’t anything like it. It was just strange and nonsensical. I think I just need to accept that I have a very love/hate relationship with magical realism in general (but Emily Henry is queen!).

30555488

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

Another book that I wasn’t able to enjoy due to the characters. You’re never given enough time to really develop any sort of relationship with them, as the story jumps around too much. I ended up not really caring what happened to them, even the main character. I was expecting so much from this one too.

23174274

Glass Sword (Red Queen, #2) by Victoria Aveyard

Ughhhh, this sequel was disappointing. I don’t know why authors think they need to turn protagonists into brooding and bitchy I-have-to-do-everything-by-myself-because-no-one-understands-me types in sequels but it’s annoying. Seriously, writers just need to stop it already. You can read my full review HERE.

Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi

I was soooo excited for this book when it was first announced. Maybe I let the hype get to me too much, because it was actually kind of boring. Yes, it was whimsical but the overall plot was pretty meh. I also really didn’t like the ending. It was wrapped up way too quickly and didn’t make a whole lot of sense. I’m hoping for better from Whichwood.

29939390

Windwitch (The Witchlands, #2) by Susan Dennard

This book suffered from trying to do wayyyy too much. Instead of keeping the POVs simple and the same as Truthwitch, Dennard decided to add even more and most of them were completely pointless and unneeded. Let’s not even the mention that everyone is all split up and so we’ve already lost the magic of their relationships from the previous book.

18044277

The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma

Another magical realism book that just didn’t do anything for me. It was strange and confusing, not to mention really depressing. I just hate it when books don’t live up their gorgeous covers.
