September Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

Y’all, I am happy to announce that I was finally able to bust through my reading slump in September! I’m so glad I was able to pick up some books that were able to pull me out of my slump and get back to truly enjoying reading. I may not be hitting double digits quite yet, but I’m still proud of the progress that I’m making. If you’re like me and struggle with reading slumps from time to time, I recommend a good binge of a sitcom or newly released show (my current go-to’s are The Mindy Project, New Girl, and The Boys). I also recommend trying a book outside of your normal genre! But with that being said, I see myself finishing out the rest of year really strong and am excited for the books I have on my October TBR!

What are you currently reading?

  • Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown – audiobook
  • The Trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor, #1) by Jessica Townsend – physical book
  • The Gallery by Laura Marx-Fitzgerald – physical book
  • Romanov by Nadine Brandes – audiobook, buddy read

I have decided to take off the books that I’m only reading a few pages here and there, to focus only on the books that I’m actively reading. So no more updates on Surprise, Kill, Vanish and Middlemarch until I get back to reading them full time…

Okay, I’m about halfway through The Trials of Morrigan Crow and y’all.. I AM OBSESSED. This book is the most whimsical story that I think I’ve ever read. It’s fun and engaging, and has made me laugh aloud so many times. Morrigan is truly a delight. I feel quite confident in saying this is kind of like a modern day Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I’ve only made a little progress in Iron Gold and will probably continue to be slow going for a bit, as I will also be listening to Romanov starting today for a buddy read with my friend, Britt. I also left Nevermoor at work yesterday and so I picked up The Gallery to satisfy my little reading itch last night after seeing Downton Abbey at the movies. Even though I only read a chapter of it, I found it super intriguing and can’t wait to really dive into it.

Heart of Iron (Heart of Iron, #1) by Ashley Poston – REVIEW

I really enjoyed this book. I saw it where got mixed reviews from people but it worked for me personally. It was fun and kept my attention the entire time, which is what I find to be most important in a book. It cured my reading slump and that’s all that matters.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Walled City by Ryan Graudin – physical book
  • Sanctuary by V.V. James – physical book
  • The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw – physical book

Book Review: Heart of Iron (Heart of Iron, #1)

As soon as I heard this book was being labeled as Anastasia-meets-Firefly, I knew that I had to pick it up. And I’m so glad I did. Ashley Poston’s Heart of Iron (Heart of Iron, #1) was just the right amount of fun that will always keep my attention.

Seventeen-year-old Ana is a scoundrel by nurture and an outlaw by nature. Found as a child drifting through space with a sentient android called D09, Ana was saved by a fearsome space captain and the grizzled crew she now calls family. But D09—one of the last remaining illegal Metals—has been glitching, and Ana will stop at nothing to find a way to fix him.

Ana’s desperate effort to save D09 leads her on a quest to steal the coordinates to a lost ship that could offer all the answers. But at the last moment, a spoiled Ironblood boy beats Ana to her prize. He has his own reasons for taking the coordinates, and he doesn’t care what he’ll sacrifice to keep them.

When everything goes wrong, she and the Ironblood end up as fugitives on the run. Now their entire kingdom is after them—and the coordinates—and not everyone wants them captured alive.

What they find in a lost corner of the universe will change all their lives—and unearth dangerous secrets. But when a darkness from Ana’s past returns, she must face an impossible choice: does she protect a kingdom that wants her dead or save the Metal boy she loves?

I really appreciated that the pacing of this book started off with a bang and never really slowed down. It kept my attention from start to finish. I have been struggling to want to read over the past couple of months, but this book helped get me back on a roll. I was even reading this instead of watching the football game… THAT NEVER HAPPENS. Poston’s writing is super engaging while being fairly straighforward, so don’t worry about it being either super flowery or technical. I know some people have a hard time reading science fiction due to the terms used, but this book isn’t bogged down by any crazy jargon. I never struggled to understand and visualize what she was writing about.

I really enjoyed each of the POVs that we get throughout this book. Ana is very independent and always getting into trouble. She isn’t afraid to face challenges head-on and I really liked that about her. Unfortunately, she’s always getting her android friend, D09, involved as well. D09 was probably my favorite character. I’m always partial to robot characters, as they tend to provide so much humor (see R2D2 & C3PO). It was also interesting to see how his personal story developed throughout the book. Then we had Robb, an Ironblood who carries some family baggage, and Jaxx, a Solani with a secret. These two are just too precious for words. I loved the back-and-forth banter and chemistry between them. All I want is for them to end up happy. And if I don’t get that, I will not be a very happy camper, lemme tell ya.

A moment of silence for.png

I didn’t really have any major issues with this book. The only thing that I wouldn’t have minded was if the romance didn’t take such a prominent place in the story. I love romance in my books, but I think both of the relationships would have benefited from a bit more buildup. But it was still fun and engaging, which are the things that I value most in a good book. Now, I don’t think this book will win any prestigious awards but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still appreciate it for what it is. I thought it was a fun twist on the story of Anastasia, without fully recreating it from start to finish. I like that there is enough originality to the story that what you will only be able to guess one small piece of the mystery.

If you’re looking for a good light and fluffy story, then I think Heart of Iron fits the bill perfectly. It was a good book to pull me out of my really long reading slump and I will forever be indebted to it for that, haha. But seriously, I do recommend this one if you’re not in the mood for anything to serious but just want to pick up book that will keep you invested until the end.

Final Verdict: 4/5 Stars

Have you read Heart of Iron? If so, what did you think of it? Which POV was your favorite to read? Do you enjoy reading retellings?

  • Middlemarch by George Eliot – physical book
  • Heart of Iron (Heart of Iron, #1) by Ashley Poston – physical book
  • Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown – audiobook

I have only read the first chapter so far in Heart of Iron, so I don’t have too much of an opinion yet. However, I’m enjoying the writing style so far and I think this could be an easy to devour story… but we shall see!

I just started Iron Gold as well, so I’m only about 10 mins into that story. I know I’ve mentioned this multiple times so far, but I really have enjoyed my decision to reread this series as an audiobook before diving into the latest release, Dark Age. Pierce Brown is just such an amazing author. I’m actually really excited for when he breaks away from the Red Rising world and into a completely new story.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Morning Star (Red Rising, #3) by Pierce Brown – audiobook, reread
  • The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson – physical book, Book Review

I ended up in love with The Summer Before the War. I really enjoyed the small village setting, the eccentric characters, and the relationships between them all. This has made me want to read anything and everything by Helen Simonson, so I plan to dive into her backlist soon. I really recommend this story to fans of Downton Abbey, so if that’s you then I hope you decide to pick up this book!

Surprisingly enough, I think I enjoyed Morning Star even more this second time around than I did the first time I read it. Before now, I had always said Golden Son was my favorite in the series, but this reread has me debating on changing that original opinion. If you haven’t tried listening to this series as an audiobook, I highly recommend it. The narrator is fantastic!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor, #1) by Jessica Townsend – physical book
  • The Last Magician (The Last Magician, #1) by Lisa Maxwell – physical book

After a slow start to picking up the book, I am finally making some progress in The Summer Before the War. Y’all, I think this may become a new favorite novel. I love the writing style and all of the characters are so interesting. I can’t wait to see how this story will unfold.

I also put aside the podcasts yesterday and finally made some more progress in Morning Star. Things are really about to start getting interesting in that story. I can’t believe how much I’ve actually forgotten in this book.

No further progress in my non-fiction and classic books. I’m hoping to set aside some time this week to read a few chapters in each.

My Book Outlet & Audible Book Haul

I recently found out about Audible’s return policy, where you can return any book for whatever reason and receive the credit back for it. Well….. I took advantage of that almost immediately. I had a few audiobooks that I didn’t like enough to ever want to listen to again and a couple that I wasn’t even able to finish. So I decided to exchange those for some new ones and wanted to share them with y’all.

Book Outlet also had a site-wide sale during the last week of March. Everything on the site was 30% off and I just couldn’t let such a good deal pass me by. I was able to grab 8 hardback books for less than $50! Yes, Book Outlet is the best and I will always stand behind that fact. If you live in Canada or the U.S., I totally recommend ordering from them! You won’t regret saving so much money!

The Paragon Hotel by Lyndsay Faye

The year is 1921, and “Nobody” Alice James is on a cross-country train, carrying a bullet wound and fleeing for her life following an illicit drug and liquor deal gone horribly wrong. Desperate to get as far away as possible from New York City and those who want her dead, she has her sights set on Oregon: a distant frontier that seems the end of the line.

She befriends Max, a black Pullman porter who reminds her achingly of Harlem, who leads Alice to the Paragon Hotel upon arrival in Portland. Her unlikely sanctuary turns out to be the only all-black hotel in the city, and its lodgers seem unduly terrified of a white woman on the premises. But as she meets the churlish Dr. Pendleton, the stately Mavereen, and the unforgettable club chanteuse Blossom Fontaine, she begins to understand the reason for their dread. The Ku Klux Klan has arrived in Portland in fearful numbers–burning crosses, inciting violence, electing officials, and brutalizing blacks. And only Alice, along with her new “family” of Paragon residents, are willing to search for a missing mulatto child who has mysteriously vanished into the Oregon woods.

Why was “Nobody” Alice James forced to escape Harlem? Why do the Paragon’s denizens live in fear–and what other sins are they hiding? Where did the orphaned child who went missing from the hotel, Davy Lee, come from in the first place? And, perhaps most important, why does Blossom DuBois seem to be at the very center of this tangled web?

The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough

The Thorn Birds is a robust, romantic saga of a singular family, the Clearys. It begins in the early part of this century, when Paddy Cleary moves his wife, Fiona, and their seven children to Drogheda, the vast Australian sheep station owned by his autocratic and childless older sister; and it ends more than half a century later, when the only survivor of the third generation, the brilliant actress Justine O’Neill, sets a course of life and love halfway around the world from her roots.

The central figures in this enthralling story are the indomitable Meggie, the only Cleary daughter, and the one man she truly loves, the stunningly handsome and ambitious priest Ralph de Bricassart. Ralph’s course moves him a long way indeed, from a remote Outback parish to the halls of the Vatican; and Meggie’s except for a brief and miserable marriage elsewhere, is fixed to the Drogheda that is part of her bones – but distance does not dim their feelings though it shapes their lives.

Wonderful characters people this book; strong and gentle, Paddy, hiding a private memory; dutiful Fiona, holding back love because it once betrayed her, violent, tormented Frank, and the other hardworking Cleary sons who give the boundless lands of Drogheda the energy and devotion most men save for women; Meggie; Ralph; and Meggie’s children, Justine and Dane. And the land itself; stark, relentless in its demands, brilliant in its flowering, prey to gigantic cycles of drought and flood, rich when nature is bountiful, surreal like no other place on earth.

New York City, 1899. Clara Stole, the mayor’s ever-proper daughter, leads a double life. Since her mother’s murder, she has secretly trained in self-defense with the mysterious Drosselmeyer.

Then, on Christmas Eve, disaster strikes.

Her home is destroyed, her father abducted—by beings distinctly not human. To find him, Clara journeys to the war-ravaged land of Cane. Her only companion is the dethroned prince Nicholas, bound by a wicked curse. If they’re to survive, Clara has no choice but to trust him, but his haunted eyes burn with secrets—and a need she can’t define. With the dangerous, seductive faery queen Anise hunting them, Clara soon realizes she won’t leave Cane unscathed—if she leaves at all.

Inspired by The NutcrackerWinterspell is a dark, timeless fairy tale about love and war, longing and loneliness, and a girl who must learn to live without fear.
