Review: Half Wild (The Half Bad Trilogy, #2)

Alright, alright, I’ll be honest – I started reading Half Wild (The Half Bad Trilogy, #3) by Sally Green, without remembering basically anything that happened in the first book. What a way to start a book, am I right? I just love to make things difficult for myself. Good thing it didn’t take me TOO long to get reacquainted! Guess what I also just realized… I never wrote a review for the first one. Ugh, this is how I know I’m getting old.

“You will have a powerful Gift, but it’s how you use it that will show you to be good or bad.”

In a modern-day England where two warring factions of witches live amongst humans, seventeen-year-old Nathan is an abomination, the illegitimate son of the world’s most powerful and violent witch. Nathan is hunted from all sides: nowhere is safe and no one can be trusted. Now, Nathan has come into his own unique magical Gift, and he’s on the run–but the Hunters are close behind, and they will stop at nothing until they have captured Nathan and destroyed his father.

The Good

  • The Characters – I think Green did a great job really showing the complexity and depth to her characters, even the minor ones. Obviously Nathan is extremely complex and is at constant war with his inner demons. But I liked how we were able to witness some of the other characters have their own secrets come to light. And I really enjoyed the newcomers to the story – especially, Van and Nesbitt. I believe that they even stole some of the scenes. And that Gabriel, what a sweet guy.
  • Plot – You know how typically the 2nd book in a series or trilogy has a drop in quality compared to the rest? Well, that wasn’t the case in this one! This book was exciting from start to finish, and took some unexpected turns that I really was surprised with (in a good way!). I don’t want to give too much away so I’ll just say – that cliffhanger killed me.
  • Nathan – Man, talk about inner turmoil. Try going through your teen years that are already pretty crazy and emotional, and then toss into it that your a half Black, half White witch and everyone expects you to go crazy homicidal at any moment just like your dad… Yeah, I’d say that Nathan makes for one interesting character. I like watching him grow in this book and see how much he’d changed from the first book.

The Bad

  • The Romance – Here’s the deal, I enjoy romance in my books. I like the fun will-they-won’t-they aspect and watching relationships develop. My only caveat with the romance in Half Wild was that I didn’t get that development, at least in regards to one relationship. I felt like it just came outta left field all of a sudden. Maybe I was just completely blind to it during the first book and wasn’t seeing what was right in front of me, but I wasn’t expecting it at all. If you’ve read this book then you’ll probably know what I’m referring to.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I was expecting it to be another 2nd book hangover and just drag along as a filler until the conclusion. Luckily, I was wrong! This one was filled with new characters, some revisits, action, and a whole lot of WTF moments (the fun kind). Way to avoid that second book slump, Green!

Final Verdict: 4/5 Stars

What are your thoughts on Half Wild? Have you read this trilogy? Did you see that romance coming? Am I just an idiot? Okay, the last question was rhetorical… No need to answer that!

Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3) by Sarah J. Maas

I’m super close to finishing this book, possibly even by tonight. It’s been a pretty fun read, as has been the entire series so far. However, I really think Maas could’ve left out about 100 pages and still been alright. There is a bit of a lull in the book that is causing me to read this slower than I was expecting to.

What did you recently finish reading?

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2) by Sarah J. Maas

Half Wild (Half Bad Trilogy, #2) &  Half Lost (Half Bad Trilogy, #3) by Sally Green

I really enjoyed both of these book. I feel like CoM has been the best book in the Throne of Glass series so far, but there is still plenty of time for that to change. And I really enjoyed the way Half Lost wrapped up the trilogy. It was heartbreaking and beautiful, which I think was perfect for matching the darker tone of the entire series. Look for these reviews to be posted over the next few days!

What do you think you’ll read next?

The Midnight Star (The Young Elites, #3) by Marie Lu

A Torch Against the Night (An Ember in the Ashes, #2) by Sabaa Tahir

I figured I’d take a little break from Calaena before diving back into the Throne of Glass series and catch up on some of the other series I’m in the middle of. I’m so excited to get to The Midnight Star and see how Adelina’s story ends. She’s probably one of my favorite antiheroes ever. I’m a little less excited about A Torch Against the Night, as I wasn’t as impressed with the first book as most people were. It was a bit boring (sorry!) overall, but was saved by a pretty exciting ending.

What does your WWW Wednesday look like? Have you read any of the books on my list? What are your thoughts on them? Is A Torch Against the Night better than An Ember in the Ashes? Do you think The Midnight Star wrapped up The Young Elites trilogy well?

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

Polarizing opinions abound with this book but I’m finding myself pleasantly enjoying the story. It’s witty, sarcastic, and completely making fun of Harry Potter. Yes, I am a huge HP fan and have been since I read the first book when I was 9, but I can’t help that this story is making me chuckle at its not-so-subtle satire.

The Beauty of Darkness (The Remnant Chronicles, #3) by Mary E. Pearson

I know I’ve been hating on this series… But y’all, this last book was fantastic. Fantastic closing to this trilogy (maybe The Winner’s Kiss should learn some pointers), and one that I’m extremely glad to have continued with until the end.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Half Wild (The Half Bad Trilogy, #2) Half Lost (The Half Bad Trilogy, #3) by Sally Green

Here’s the thing with these two books – I really don’t remember what happened in the first book. I believe when it ended we were in Switzerland but I cannot for the life of me remember how the story got there. I could put this series on the back burner and do a reread of Half Bad first but I don’t really feel like a reread right now. And hey, it’s October, so why not finish a series about witches?

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: What is currently on your TBR pile?

Up Next I Think I’ll Read…

23734628

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

I know I should continue on and finish out my Smashing Series September until the 1st. However, I don’t expect to finish another series by Saturday after I finish The Beauty of Darkness (The Remnant Chronicles, #3). I guess I’ll just continue my series through October and finish this month out by reading our Hype or Like Friday BOTM. I’ve only read one other of Rowell’s books, Fangirl, and while I enjoyed it, I didn’t have any plans to read another one of her novels. But this one is a fantasy and not contemporary so that’s a major plus in my book! Get it, my “book”? Haha! Feel free to join our Hype or Like Friday group on Goodreads HERE.

What Is Currently On Your TBR?

Hahahahahaha y’all really do not want me to list all of the books that I’ve bought these past few months and haven’t read yet. We would be sitting here until Christmas going over all of them. So for the sake of everyone’s sanity, I shall just list the ones that I plan to read over the next month. A few will be leftovers from Series Smashing September with a sprinkle of randoms thrown in for fun.

Yeah, that’s right – I’m the only loser who has owned Six of Crows since March and hasn’t read it yet! I figured I’d just wait and until Crooked Kingdom was released and binge read the duology. Also, I CANNOT wait to get my hands on The Midnight Star! This trilogy is one of the best and darkest that I’ve read, and I am so excited to see how it ends. If you haven’t read Marie Lu’s The Young Elites series – DO IT. You won’t regret it.

What’s next on your TBR? What are some books that you’ve had for a while but haven’t gotten around to reading yet? Have you read any on my list? Leave a link to your Musing Monday post in the comments!

The Winner’s Kiss (The Winner’s Trilogy, #3) by Marie Rutkoski

So far this book has been non-stop. I haven’t gotten too far into it, as I chose to sleep last night instead of read, but I can’t wait to see how this trilogy ends! And can we all agree that the Emperor makes for a pretty awesome bad guy? Like I am legitimately nervous every time he shows up!

What Did You Recently Finish Reading?

The Winner’s Crime (The Winner’s Trilogy, #2) by Marie Rutkoski, 4 stars

Yellow Brick War (Dorothy Must Die, #3) by Danielle Paige, 3 stars

The Wicked Will Rise (Dorothy Must Die, #2) by Danielle Paige, 4 stars

2 outta 3 being pretty good makes for a decent reading weekend, I think. Unfortunately, I was a little let down by the Yellow Brick War. I thought it was kind of slow and anticlimactic. Blahhhhh…

What Do You Think You’ll Read Next?

Half Wild (Half Bad, #2) & Half Lost (Half Bad, #3) by Sally Green

I shall continue on with Smashing Series September and finish off another trilogy, Half Bad. I’m currently waiting for one of them to arrive with order from Book Outlet, which should hopefully be here within the next couple of days. I’ll be honest, I kind of forgot what happened in the first book. Oops? Also, I haven’t really seen any reviews for this series which will make for a nice change in pace from my usual reads.

I Bought the Following Book(s) this Past Week…

My book haul from the awesome Books-A-Million. I went in to just buy Furthermore but of course I couldn’t leave with just one book.

This is my book haul from Book Outlet. I was able to get all of these books in hardcover for only $60, and that’s including shipping. Seriously, best bargain book haul EVER!

Smashing Series September

It’s finally here, the beginning of my month long challenge to finish (or catch up) with as many series that I’ve already started as possible. I’m a binge reader by nature so I thought this would be the best way for me to do this. Let’s see just how well it turns out…

The Wicked Will Rise (Dorothy Must Die, #2) & Yellow Brick War (Dorothy Must Die, #3)

First up to finish is the final two books in the Dorothy Must Die Trilogy by Danielle Paige. I enjoyed this first book when I read it back in the spring. Luckily, I was able to pick both of these books up from the library yesterday – talk about perfect timing!

The Winner’s Crime (The Winner’s Trilogy, #2) & The Winner’s Kiss (The Winner’s Trilogy, #3)

I read the first book in this trilogy back during BookCon and really enjoyed it. I have been thinking about that cliffhanger ever since. I’ve just got to know how this series ends!!

The Heart of Betrayal (The Remnant Chronicles, #2) & The Beauty of Darkness (The Remnant Chronicles, #3)

I wasn’t enthralled with the first book in this series, The Kiss of Deception, but it did get better as it went along. I also have to know what happens next because of that DAMN CLIFFHANGER!!!! I just hope it’s worth it.

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2)Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass, #3)Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4)Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass, #5)

Throne of Glass was fairly entertaining but I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as ACOTAR. I’ve heard that this series gets better with each book, so I’m looking forward to seeing where it leads. I’m going to need see Celaena actually do badass stuff in these books, because her supposed awesomeness suffered from too much tell and not enough show. I have yet to see the proof that she’s the greatest assassin in the land.

Half Wild (The Half Bad Trilogy, #2) & Half Lost (The Half Bad Trilogy, #3)

This is one of the most unique stories that I’ve read this year. I’ve heard various opinions on the rest of the series so this might be a hit or miss for me.

I think I’m aiming a little too high with this month’s challenge, but I like a little pressure! I’m also hoping to get to Six of Crows & Crooked Kingdom as I’ve preordered the sequel and have been hearing some amazing things about this series. However, I didn’t add it as I bet it’ll be October before I actually am able to read them. I kind of regret waiting to read Six of Crows until the sequel was released – I’ve only had it since February. Yup, that long!

This month should be fun and intense as I speed my way through these awesome series. Feel free to join in for Smashing Series September if you like! All are welcome to jump on the crazy train with me! 🙂
