My Recent TBR Adds That You Might Not Have Heard Of, Part 2

I did this post a few months ago and really enjoyed it. So why not bring it back? I actually have added quite a few new books to my TBR recently and I couldn’t wait to share them with y’all. I mean, we all love to hear/talk about new books for our TBRs, right?! I know I sure as heck do.

Enchantée by Gita Trelease

Paris in 1789 is a labyrinth of twisted streets, filled with beggars, thieves, revolutionaries—and magicians…

When smallpox kills her parents, Camille Durbonne must find a way to provide for her frail, naive sister while managing her volatile brother. Relying on petty magic—la magie ordinaire—Camille painstakingly transforms scraps of metal into money to buy the food and medicine they need. But when the coins won’t hold their shape and her brother disappears with the family’s savings, Camille must pursue a richer, more dangerous mark: the glittering court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.

With dark magic her mother forbade her to use, Camille transforms herself into the ‘Baroness de la Fontaine’ and is swept up into life at the Palace of Versailles, where aristocrats both fear and hunger for la magie. Though Camille’s resentment of the rich is at at odds with the allure of glamour and excess, when she meets a handsome inventor she believes liberty and love may finally be possible.

But la magie has its costs. When a scheming courtier blackmails her and Lazare’s affections shift, Camille loses control of her secrets. Then revolution erupts, and she must choose—love or loyalty, democracy or aristocracy, reality or la magie—before Paris burns…

The Tiger at Midnight (The Tiger at Midnight Trilogy, #1) by Swati Teerdhala

Esha is a legend, but no one knows. It’s only in the shadows that she moonlights as the Viper, the rebels’ highly skilled assassin. She’s devoted her life to avenging what she lost in the royal coup, and now she’s been tasked with her most important mission to date: taking down the ruthless General Hotha.

Kunal has been a soldier since childhood, training morning and night to uphold the power of King Vardaan. His uncle, the general, has ensured that Kunal never strays from the path—even as a part of Kunal longs to join the outside world, which has been growing only more volatile.

Then Esha’s and Kunal’s paths cross—and an unimaginable chain of events unfolds. Both the Viper and the soldier think they’re calling the shots, but they’re not the only players moving the pieces. As the bonds that hold their land in order break down and the sins of the past meet the promise of a new future, both rebel and soldier must make unforgivable choices.

Drawing inspiration from ancient Indian history and Hindu mythology, the first book in Swati Teerdhala’s debut fantasy trilogy captivates with electric romance, stunning action, and the fierce bonds that hold people together—and that drive them apart.

Circle of Shadows (Circle of Shadows, #1) by Evelyn Sky

A thrilling new fantasy series full of magic and betrayal, inspired by feudal Japan–from Evelyn Skye, New York Timesbestselling author of the Crown’s Game series.

Sora can move as silently as a ghost and hurl throwing stars with lethal accuracy. Her gemina, Daemon, can win any physical fight blindfolded and with an arm tied around his back. They are apprentice warriors of the Society of Taigas–marked by the gods to be trained in magic and the fighting arts to protect the kingdom of Kichona.

As their graduation approaches, Sora and Daemon look forward to proving themselves worthy of belonging in the elite group–but in a kingdom free of violence since the Blood Rift Rebellion many years ago, it’s been difficult to make their mark.

So when Sora and Daemon encounter a strange camp of mysterious soldiers while on a standard scouting mission, they decide the only thing to do to help their kingdom is to infiltrate the group. Taking this risk will change Sora’s life forever–and lead her on a mission of deception that may fool everyone she’s ever loved.

Love, spies, and adventure abound as Sora and Daemon unravel a complex web of magic and secrets that might tear them–and the entire kingdom–apart forever.

The Last of Her Name by Jessica Khoury

Sixteen years ago, rebellion swept the galaxy known as the Belt of Jewels. Every member of the royal family was murdered–down to their youngest child, Princess Anya–and the Union government rose in its place. But Stacia doesn’t think much about politics. She spends her days half-wild, rambling her father’s vineyard with her closest friends, Clio and Pol.

That all changes the day a Union ship appears in town, carrying the leader of the Belt himself, the Direktor Eminent. The Direktor claims that Princess Anya is alive, and that Stacia’s sleepy village is a den of empire loyalists, intent on hiding her. When Stacia is identified as the lost princess, her provincial home explodes into a nightmare.

Pol smuggles her away to a hidden escape ship in the chaos, leaving Clio in the hands of the Union. With everything she knows threading away into stars, Stacia sets her heart on a single mission. She will find and rescue Clio, even with the whole galaxy on her trail.

The Truth Lies Here by Lindsey Klingele

Netflix’s Stranger Things meets Men in Black in the first stand-alone young adult novel from Lindsey Klingele.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN BONE LAKE? THE TRUTH WILL SURPRISE YOU.

This funny, eerie stand-alone novel is set in small town Michigan, where Penny, an aspiring journalist, teams up with the nerdy boy-next-door and the town’s star quarterback to find her conspiracy theorist father after he goes missing and several other townspeople turn up dead in the woods.

The deeper she digs, the weirder things start to get. Townspeople repeat the same phrases—verbatim. Men in black suits stroll around Main Street. Chunks of her memory go missing. Pretty soon, Penny’s research leads her to the long-ago meteorite crash in Bone Lake’s woods, and she’s going to have to reconsider her definition of “real” if she wants answers. . . .

Recommendations: Winter Reads

It’s that time of year again when the snow starts falling, the fires start crackling, and out come the coats and mittens! I don’t know if it’s because I’m a winter baby or what, but I’ve always loved wintertime. It’s the season of nostalgia and the perfect time for curling up with some hot cocoa and a good book. And to make it just a little easier or deciding what books to grab, I’ve compiled a list of some that I think would be perfect to pick up this season.

24485589

Hunted by Meagan Spooner

This is Beauty and the Beast retelling that is just really beautiful. The writing is lyrical with lush descriptions and the story itself really evokes that sense of nostalgia that this time of year is all about. Plus, the romance is the kind of slow burner that we all love!

26156203

The Crown’s Game (The Crown’s Game, #1) by Evelyn Skye

This first book in a duology, follows two enchanters who must compete to become the Imperial Enchanter to the tsar of Russia. I haven’t gotten around to reading the sequel yet, but this book was just such a warm and fuzzy read. If you enjoyed the competition aspect of The Night Circus, then you’ll easily be able to dive into this story as well. If you’re a history lover like me, you’ll also appreciate the mix of real life with the fantastical elements.

2213661

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

This book is all about nostalgia. It will remind you of the classic children’s novels you read when you were little, and still be completely enjoyable at any age. This is one book that I recommend for the entire family, especially the audiobook version. There’s a special audiobook version that includes an entire cast, music, and sound effects. IT IS AMAZING. This would be a great story to listen to while everyone sits around the fireplace in food coma after Christmas dinner.

10920

Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier

Now, this story is a little bleaker than the rest on this list but I think it still fits perfectly for winter. It’s a love story set during the Civil War, but is more about the journey rather than the destination. I can’t promise you’ll finish this book all rainbows and sunshine, but I can promise that you’ll appreciate the beautiful prose. Afterwards, you can turn on the movie adaptation starring Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. It’s actually a very good adaptation that I highly recommend.

30065028

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling

Because Harry Potter. Duh.

8667848

A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness

This is just one of those that you want to savor and stay up all night devouring. It has an actual vampire to fangirl over, no Edward-wannabe here! This series actual combines science with the paranormal/fantasy elements which I found to be incredibly intriguing. You can definitely see Harkness’ scholar background coming through in this series. It has actually been turned into a television show that is currently filming its first season. The wait is killllllllling me!

29430012

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

This is the perfect book if you’re in the mood for something with a wonderful cast of characters and a heartwarming story. I read this one just last month and absolutely fell in love with it. It’s charming, sweet, and is definitely a story that I can see myself revisiting for the rest of my life.

16096824

A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas

I don’t what it is about this trilogy, but something about it just screams winter to me. I feel like this is one of those series that you should binge it over Christmas vacation. The story, the characters, the romance – all of it will completely engross you from beginning to end. I recommend reading this one while munching on some holiday treats!

1934

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Nothing will give you the holiday spirit quite like spending time with your loved ones, and this book will definitely get you in that kind of mood. The March sisters will make you feel like family as you follow their adventures. One of my all-time favorite books and one that is perfect to pick up this season.

What are some books that you recommend reading during the wintertime? Have you read any of the books on my list? Do you like to reread old favorites during the holidays?

A Comprehensive Guide to Series that I’ve Started but Haven’t Finished

I think the title really speaks for itself with this one. I’ve been thinking of all of the series that I’ve started but haven’t caught up with or finished. Hopefully by posting this, I’ll finally get on top of that. I mean, I can dream right?

Side Note: I’ll only list series that there are multiple books out already or have already been completely published that I just haven’t gotten to yet. I’m not including ones that only have the first book out and stuff like that. And if the sequel only came out within the last month or so, probably won’t be including that either.

Leviathan Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld

I listened to the first book back at the beginning of the summer and have been dying to finish the series ever since then. This is like the penultimate steampunk story ever. Well, at least in my mind it is.

The Crown’s Game Duology by Evelyn Skye

I really enjoyed the first novel. I actually liked it a whole lot more than The Night Circus that everyone compares it to. Hopefully the finale is even better!

Pure Trilogy by Julianna Baggott

Yet another one that I have only read the first book of and yet I own the entire series. I probably should get on that, right?

The Great Library Series by Rachel Caine

Ash and Quill was released back in July and I STILL haven’t read it yet. What the hell is wrong with me? This has been one my most anticipated releases this year! I am so ashamed right now.

outlander-book-series

Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon

Even though I’m obsessed with this series (and tv show!), I have been putting off picking up The Fiery Cross because Brianna annoys me so much. I feel like she’s always causing more problems than what’s needed and I know the series is going to start focusing on her… UGH.

the-mortal-instrument-redesign.png

The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare

I don’t quite remember, but I think I read the first 3 books but never caught up from there. I’ve even read the entire Infernal Devices Trilogy! I do have plans in the near future finish out this series and then continue on with the newest installment, The Dark Artifices. Basically, Captain Eventually at this point…

lunar-chronicles-marissa-meyer.png

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

I honestly wasn’t sure if I should include this series as I’ve technically read Cinder so long ago that I don’t even remember what it was about. So I’ve decided to add it to my TBR for next month and finally finish off the series.

What are some series that you’ve started but haven’t finished or caught up on yet? Do you like to wait to start series after every book has been published? Do you try and stay away from series?

June Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

June was a decent reading month for me as I started my Smashing Series Round 2. I focused mostly on catching up on or finishing series that I had already started. I’ll be continuing that Smashing Series through this month, so expect to see more series reviews!

I did start listening to audiobooks for the first time ever in June and can now say that I actually love them. I listen to them all day while I’m at work so if it seems like I speed through them faster than normal, that’s why. Also, if you know of any good ones then please let me know!

King’s Cage (Red Queen, #3) by Victoria Aveyard

I’m a little upset that I didn’t get to read hardly any over the holiday weekend, due to having a bunch of family in town. However, I do plan to do a lot of reading this week. I’m only about 75 pages into this one so far and it’s been fairly interesting up to this point. We’ll see how the rest goes.

In this breathless third installment to Victoria Aveyard’s bestselling Red Queen series, allegiances are tested on every side. And when the Lightning Girl’s spark is gone, who will light the way for the rebellion?

Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother’s web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.

As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare’s heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.

When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.

Leviathan (Leviathan, #1) by Scott Westerfeld

I’m still currently listening my way through this audiobook. I’m more than halfway through it now though, so I’m pretty excited about that. It’s getting very interesting and I cannot wait to see where it goes next.

Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battletorn war machine and a loyal crew of men.

Deryn Sharp is a commoner, disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. She’s a brilliant airman. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered.

With World War I brewing, Alek and Deryn’s paths cross in the most unexpected way…taking them on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure that will change both their lives forever.

The Crown’s Game (The Crown’s Game, #1) by Evelyn Skye

I really enjoyed this book. It was a light and easy fantasy read, if a bit lacking on real tension and conflict. I do plan on picking up the sequel at some point soon. I’m really interested in seeing if the author expands on a real antagonist. You can read my full review HERE.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Starfall (Starflight, #2) by Melissa Landers
  • The Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1) by Samantha Shannon

I’ll be finishing up the Starflight duology next and then moving on to The Bone Season. I’ve got high hopes of finishing up my Smashing Series this month. I’m running a little behind already due to the holiday weekend but I plan to catch up quickly. Fingers crossed!

When The Crown’s Game (The Crown’s Game, #1) by Evelyn Skye first came out last year, I had seen mixed reviews on it so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Luckily, this book was a surprisingly fun and pleasant read!

Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air. They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side.

And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill—the greatest test an enchanter will ever know. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip-smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love…or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear—the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

This was one of those books where it’s not perfect or overly spectacular, but just pleasant. I really enjoyed the plot and how the author was able to weave a bit of the fantastical with real history. There is definitely an air of romance around 19th century Russia, which was definitely in full view throughout The Crown’s Game. I appreciated that the author was able to fully display her area of expertise in this novel.

To our brave sailors,.png

I enjoyed Nikolai and Vika. Both were well-fleshed out characters and very distinctive from one another. Vika was so spunky and independent, which I loved. I thought the relationship with her father was so sweet and cute! Seriously, why can’t we have more adorable families in YA? I swear it’s like author’s treat family units like a disease or something. SO SILLY. Nikolai was so vulnerable and stern. I thought he really contrasted well against fiery Vika and bubbly Pasha. It was interesting to follow the relationships build and change between these three characters. I also loved all of the side characters like Renata and Ludmila. And can I just request to have a baker as amazing as Ludmila come be friends with me? I think that’s something very lacking in my life, haha!

I think my only issue with this book was that I never felt any apprehension or sense of dread for my characters. The “villain” wasn’t really a true villain and I wasn’t even sure if they were actually supposed to be even considered as the villain until the end. There just wasn’t enough tension or real conflict that could push the plot along. It was just a very la-te-da type of story. Perhaps that will change with the sequel though? I’m really hoping it does as that’s all this story is missing to really make it amazing.

Final Verdict:

1414478

Have you read The Crown’s Game? What did you think of it? Do you think it was missing a true antagonist? Have you read the sequel?

The Crown’s Game (The Crown’s Game, #1) by Evelyn Skye

I only have about 40 pages left in this book and plan to finish it tonight. I’m really enjoying this one so far. I love when authors mix fantasy with historical fiction and this one is no exception. I can’t wait to see how this one ends!

Leviathan (Leviathan, #1) by Scott Westerfeld

This is my current audiobook that I grabbed from Overdrive last night. I’ve listened to 4 audiobooks since I started last week. Can you believe it?! I listen to them all day while I’m at work and I really enjoy it. So far this book has been really interesting, mixing steampunk with WWI. I kind of went into this one blind and so far, so good!

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Glass Sword (Red Queen, #2) by Victoria Aveyard
  • The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
  • Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
  • Pure (Pure, #1) by Julianna Baggott

I had a really good reading week. Granted 3 of these were audiobooks but still, it counts! I enjoyed these for the most part but was a little let down by Mr. Penumbra’s, as it was very anti-climatic and went overboard with the technical jargon. I’m glad that I listened to the audiobook version of Pure since I really don’t have the time to reread it before finishing the rest of the trilogy. It was just as intense as I remembered.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • King’s Cage (Red Queen, #3) by Victoria Aveyard
  • The Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1) by Samantha Shannon
  • The Queen of the Tearling (The Queen of the Tearling, #1) by Erika Johansen

I will definitely be reading the King’s Cage next, and then it’s a toss up between The Bone Season (a reread) and The Queen of the Tearling. Both are part of my Smashing Series that I’ve decided to extend through July as well. We shall see which one will come first!

Glass Sword (Red Queen, #2) by Victoria Aveyard

This book is decent so far. I wouldn’t say that it’s as exciting as the first book, but it’s still decent. I have about 70 pages left though and hope to finish it today. I’ve been going slower with this book but I’m also currently in the process of moving so I haven’t been doing much reading this week so far.

If there’s one thing Mare Barrow knows, it’s that she’s different.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they’ve always known—and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

So if you follow me on Twitter, you’ll probably have heard that I started my first audiobook earlier this week. Well I finished it yesterday on my way home from work and decided for my next one, that I would go with this book that’s been on my TBR list since forever ago. When I saw that Audible offered the full cast production of it, I knew I had to have it. I just started it this morning and am already in love! I definitely recommend this version if you’re interested in it.

After the grisly murder of his entire family, a toddler wanders into a graveyard where the ghosts and other supernatural residents agree to raise him as one of their own.

Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn’t live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead. There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod’s family…

Beloved master storyteller Neil Gaiman returns with a luminous new novel for the audience that embraced his New York Times bestselling modern classic Coraline. Magical, terrifying, and filled with breathtaking adventures, The Graveyard Book is sure to enthrall readers of all ages.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • The Lost Letter by Jillian Cantor
  • A Million Worlds with You (Firebird, #3) by Claudia Gray

The Lost Letter was my first audiobook ever and I loved it. It was a great love story, told in such a unique way that it didn’t feel like the same ol’ same ol’ WWII novel. I loved how it went back and forth between 1938 and 1989, showing how the two different POVs were connected. I also recommend the audiobook for this one, as the narrators did a great job!

A Million Worlds with You was a great conclusion to this trilogy. I do think that the ending was a bit wrapped up too easily, but other than that, it was a really thrilling story. If you want a good romance story full of action and adventure, then this trilogy is probably what you’re looking for.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • King’s Cage (Red Queen, #3) by Victoria Aveyard
  • The Crown’s Game (The Crown’s Game, #1) by Evelyn Skye – Hype or Like Friday June BOTM

I have decided to extend Smashing Series Round 2 through the end of July. I realized I actually have more series that I originally thought, and I think it’s time to knock them all out. I’ll be posting my July TBR next week sometime but until then, I’ll finish out June with these two beauties.
