My Book Outlet Book Haul

I finally got book buying itch recently during Book Outlet’s July sale and so I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a nice little box full of goodies. If you aren’t familiar with Book Outlet, it’s an online bookseller that sells new and used book at serious discounts. They focus on selling overstock, bargain bin, etc. books so you’re always getting a really great deal. They also have special sales all of the time which lowers their crazy prices even further. I think I usually average around $7 for a brand new hardback… Yep, you read that right! The only downfall to Book Outlet is that they currently only ship to Canada and the U.S. But if you are able, I highly recommend checking them out!

Hush (Hush, #1) by Dylan Farrow

I haven’t seen much on this book since its release, but I’ve had it on my radar ever since that cover was first revealed. It’s so pretty, right?!

45726037

Layoverland  by Gabby Noone

The synopsis of this book sounds like so much fun. I am here for a little bit of purgatory!

Seasons of the Storm (Seasons of the Storm, #1)  by Elle Cosimano

A Jack Frost retelling?? Yes, you heard that right!

14781261

Decline and Fall  by Evelyn Waugh

This is apparently an English classic and humorous tale about 1920’s high society. I had never heard of until recently but it does sound like a lot of fun!

Tilly and the Bookwanderers (Pages & Co., #1)  by Anna James

I have been on the biggest middle grade kick recently and this book sounds like it has everything that I love about that genre. Whimsical fun set amongst classic children’s novels coming to life sounds like the makings of a new favorite to me.

44779631._SY475_

The Girl and the Witch’s Garden  by Erin Bowman

I find Bowman to be such a good author. She had me hooked from her debut novel so I’m really excited what she can do with her first foray into middle grade.

34051011

Pachinko  by Min Jin Lee

I feel like I’ve put off this award-winning novel for far too long.

52750517

Vampires Never Get Old: Tales with Fresh Bite  edited by Zoraida Cordova & Natalie C. Parker

I will fully admit to still loving any story to do with vampires. I feel like there’s something that will never not be badass about those bloodsuckers. I also know that Schwab’s story is currently being filmed as a new show for Netflix, so you know I have to check out the original before it arrives!

33517480

From Unseen Fire (Aven Cycle, #1)  by Cass Morris

I am very much into a fantastical alternate history version of Ancient Rome. Reviews say this book focuses a lot of the plot on political intrigue which makes me very excited!

44014779

A Tale of Magic… (Tale of Magic, #1)  by Chris Colfer

Another middle grade that I’ve heard some pretty good things about!

36421611._SY475_

The Luxe (The Luxe, #1)  by Anna Godbersen

I actually read this series back when I was in high school but I don’t remember much about it except that I really enjoyed it. I plan on doing a buddy reread for it with Geronimo Reads soon to see if we both still enjoy it this second time around… Controversial Opinion (for me): I actually prefer the original covers with the dresses, as they definitely reflected the Gilded Age setting much more.

36300687

French Exit  by Patrick DeWitt

This sounds like such a funny, weird and quirky story that would be nice palate cleanser from my usual fantasy novels. Plus, who doesn’t enjoy a novel set in Paris?

49630951

My Calamity Jane (The Lady Janies, #3)  by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton & Jodi Meadows

I read the first book about Jane Grey but haven’t read the second one on Jane Eyre but I do own it, so I hope to pick them both up soon to finish out the series.

2835816

The First Man in Rome (Masters of Rome, #1)  by Colleen McCullough

I’ve read some of Colleen’s other books and enjoyed them so I’m glad to pick up this one. It’s another Ancient Rome setting.. I’m sort of sensing a theme here. Haha!

Fall is one of, if not, my favorite time of the year! I’m also quite partial to winter because it’s when Christmas and my birthday is… though I promise it’s not all about presents, haha! Really, I just love cold weather. Give me sweaters and leggings all day, every day!

A Million Junes by Emily Henry

I will never stop recommending this book. Emily Henry can write the most beautiful stories that will both lift you up and break your heart. If you haven’t picked up either of her novels, I highly suggest you do. No one can write magical realism like this woman can!

This book is just so stinking cute. I can promise that it will make you smile while reading it. I mean, who can resist a sassy heroine falling in love with a sassy hero? I surely can’t!

Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman

This book is just so freaking awesome. Kate is one of the most badass heroines that you’ll ever come across and I want to be her best friend. Seriously, one of my top 5 reads of 2016. The companion novel comes out really soon too!

Armada by Ernest Cline

I think it’s pretty easy to see where science fiction novels tend to be pretty action packed, and Armada is the perfect example of that. The book starts off with a bang and doesn’t stop once. You’ll never have to worry about getting bored with this one!

Into the Bright Unknown (Gold Seer Trilogy, #3) by Rae Carson

Y’all, I cannot wait to get my greedy little hands on this beauty. This trilogy has been such an underrated gem. I just don’t understand how it’s been able to fly under the radar for so long. I just know this finale is going to kill me and I’m not even ready for it.

A Slytherin Reading List

Since my Ravenclaw reading list was such a big hit last month, I thought I’d continue the fun for each House. I firmly believe that no House is any better than any other House. They each have their strengths and weaknesses, and all are full of wonderful people. I actually believe that I’m a little bit of each House all jumbled together, just more Ravenclaw than any other. I’ve actually heard lots of people say that about themselves which I think is very cool and interesting. I mean, I wonder how many other students argued with the Sorting Hat over which House they should be in. I’m almost completely positive that Harry Potter wasn’t the only one.

But today, let’s focus on the ambitious and cunning Slytherins!

P.S. I wasn’t able to translate the entire post in Parseltongue, maybe next t.

1. The Young Elites trilogy by Marie Lu

Adelina is the ultimate badass. She’s smart, ambitious, and isn’t afraid of anything. Basically, she’d be the Queen Bee of the Slytherin House. I’m pretty sure that even Malfoy wouldn’t want to mess with her!

2. Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas

Y’all cannot tell me that Celaena wouldn’t be in Slytherin! I mean, she’s full-blooded nobility and she’s oozing resourcefulness from every pore. I don’t think this girl even knows how to back down from a challenge. I think we can all agree that she embodies everything that Slytherin stands for.

3. Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman

23719270

What do Slytherins love? Well I think they love people who earn their respect and the main character in Vengeance Road is one such person. I dare you to read this book and not dream of becoming best friends with Kate.

4. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

182

A man hell bent on revenge for being wrongly imprisoned for 13 years thanks to his former best friend? Get out your popcorn, Slytherin, because you’re in for a damn good ride!

5. Shades of Magic trilogy by V.E. Schwab

I’ll admit that I went a little back and forth on this selection. I honestly felt that Lila could actually fit in both Slytherin and Gryffindor (with Kell definitely being a Hufflepuff), but I ultimately decided that this is a series for Slytherins. Fear isn’t a word in Lila Bard’s vocabulary and she goes after exactly what she wants, and I’d have to say that she prides herself on that.

6. The Godfather by Mario Puzo

22034

Please… You know that the Corleone’s are the muggle equivalent to the Malfoy’s. Both are families that share legacies of tradition and blood, and they are extremely proud of that fact too.

7. Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray

820e6a19bcae75bf74e3b210afe99ef7

A novel about how an ambitious young works her way to the upper echelons of British society in the early 19th century? Oh yes, Becky Sharp is a total Slytherin. Watching her maneuver and manipulate her way to the top is nothing short of extraordinary.

8. Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

23207027

3 sisters battling to the death in order to win the crown? HA! Child’s play…

9. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

8442457

I think it’s okay to admit that Amy Dunne would be a Slytherin. Cunning? Check. Resourceful? Check. Proud? Check. Yep, the Sorting Hat would definitely know where to stick her immediately.

10. The Broken Empire trilogy by Mark Lawrence

A prince who’s fled his thrown and decided to lead a band of outlaws raiding and pillaging across the land? Hmmm, sounds like something a Slytherin might do if they were really pissed off.

Slytherins, what did you think of this list? What books do you disagree with? What are some books that you would add? Let me know in the comments!

Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman

This was probably one of my favorite books of 2016. It was dark, full of action and features one of the most independent and badass heroines. I love it. It’s the perfect read if you’re looking for a straight revenge story. And that cover is freaking awesome, too. You can read my full review HERE.

Revenge is worth its weight in gold.

When her father is murdered for a journal revealing the location of a hidden gold mine, eighteen-year-old Kate Thompson disguises herself as a boy and takes to the gritty plains looking for answers—and justice. What she finds are untrustworthy strangers, endless dust and heat, and a surprising band of allies, among them a young Apache girl and a pair of stubborn brothers who refuse to quit riding in her shadow. But as Kate gets closer to the secrets about her family, a startling truth becomes clear: some men will stop at nothing to get their hands on gold, and Kate’s quest for revenge may prove fatal.

Book Review: Vengeance Road

I’m from Texas, born and raised. However, contrary to popular belief, this state is not a massive desert and we don’t all ride horse or live on ranches. I live in the East Texas and we call this area the Piney Woods because it’s all forest and hills. So no, I’m not too big on Westerns, novels or movies (except for Tombstone because that movie is effing awesome!). But Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman was glorious!

First off, Bowman did a fabulous job writing in the dialect of the Old West. You can actually catch yourself saying the dialogue out loud and pronouncing it just like they do in old Westerns. I loved that she wasn’t afraid to really get into it. She was really able to bring the desert of Arizona to life in this story. I also liked how gritty she made this plot. There was shoot outs, blood, really dirty saloons, and even some prostitutes. There’s no sugar-coating the story that Bowman has created and it’s definitely a bit more mature than I was expecting. When an author isn’t afraid to kill her characters, you know the shit is real.

DESSERTS

Kate is what really drives this story. She is the ultimate badass MC! Her quest for vengeance for her father’s death is all that matters to her. I love that she has no moral qualms about what she’s doing. She does what needs to be done, and unlike most YA characters, she doesn’t spend the rest of the novel whining about the choices she made. It’s unapologetic and it’s real. I get so tired of characters nowadays bitching and moaning about their life and what they’ve done. Life isn’t great, people. You’re not perfect, just own your shit! Okay, mini rant is over. But seriously, Kate is the rare MC that you actually take seriously. I never felt myself questioning whether her revenge felt real, you truly felt it! Everyone talks about Lila Bard being this strong female character, but where I felt her to be a bit fake and too much of just a book character, Kate seems so real.

0001-194166973

I loved the MC and the secondary characters like the Colton brothers and Lil, the Native American girl. They all had their own distinctive personalities and brought something different to the story. And the villains were pretty vicious. I loved getting to hate them and wonder why they had killed Kate’s father. Bowman did a great job of bringing these characters to life.

Hell, I'll be s

I didn’t find too many issues with this book. It was fast-paced, exciting, and had quite the interesting plot twist at the end which I was really not expecting! When I first heard about this book, I was a little worried it would be too cutesy with some love triangle as the actual focus, but boy was I wrong. There is some romance but it’s a slow burn and never takes over the plot, just adds a little something to it. If you’re looking for a new kind of YA novel with an independent and morally ambiguous heroine who loves to read Little Women and shoot up some bad guys, then this book is for you!

Final Verdict: 5/5 Stars
