TOPIC OF THE WEEK: Things That Go Bump in the Night… What are some of your favorite fictional creatures and books that feature them?

Dragons

As I was going through my books, I realized that dragons are not utilized enough in novels. Come on fantasy authors, give us some more of these awesome creatures. They’re so badass!

Goblins

24763621

Another really cool creature that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Goblins can be so fun and creepy! I kind of picture them as snarky little tricksters that like to be pranks on humans. They’re also fantasy creatures that you can use lightheartedly or really dark, depending on the story you wish to tell. I actually haven’t read Wintersong yet, so I’m not quite sure how they’re portrayed in it. Fingers crossed for dark!

Fae

Like goblins, Fae can be both good or bad. Luckily, these fantastical beings are quite popular in fiction and have definitely been having a moment the past few years. But I don’t ever think that I will get enough of reading about them, whether they’re portrayed as the heroes or the villains.

Vampires

And the number one creature that comes to mind… the famous vampire! I will always be a sucker for the undead immortals. Just like there’s always something sexy about the bad boy, vampires  give the same vibe. Maybe because they typically are the bad boy?! Either way, I will always enjoy a well written fantasy that portrays them. Also, if vampires are one of your guilty pleasures too, I highly recommend A Discovery of Witches. It’s the first book in an adult fantasy trilogy.

TOPIC OF THE WEEK:  Just Can’t Get Enough… What are some of your favorite retellings of classics?

  • A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas – Beauty and the Beast retelling
  • Heartstone by Elle Katharine White – Pride and Prejudice retelling
  • Alias Hook by Lisa Jensen – Peter Pan retelling
  • Helen of Troy by Margaret George – Trojan War retelling
  • The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller – Trojan War retelling
  • The Weight of Feathers by Anna-Marie McLemore – Romeo and Juliet retelling
  • Juliet by Anne Fortier – Romeo and Juliet retelling

These are just a few of my favorites that I’ve read the past few years. I’m sure that I’ve forgotten plenty and still have so many sitting on my shelves waiting to be read. Looks like I might need to do a retelling exclusive TBR one month, huh? That might be fun to do this fall!

What are some of your favorite retellings? Have you grown tired of all of the retellings published lately? Have you read any of my favorites?

Book Review: Heartstone

Do you wish there were more books with dragons in them? Do you love Pride and Prejudice? If you nodded, shrilled, or whispered yes to either both of those statements, then you’re in luck! Heartstone by Elle Katharine White is the answer to all of our prayers.

A debut historical fantasy that recasts Jane Austen’s beloved Pride & Prejudice in an imaginative world of wyverns, dragons, and the warriors who fight alongside them against the monsters that threaten the kingdom: gryphons, direwolves, lamias, banshees, and lindworms.

They say a Rider in possession of a good blade must be in want of a monster to slay—and Merybourne Manor has plenty of monsters.

Passionate, headstrong Aliza Bentaine knows this all too well; she’s already lost one sister to the invading gryphons. So when Lord Merybourne hires a band of Riders to hunt down the horde, Aliza is relieved her home will soon be safe again.

Her relief is short-lived. With the arrival of the haughty and handsome dragonrider, Alastair Daired, Aliza expects a battle; what she doesn’t expect is a romantic clash of wills, pitting words and wit against the pride of an ancient house. Nor does she anticipate the mystery that follows them from Merybourne Manor, its roots running deep as the foundations of the kingdom itself, where something old and dreadful slumbers . . . something far more sinister than gryphons.

It’s a war Aliza is ill-prepared to wage, on a battlefield she’s never known before: one spanning kingdoms, class lines, and the curious nature of her own heart.

Elle Katharine White infuses elements of Austen’s beloved novel with her own brand of magic, crafting a modern epic fantasy that conjures a familiar yet wondrously unique new world.

White’s writing is good, if nothing amazing or awe-inspiring. I found it to flow very well and was able to capture the essence of the Regency period without bogging the story down by being overly wordy. I will say that pacing-wise, the story was a little slow in the beginning but I think that might be the case for anyone who’s familiar with the Pride and Prejudice story, because you’re too excited to get to the point where our protagonists finally come together.

Now I’m sure that the original Miss Elizabeth Bennett will always be your number one, Aliza Bentaine will also make a place in your heart. Our new heroine has the same personality but is no longer just a bystander to her man, she is also the savior. In fact, it is the females that actually carry this novel. They steal every scene from the men and are the more interesting characters. But don’t worry, if you’re worried that you won’t be able to swoon over the new love interest, Alastair Daired, then lay those fears to rest as he is still the proud and irresistible man for us to fall in love with. I actually found myself noticing Daired being even more proud and arrogant than Mr. Darcy. Of course, if I was bonded to a badass dragon then I’d probably be a bit of a bitch too. So can you really blame him?!

Today's National Kissing Day!

I think what really makes this story stand out from the original, other than the obvious dragons, is the action. White is able to rework the storyline into a full-on fantasy battle between fairy-tale creatures. I loved being able to see how she tweaked the story in places to seamlessly create a brand new fantasy version while staying true to its original inspiration. While the love-to-hate romance (I’m always trash for this trope!) still shines, I found myself more excited for the actual action scenes. I never knew what was going to happen next or what creature might pop up.

With that being said, I do feel that the world-building was just a tad underdeveloped. With this being a standalone novel, I didn’t expect it to really be able to expand on the world but I do wish this book would’ve been longer in order to flesh it out more. I would’ve enjoyed more history and how that played into the politics of the world. White does make some mention of it in places, but I think it could have benefited with more. What about the other kingdoms? Why are the different creatures on different sides of the conflict? What was the catalyst to all of it? I obviously have a few unanswered questions that I’m hoping White can explore in some spin-off novels. Pretty, pretty please?!!

Final Verdict: 4/5 Stars

Have you read Heartstone? What did you think of it? What are some other Pride and Prejudice retellings that you’ve enjoyed? Do you have any books with dragons to recommend?

Aftermath: Life Debt (Star Wars: Aftermath, #2) by Chuck Wendig

I started this one last night and am about 50 pages into it. I’m enjoying this one so far, as it started with a really fun opening that was full of action. I will say that it is taking me a bit to get reacquainted with Wendig’s present tense writing… I will never understand why he does that.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, #1) by Laini Taylor – 4/5 stars, FULL REVIEW
  • Heartstone by Elle Katharine White – 4/5 stars, full review will be posted tomorrow

I had a very good reading week. I finished up Strange the Dreamer for the Hype or Like Friday May BOTM. I really enjoyed it, though I do feel that it was a little too dragged out for me personally. It’ll be interesting to see how the sequel does, as Taylor originally had it as a standalone but has now changed it to a duology. I also really enjoyed Heartstone. I thought it was a fun twist on the classic, Pride and Prejudice. It was groundbreaking or perfect in any sense, but it was an entertaining quick read. I also find myself craving some more dragon books so if you have any recs, please leave them in the comments!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Aftermath: Empire’s End (Star Wars: Aftermath, #3) by Chuck Wendig
  • Ten Thousand Skies Above You (Firebird Trilogy, #2) by Claudia Gray

June begins my Smashing Series Round 2, even though I started 2 days earlier (hey, it happens!). So all month I’ll be catching up or finishing series that I’ve already started. You can read my original post about it HERE. As you can see, I’ve decided to go with 2 sci-fi trilogies to start the month off with. I really enjoyed A Thousand Pieces of You when I read it back in December and I can’t wait to see how the story ends.

Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, #1) by Laini Taylor

Yes, I know… I had hoped to finish this book this past weekend but I just had a whole lot of stuff going on which cut into my reading time. However, I’ve got my fingers crossed to finish it by this weekend! Don’t worry though, it’s really good so that isn’t the issue!

Strange the Dreamer is the story of:

the aftermath of a war between gods and men
a mysterious city stripped of its name
a mythic hero with blood on his hands
a young librarian with a singular dream
a girl every bit as perilous as she is imperiled
alchemy and blood candy, nightmares and godspawn, moths and monsters, friendship and treachery, love and carnage.

Welcome to Weep.

What did you recently finish reading?

I haven’t finished anything since last week, unfortunately.  This should change for next week, thanks to a long weekend! Whoop, whoop!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Heartsone by Elle Katharine White – This is retelling of Pride and Prejudice but with DRAGONS. Yes, you read that right. Yes, I’m pretty damn excited about it.
  • Aftermath: Life Debt (Star Wars: Aftermath, #2) by Chuck Wendig – The second book in Wendig’s trilogy following the defeat of The Empire at the Battle of Endor. I know this series gets a lot of hate due to Wendig’s writing style, but I found the first one enjoyable. It was fun getting follow completely new and different characters.

What books are you currently reading? Have you finished any good ones this week? What’s next on your TBR? Have you read any of the books on my list? If so, what did you think of them?
