My Favorite Books Featuring Strong Female Characters

I’m sure like most of you do, I always enjoy reading a story that features strong and independent female characters. I never fail to feel an intense connection with those types of characters, as I like to think of myself as a fairly strong female as well. Everyone needs to be able to find a sense of strength and inspiration from their books and I think there’s nothing better than getting that from a special character. Long after you may forget what the plot from that book was about, you’ll still be able to remember that character and what they mean to you.

And don’t worry boys, you’ll get your turn soon!

Sadie by Courtney Summers

Sadie is one of the most fascinating characters I’ve ever come across. She will do anything to avenge her sister’s death and I can totally respect that.

A missing girl on a journey of revenge. A Serial―like podcast following the clues she’s left behind. And an ending you won’t be able to stop talking about.

Sadie hasn’t had an easy life. Growing up on her own, she’s been raising her sister Mattie in an isolated small town, trying her best to provide a normal life and keep their heads above water.

But when Mattie is found dead, Sadie’s entire world crumbles. After a somewhat botched police investigation, Sadie is determined to bring her sister’s killer to justice and hits the road following a few meager clues to find him.

When West McCray―a radio personality working on a segment about small, forgotten towns in America―overhears Sadie’s story at a local gas station, he becomes obsessed with finding the missing girl. He starts his own podcast as he tracks Sadie’s journey, trying to figure out what happened, hoping to find her before it’s too late.

On her nineteenth birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Kelsea will need them all to survive a cabal of enemies who will use every weapon—from crimson-caped assassins to the darkest blood magic—to prevent her from wearing the crown.

Despite her royal blood, Kelsea feels like nothing so much as an insecure girl, a child called upon to lead a people and a kingdom about which she knows almost nothing. But what she discovers in the capital will change everything, confronting her with horrors she never imagined. An act of singular daring will throw Kelsea’s kingdom into tumult, unleashing the vengeance of the tyrannical ruler of neighboring Mortmesne: the Red Queen, a sorceress possessed of the darkest magic. Three Dark Crowns (Three Dark Crowns, #1) by Kendare Blake

I will admit that this one takes a bit before it really takes off but once it does..WOAH. It’s dark and twisty in all the best ways.  Also, the sequel was one of my favorite reads of 2017 so it only gets better! I cannot wait to see where the story goes to in the next book.

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

If you haven’t already read this book yet, then I’m not really sure what you’re waiting for. IT IS AWESOME! If way it’s written isn’t really something that you’re into, I’ve heard the audiobook versions are just amazing. And with the finale due to release next month, it’s the perfect time to dive in.

The Dark Days Club (Lady Helen, #1) by Alison Goodman

I’m sure y’all are tired of hearing me gushing over this series by now, but sorry, I refuse to stop! This series is so engrossing and Goodman does the most perfect job of recreating Regency England. Also, the romance is the kind of slow burner that we all love. Trust me, this one’s a winner.

Truthwitch (The Witchlands, #1) by Susan Dennard

This book got so much mixed reviews when it first came out, that I put off picking it up because I was worried that I wouldn’t enjoy it. However, this book turned out to be so much more fun than I thought! If you are someone who wants to see more female friendships in YA, then this book is for you. It’s all about powerful women!

The Kiss of Deception (The Remnant Chronicles, #1) by Mary E. Pearson

I didn’t really have the highest hopes for this book when I first picked it up and then I fell into a month long slump right in the middle of it. However, this series turned out to be one of my all-time favorites. The world is so richly described, that you are immediately transported into it. Also, the romance doesn’t hurt either!

What are some books that you’d recommend to help escape the winter doldrums? Have you read any of the ones on my list? If so, what did you think of them?

Book Review: Defy the Stars (Constellation, #1)

At this point, I’m not even surprised that I loved Claudia Gray’s, Defy the Stars (Constellation, #1)Gray and science fiction go together just like peanut butter and jelly. No lie!

She’s a soldier.

Noemi Vidal is seventeen years old and sworn to protect her planet, Genesis. She’s willing to risk anything—including her own life. To their enemies on Earth, she’s a rebel.

He’s a machine.

Abandoned in space for years, utterly alone, Abel has advanced programming that’s begun to evolve. He wants only to protect his creator, and to be free. To the people of Genesis, he’s an abomination.

Noemi and Abel are enemies in an interstellar war, forced by chance to work together as they embark on a daring journey through the stars. Their efforts would end the fighting for good, but they’re not without sacrifice. The stakes are even higher than either of them first realized, and the more time they spend together, the more they’re forced to question everything they’d been taught was true.

This book is just another example of how accessible Gray’s science fiction writing is. She is able to paint a complete picture of her worlds without bogging down the actual story as she dives into the hard science within those futuristic societies. I find this completely amazing, as she isn’t afraid to actually tackle any scientific explanations that are needed for the plot. She truly is a master at science fiction, there’s no doubt!

Noemi is a complete badass. She’s a soldier who will do anything to save the people she loves and the planet that she calls home. I loved how sassy Noemi was. She’s full of courage and isn’t afraid to do what’s right. It was also really nice to see how she developed throughout the book, learning to acknowledge that there really is no right or wrong side of the war. It was also interesting to see how her relationship grows with Abel as they both learn to work together. Abel is my favorite though. His responses to everyone else are so exact and direct that you think he’s almost joking but he really isn’t. The exchanges between him and Noemi are just so hilarious! They play off of each other so well.

Once upon a time, there was a man as great as the gods…But even the great can tremble with fear..png

I will say that this is a pretty long book. The pacing did take a few dips here and there, as there was a whole lot of ground covered for a series opener. However, I didn’t feel that it really detracted from the overall story, as these small detours do actually move the plot forward. I think that the only reason that it took me more than a couple of days to finish this book was because I was in a bit of mini-slump. So if you’re a little scared off by the page count, don’t worry – it’s worth it, trust me!

Overall, this was such a fun book. It was exciting and the two protagonists have such great chemistry that I probably could’ve read a story where they just sit in an empty room for 400 pages. Gray once again has written a winner that’s left me begging for more. There’s a reason she has become an auto-buy author for me and this book is a perfect example of that. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for an exciting new science fiction series to help ease the pain of The Illuminae Files trilogy coming to an end.

Final Verdict: 5/5 Stars

Have you read Defy the Stars? If so, what did you think of it? Did you like the way the book ended? Did you like Abel and Noemi’s interactions as much as I did?

What are you currently reading?

  • Goliath (Leviathan, #3) by Scott Westerfeld – audiobook
  • The Dark Days Pact (Lady Helen, #2) by Alison Goodman

I swear, I am just as annoyed seeing Goliath still on my list as you are. I haven’t made any progress on this audiobook at all over the past few weeks. Hopefully that’ll change soon! As for The Dark Days Pact… Yeah, I’m still obsessed with this series. It’s incredibly detailed about life in Regency England, while still completely engaging you with the suspense and action. More people need to read this and join my obsession!!!

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Defy the Stars (Constellation, #1) by Claudia Gray – 5/5 stars, review to come
  • The Girl at Midnight (The Girl at Midnight, #1) by Melissa Grey – 3/5 stars, review to come

I think The Girl at Midnight was just mediocre. I really enjoyed the characters but I kind of got a bunch of vibes from a few different books. I think it was lacking just a bit on the originality side. However, I do plan on continuing with the story to see if it becomes more of its own thing as the story goes on.

Defy the Stars is just simply awesome. Claudia Gray can do no wrong, seriously! I really don’t know if I can wait for the second book to come out in the spring or I might die. AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Daughter of the Pirate King (Daughter of the Pirate King, #1) by Tricia Levenseller
  • Zodiac (Zodiac, #1) by Romina Russell – Hype or Like Friday BOTM

Can I just say that I’m super excited to pick up both of these books, because I am. Like really excited. #nochill

What are you currently reading?

  • Defy the Stars (Constellation, #1) by Claudia Gray – physical book
  • Goliath (Leviathan, #3) by Scott Westerfeld – audiobook

I’ll be honest that I’ve been too busy at work this past week to listen to Goliath any. OOPS! But I do hope to finish it by Friday. We shall see though!

And due to the holiday weekend with family and friends in town, I never had time to really pick up Defy the Stars. Luckily, things have finally settled back down and so I plan to really dive into this one today!

What did you recently finish reading?

  • The Girl at Midnight (The Girl at Midnight, #1) by Melissa Grey – physical book, 3/5 stars

I enjoyed this book for the most part, though I never felt really sucked into the story. I liked the humor and characters, but the plot wasn’t the most original. I’ll chalk this one up to it being a really young debut author and so I’ll continue with the series to see if the overall writing improves.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Dark Days Pact (Lady Helen, #2) by Alison Goodman
  • Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1) by Neal Shusterman

  • The Girl at Midnight (The Girl at Midnight, #1) by Melissa Grey – physical book

Currently working my way through Defy the Stars and am really enjoying it! Why is Claudia Gray just soooo amazing at writing science fiction? Gah, I’m obsessed.

One of these days I will finish Goliath, I promise! Work has just been a tad busy the past few days so I haven’t really had any time to listen to it… but eventually! It is a really fun series and I’m a tad sad to finish it.

Started buddy reading The Girl at Midnight with Britt a few days ago. This is quite an intriguing story and I’m really interested in seeing where it goes. I’m also rooting for a little hate to love romance to happen. IT BETTER!

What did you recently finish reading?

  • City of Saints & Thieves by Natalie C. Anderson – Hype or Like Friday BOTM, 4/5 stars
  • Ross Poldark (Poldark, #1) by Winston Graham – physical book, 4/5 stars

I have to say that I really enjoyed both of these books. City of Saints & Thieves was a great quick read and I loved how it was set in Eastern Africa. It touched on some real issues happening in the DRC and I loved that. Definitely recommend this book!

Ross Poldark was just as good as I thought it would be. I’m kind of obsessed with the tv show and so I’ve been dying to finally pick up the book. I’m so happy that it didn’t disappoint and I plan to continue and finish out this series.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Dark Days Pact (Lady Helen, #2) by Alison Goodman
  • Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1) by Neal Shusterman

Can’t wait to start both of these books!
