  • The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams – audiobook
  • Jade Legacy (Green Bone Saga, #3) by Fonda Lee – physical book

I’m less than halfway through The Reading List and I’m already in love. Books about books are always good, but something about this one actually evokes the emotions and connections you make as a reader. I can’t explain it. I haven’t even finished this one yet and I already want to recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Jade Legacy is obviously the best. At this point, I truly think Fonda Lee can do no wrong. This series is so unique and interesting and I love every second of it. My only regret is that I hadn’t done a re-read before diving into this finale. There’s so much I’ve forgotten!

I’ve had a really great reading month in March so far. We can say that I’ve been too busy reading and that’s why I haven’t been posting lately, HAHA! But it’s been a bit of a mixed bag in the books I’ve picked up. I was really disappointed by House of Hollow and Stalking Jack the Ripper. I have THOUGHTS about Sky and Breath (probably unpopular ones honestly), but I did enjoy Firekeeper’s Daughter and Luxe.

I’m very close to finishing up Our American Friend and boy, has it been an interesting ride. My feelings with this one have been all over the place, so I’m really interested in seeing how it ends. I should have the review posted up either later this week or next. But if you’re at all interested in historical fiction set during the Cold War, I recommend picking this one up. It just released yesterday!

I have barely started House of Sky and Breath and Age of Witches, so not much to report on them yet. However, the prologue for Sky and Breath was crazy. I can already tell this one is going to be amazing!

  • The Merciful Crow (Merciful Crow, #1) by Margaret Owen – ebook
  • House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1) by Sarah J. Maas – audiobook, reread

Earth and Blood was a reread for me and I’m sure y’all are more than aware of my feelings on it by now. But if not, just know that I 100% believe it to be Maas’ best work so far… YES, EVEN BETTER THAN ACOTAR!

And what can I say about The Merciful Crow? Well, I definitely loved it. Yes, it did get a little repetitive in the middle for a bit but it was still a fun ride. Owen is quickly joining another Margaret on my auto-buy author list! (Margaret Rogerson is the other one, because obviously. She’s flawless!)

My Book Outlet Book Haul

I finally got book buying itch recently during Book Outlet’s July sale and so I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a nice little box full of goodies. If you aren’t familiar with Book Outlet, it’s an online bookseller that sells new and used book at serious discounts. They focus on selling overstock, bargain bin, etc. books so you’re always getting a really great deal. They also have special sales all of the time which lowers their crazy prices even further. I think I usually average around $7 for a brand new hardback… Yep, you read that right! The only downfall to Book Outlet is that they currently only ship to Canada and the U.S. But if you are able, I highly recommend checking them out!

Decline and Fall  by Evelyn Waugh

This is apparently an English classic and humorous tale about 1920’s high society. I had never heard of until recently but it does sound like a lot of fun!

Tilly and the Bookwanderers (Pages & Co., #1)  by Anna James

I have been on the biggest middle grade kick recently and this book sounds like it has everything that I love about that genre. Whimsical fun set amongst classic children’s novels coming to life sounds like the makings of a new favorite to me.

The Girl and the Witch’s Garden  by Erin Bowman

I find Bowman to be such a good author. She had me hooked from her debut novel so I’m really excited what she can do with her first foray into middle grade.

I feel like I’ve put off this award-winning novel for far too long.

Vampires Never Get Old: Tales with Fresh Bite  edited by Zoraida Cordova & Natalie C. Parker

I will fully admit to still loving any story to do with vampires. I feel like there’s something that will never not be badass about those bloodsuckers. I also know that Schwab’s story is currently being filmed as a new show for Netflix, so you know I have to check out the original before it arrives!

From Unseen Fire (Aven Cycle, #1)  by Cass Morris

I am very much into a fantastical alternate history version of Ancient Rome. Reviews say this book focuses a lot of the plot on political intrigue which makes me very excited!

Another middle grade that I’ve heard some pretty good things about!

The Luxe (The Luxe, #1)  by Anna Godbersen

I actually read this series back when I was in high school but I don’t remember much about it except that I really enjoyed it. I plan on doing a buddy reread for it with Geronimo Reads soon to see if we both still enjoy it this second time around… Controversial Opinion (for me): I actually prefer the original covers with the dresses, as they definitely reflected the Gilded Age setting much more.

This sounds like such a funny, weird and quirky story that would be nice palate cleanser from my usual fantasy novels. Plus, who doesn’t enjoy a novel set in Paris?

I read the first book about Jane Grey but haven’t read the second one on Jane Eyre but I do own it, so I hope to pick them both up soon to finish out the series.

I’ve read some of Colleen’s other books and enjoyed them so I’m glad to pick up this one. It’s another Ancient Rome setting.. I’m sort of sensing a theme here. Haha!

So no progress on The Guncle over the past week. I really thought I’d get around to listening to it over the weekend but just never found the time. Hopefully soon though!

I only just started the other two books today so I don’t have many thoughts on them just yet but I am very excited for them!

What did you recently finish reading?

  • The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow – ebook
  • The Broken Lands (The Boneshaker, #0.5) by Kate Milford – ebook

I want to just rave and rave about Kate Milford. I only just recently learned of her and started with her middle grade novel, Greenglass House. I want to rave about her work now! This book was even more amazing if that’s possible. It was dark and creepy but also heartwarming. I can’t even explain it but I loved it so much. I think Milford has solidified her place as an insta-buy author for me.

January was also a good book. It did have a really slow start for me (partially why I sat it aside for over 6 months) but I am glad that I continued with it. There are some really great quotes in this book that I would even consider tattooing on my body… FOR REAL.

  • Vow of Thieves (Dance of Thieves, #2) by Mary E. Pearson – physical book
  • The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune – audiobook

I am zipping through Vow of Thieves and am LOVING it. This sequel is nonstop action and intrigue so far. Pearson is killing it with this one and I am super excited to see how it all ends. I also kind of like how the two main characters have been split up in this book. It’s brought a new look to the story, one that was really needed I think.

I haven’t fully started listening to House in the Cerulean Sea yet but will get to it later today. I’ve only heard amazing things about it so I’m ready!

  • The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy, #1) by S.A. Chakraborty – audiobook, reread
  • Aurora Burning (Aurora Cycle, #2) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff – physical book

I enjoyed all of these books for the most part, though I do feel a little letdown with The King of Crows. It was a finale that didn’t quite live up to the rest of the series which is always a bummer. I felt like the buildup took a really long time and then the climax was over very quickly, and lacked some of creepiness of the previous books.

  • Now Entering Addamsville by Francesca Zappia – audiobook

I’m currently in the middle of both of these books and enjoying them. I will say that I had no idea that Now Entering Addamsville was a paranormal mystery but I am so into it. I feel like maybe I should read more of those now. Also, The Oracle Year is really interesting. I’m loving seeing how all different sides are viewing these predictions and the man behind them. It seems very real on what it would be like if it truly happened in real life.

I absolutely loved The Devil’s Thief, enjoyed Tuesday Mooney, and truly disliked Artemis. I enjoyed the plot, but felt the characters were very flat and Weir’s writing style is truly pedantic. That man has very high opinions of his scientific knowledge and loves showing it off… It makes me want to hurl.

Currently Reading

  • Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts by Kate Racculia – audiobook
  • The Devil’s Thief (The Last Magician, #2) by Lisa Maxwell – physical book
  • Artemis by Andy Weir – physical book

I’m a little over halfway through Artemis. And while I’m enjoying it, I hate the extensive science lessons that Weir thinks we need to have every other paragraph. There’s a reason I didn’t read The Martian, dude. Please save your need to sound really intelligent for someone else.

I’m also a 1/4 of the way through The Devil’s Thief and loving it so far. I like how the different POVs are giving us insight into what’s happening from completely different perspectives. There’s a lot going on but I’m enjoying every second of it.

I hope to finish Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts by tomorrow. It’s a fun story and has turned into something a little different than what I was expecting. I think this is actually about grief and that was something I had no idea was even going to be a topic when I first picked it up. I like that but I much prefer the game and mystery aspect more… Sorry!

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Things in Jars by Jess Kidd – audiobook

Things in Jars was such a good book. It was entertaining and interesting and I never knew what was going to happen next. I highly recommend the audiobook version for it as well. The narrator did such an awesome job with all of the voices and accents. You won’t regret it!

Descendant of the Crane was a little bit of a letdown. It was an interesting story and I loved the actual plot, but I think the world-building could have used a bit more exploration. It didn’t feel complete to me and there wasn’t enough information given to understand it. The ending left a strong possibility for a sequel and so I’m hoping that those issues could be remedied with the second book.

  • Descendant of the Crane by Joan He – physical book
  • Things in Jars by Jess Kidd – audiobook

I actually should finish both of these books up today. I’m enjoying both, though I think I prefer Things in Jars overall. I’m still making my mind up on how I feel about Descendant of the Crane. There are just some things about the world-building that don’t quite make sense to me and I find myself getting a little confused at times. Hopefully things will all make sense in the end! But Things in Jars is truly delightful – a little creepy, unique, and full of interesting characters.

  • The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee – audiobook
  • Dance of Thieves (Dance of Thieves, #1) by Mary E. Pearson – physical book
  • House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book

Words cannot describe how much I loved all three of these books. Crescent City ended up being everything I had hoped it would and more. Maas knocked it out of the park with her first adult fantasy. Dance of Thieves was sooo good. I literally cannot wait to pick up the sequel to find out what will happen next! And The Downstairs Girl was very unique for a historical fiction. It showed us a time that’s hardly shown in novels, as well as painting it from a different perspective. I definitely recommend it!
