August/September Wrap-Up: Reviews, Reading Challenges, etc.

I’m ashamed to say that it’s been so long since I’ve actually finished a book. I started Tower of Dawn when I left on vacation at the start of September and still have not finished it. Though, I’m only about 50 pages away from the end so fingers crossed I can finish it tonight! But anywho…. it seems as though my little reading slump bled over into a blogging slump as well this past month. So I’d like to apologize for the lack of posts during September and I promise that things should get back to normal this month. And holy smoke y’all, it’s already October!!!! We are officially into my favorite season and that means Thanksgiving is basically next weekend and then Christmas in two weeks. (I mean, obviously not really but it sure feels that way!) I may or may not already be hyped for 25 Days of Christmas on “Freeform”. I could literally watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas 100 times in a row and never get bored. #NoShame

How did your reading go during August/September? Were you able to read all of the books on your TBR? Did you read any new favorites? What book did you like the least? Did you do anything fun or interesting? Did you fall into a reading slump like I did? What do you plan on reading in October?

What are you currently reading?

  • Lion Heart (Scarlet, #3) by A.C. Gaughen – audiobook
  • Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen – audiobook
  • Smoke and Iron (The Great Library, #4) by Rachel Caine – physical book

Finally started back to listening to Lion Heart again today. I plan to finish this one up before the end of the day, but we’ll see.

I haven’t listened much to Orphan Monster Spy lately as I’ve been watching Glee while on the treadmill instead of listening to my audiobooks. I feel like I should be ashamed by this but I’m not. So there.

I’m less than 50 pages into Smoke and Iron but I can tell that I’m really going to enjoy this book. We are finally getting Khalila’s point of view and I’m so excited! I love how this series continues to expand and I feel like it’s very close to reach its climax. I cannot wait to see how this all ends!

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Frozen Tides (Falling Kingdoms, #4) by Morgan Rhodes – physical book
  • A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3.1) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book

Obviously I loved Frozen Tides, as this series just keeps getting better and better. The plot continues to get even more intricate and exciting.  Also, holy moly plot twist!!! That ending was insane and I loved it. I cannot wait to start the next book and find out what’s going to happen now.

I enjoyed A Court of Frost and Starlight. It was my first novella and I think it did a good job, as it less based around a plotline and focused more on bridging the original trilogy with the upcoming follow-up series. It was great to see where the characters are at now that the war is over and how they’re each coping with that. Also, Nesta is still a total bitch and I still completely love it. So happy that this next series will have her point of view!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Sightwitch (The Witchlands, #0.5) by Susan Dennard – physical book
  • Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik – physical ARC
  • Renegades (Renegades, #1) by Marissa Meyer – physical book

Book Review: A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3.1)

This was actually the first novella that I’ve ever read and I was pleasantly surprised. A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3.1) by Sarah J. Maas was a fun read and makes me more open to picking up other novellas in the future.

P.S. This will be a really short review. 😉

Hope warms the coldest night.

Feyre, Rhys, and their close-knit circle of friends are still busy rebuilding the Night Court and the vastly-changed world beyond. But Winter Solstice is finally near, and with it, a hard-earned reprieve.

Yet even the festive atmosphere can’t keep the shadows of the past from looming. As Feyre navigates her first Winter Solstice as High Lady, she finds that those dearest to her have more wounds than she anticipated–scars that will have far-reaching impact on the future of their Court.

So I guess the most obvious point, is that this novella doesn’t dive far into any actual plot, but instead focuses on the different characters and how they’re each trying to recover from the war. I actually really liked that. It was nice to get alternate POVs from some of the different characters, especially Cassian and Mor. I’m hearing that the upcoming follow-up series will continue with following multiple characters and I am totally okay with that. As much as I love Feyre and Rhys, it’ll be nice to get to experience new adventures with some of the others. I’m especially excited to follow Nesta some, as the preview section at the end of the book was from her POV. I’m so excited my main bitch is getting to tell her story!

Aelin galathynius, queen of terrasen, knew the time would soon come to prove just how much she'd bleed for Eril

I will say that I think Maas is getting better about actually bringing a new maturity level to her books with each new release. Instead of mostly using sex to elevate from YA to NA (though it’s still there so don’t get too excited), she’s also shedding light on some deeper themes as well. While heavier themes have been examined in previous books, I feel like they will really come to the forefront in this next series. Maybe I’m being overly hopeful, but it’s nice to try and stay positive, right?

I think my one complaint about this novella was that we didn’t get any a chapter from Azriel’s point of view. He’s one of my favorite characters in this series and it would be fascinating to see things from his perspective and learn more about his story. However, I think Maas has relegated him to being the mysterious character and we will never truly get to know him… And that’s a damn shame.

Final Verdict: 4/5 Stars

Have you read A Court of Frost and Starlight? If so, what did you think of it? Which point of view was your favorite? What do you hope to see in the next series? What do you think about novellas in general?

What are you currently reading?

  • Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen – audiobook
  • Lion Heart (Scarlet, #3) by A.C. Gaughen – audiobook
  • Frozen Tides (Falling Kingdoms, #4) by Morgan Rhodes – physical book

If you’re wondering if I’ve listened any more to Lion Heart since last week, you’ll be disappointed because I definitely haven’t. I only have about two hours left on it and so I hope to finish it soon. I’m just tired of all mushy love crap, okay?!

I barely started on Orphan Monster Spy yesterday while I was at the gym, so I don’t have much of an opinion yet. The only thing I’ve noticed is the writing style and I can’t decide whether or not I like it. However, I’m still only on the first chapter and so there’s plenty of time for it to change.

I’m about 50 pages into Frozen Tides and of course I’m enjoying it so far. I had forgotten a bit about what happened in the previous book but it’s slowly coming back to me. I will say that Magnus is back to being a butthead and I ain’t happy about it.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand – audiobook, 3/5 stars
  • Titans by Leila Meacham – physical book, 4/5 stars

Let me just say that I was disappointed by The Afterlife of Holly Chase. I found it to be fairly repetitive and the middle portion was extremely slow paced. There also wasn’t a whole lot of details on Operation Scrooge which is what I was most interested in. I did however enjoy the ending which bumped my overall rating up to 3 stars. I think this book could’ve used some more editing and maybe cut about 50 pages from it.

Titans was pretty good, though I definitely don’t think it measures up to Roses. I loved the characters and really enjoyed diving into the different families lives. However, I think Nathan was pushed to wayside as the book moved along and I really would’ve enjoyed getting to learn more about him.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • Renegades (Renegades, #1) by Marissa Meyer – physical book
  • A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3.1) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book
  • Sightwitch (The Witchlands, #0.5) by Susan Dennard – physical book

After tackling the behemoth that is Renegades, I figured it’s probably a good time to focus on some of my novellas. I’ve heard good things about all three books and so I can’t wait to dive into them.

15 Books I Want to Read this Summer

After adding my haul from BookCon to my bookshelves last week, I noticed how many books that I haven’t gotten around to reading yet. There’s quite a few that I really want to get to sooner rather than later. So I decided to post a little bit of a personal summer TBR list. Keep your fingers crossed that I can stick to this, haha!

  • Trail of Lightnight (The Sixth World, #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse
    • So excited that I was able to snag an ARC of this one at BookCon. An #ownvoices story about a Native American girl who is a monster hunter after the apocalypse. Ummmm, HELL YES!
  • And I Darken (And I Darken, #1) by Kiersten White
    • I actually read the first chapter of this one a while back and was really intrigued. I think this is one series that I will have no trouble devouring. I already have the sequel and with the finale coming out later this month, it’s the perfect time to pick it up!
  • Saints & Misfits by S.K. Ali
    • I’ve been meaning to get to this one for a while now and finally have enough time to pick it up. It’s probably what I’ll end up reading next. I’ve heard great things about it and I’m also trying to mentally prepare myself for the heavy content.
  • Tower of Dawn (Throne of Glass, #6) by Sarah J. Maas
    • Why have I put off picking this one up for so long? I wish I had a good reason for you but I don’t. I think maybe it’s because this book focuses on Chaol and he had turned into such a jerk that I wasn’t quite ready to deal with him again. However, it seems that this book has exceeded almost everyone’s expectations and so I think it’s time to see for myself.
  • Frozen Tides (Falling Kingdoms, #4) by Morgan Rhodes
    • I’m kind of obsessed with this series right now and so I can’t put off the next book any longer. Also, still totally waiting for Magnus and Cleo to get together. It better happen!!!! #greatestslowburnever
  • Defy the Worlds (Constellation, #2) by Claudia Gray
    • Basically the first book was like the greatest and most fun science fiction that I’ve read in a while and I’m dying to see what’ll happen next to my favorite little cupcakes. Oh man, how I’ve missed my favorite little A.I., Abel.
  • A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3.1) by Sarah J. Maas
    • Because I’ve been meaning to get to this one for the longest time. I even preordered it and yet, I still haven’t picked it up. Not for much longer though!
  • Sightwitch (The Witchlands, #0.5) by Susan Dennard
    • I did the same thing with this book as I did with ACOFAS. I’m not usually one for novellas but I really think this book will be a good addition to the series, as it introduces us to different areas and characters.
  • Middlemarch by George Eliot
    • I’ve had this book on my shelves for years now. I’ve actually tried starting it a few times, but end up quitting after just a couple of pages because I worry about how long it will take me to finish. However, I plan on ending that this summer! It’s time I stop worrying about how many books I can complete in a month and just focus on enjoying what I’m reading.
  • The Last Magician (The Last Magician, #1) by Lisa Maxwell
    • I’ve heard some amazing things about this book ever since it first came out. And now that I have a copy, I think it’s time to give it a whirl. Based on the synopsis alone, I’d say that this one is probably going to be hit with me too.
  • The Wood by Chelsea Bobulski
    • I’ll admit that this was a bit of a cover-buy for me. However, the synopsis sounds extremely intriguing as well. I think it’ll be a nice change of pace to what I normally read.
  • Smoke and Iron (The Great Library, #4) by Rachel Caine
    • I have been anxiously waiting for the release of this book, ever since I finished the previous one. This series has been so much fun to read, with such a unique premise and diverse cast of characters. If you haven’t read it, I definitely recommend it!
  • Fuse (Pure, #2) by Julianna Baggott
    • I just really need to finish this trilogy soon. I can’t believe I’ve been putting it off for so long!
  • Love and Luck by Jenna Evans Welch
    • I really enjoyed Welch’s previous novel and so when I found out she was writing a companion book to it set in Ireland, I was hooked. Ireland is my favorite place in the world and holds a special place in my heart, so I cannot wait to dive into a book set there, especially one with a little bit of romance!
  • Titans by Leila Meacham
    • I love Meacham’s writing. She does a great job of bringing the history of Texas to life in her books. This one sounds even better than her previous ones and so I’m really looking forward to diving into it. Turn of the century Fort Worth? A boy and girl from two different worlds? Sign me up!

Have you read any of the books on my summer TBR? If so, what did you think of them? Are there any particular books that you really want to read this summer?

What are you currently reading?

  • Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys – audiobook
  • War Storm (Red Queen, #4) by Victoria Aveyard – physical book

I’m almost done with Out of the Easy after getting a lot of time to listen to it the past couple of days. I’ll hopefully finish it up today if we aren’t too busy at work. This book is really good and I love the bit of mystery in it. It also makes me want to go back to New Orleans really soon!

I’m almost halfway through War Storm. It took me a bit to really get into it, as I didn’t remember anything that happened in the last book… OOPS! However, things are finally clicking for me and the plot has picked up as well. I’m hoping to finish this by this weekend (it’s seriously a hefty book, y’all!), but since I have family coming in for the holiday weekend, we’ll see if I have time to pick it up. I’m nervously excited to see how this series ends!

What did you recently finish reading?

Nothing since last week… Damn you, War Storm!

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3.1) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book
  • Defy the Worlds (Constellation, #2) by Claudia Gray – physical book
  • Saints and Misfits by S.K Ali – physical book

I’m adding Defy the Worlds to my TBR because I finally bought a copy and it’s killing me to put off picking up any longer than I have to. I miss this world and need to dive back into it immediately! Also, as has been my plan for a while now, I hope to dive into ACOFAS and Saints and Misfits before I leave for NYC and BookCon next week. Ahhhhhh!!!

What are you currently reading?

  • Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys – audiobook
  • War Storm (Red Queen, #4) by Victoria Aveyard – physical book

Still working my way through Out of the Easy. It’s been crazy at work this past week which has cut into my listening time. Hopefully I can get back into it soon, as I’m really enjoying this story and I can’t wait to dive more into this mystery!

I actually haven’t started War Storm yet. I finished up Furyborn right before I went to sleep last night and so I didn’t have any time to pick it up. I’m super excited and also a little nervous to see how this series is going to end. Maven has become the new Darkling for me and I’m almost sad to find out what happens to him. Because I stand by the fact that the Darkling should’ve had redemption! #stillbitter #justiceforMaven 😉

What did you recently finish reading?

  • Winter (The Lunar Chronicles, #4) by Marissa Meyer – physical book
  • Furyborn (Empirium, #1) by Claire Legrand – physical ARC

I have to say that I had a very enjoyable reading week. I finished up Winter, which was a really good ending to the Lunar Chronicles series. I do think there was some parts that could’ve been cut out of the story but other than that it was a fun read.

I also binged Furyborn in just a few days. Y’all, I went into this book thinking that it was going to be crap and unoriginal. I WAS WRONG! This book was exciting from start to finish and I am so obsessed now. The hype is real with this one and I don’t think I’m going to survive a full year until the second book is released. I will definitely be purchasing the final copy of this one! Also, please note that I would consider this to be more NA than YA. So if you don’t prefer cursing and sexual content in your books, just know that both are prevalent in this one.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3.1) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book
  • Saints and Misfits by S.K. Ali – physical book

It’s probably time to mix in some contemporary with my reading. While it’s not a genre that I normally gravitate towards, I’ve heard really good things about this book! I’m also kind of obsessed with this cover. The girl just looks so chic!

ACOFAS is going to be my first novella… EVER! I actually purchased Sightwitch when it was released as well but I haven’t picked it up yet. However, it’s on my TBR for this month as well, so I guess you could say that I’m about to crash into the world of novellas. Hopefully both of these live up to my expectations!

My May TBR!

I don’t really know how well I’m going to stick to my TBR for this month but I’m going to really try. I’ve been having a tough time trying to figure out what I read next after I’ve finished the last couple of books, so I’m hoping this will help me focus a little. I’m going for a good mix of books so I don’t get too bored with any one genre. Of course, I am a mood reader so we all know how that goes. Fingers crossed that it works! As I’m also going to NYC for BookCon at the end of the month, I’m really hoping that I can get to all of these before I leave. A girl can dream, right?

May TBR

  • Saints and Misfits by S.K. Ali – physical book
  • A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, 3.1) by Sarah J. Maas – physical book
  • Ace of Shades (The Shadow Game, #1) by Amanda Foody – physical book
  • Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys – currently reading, audiobook
