As I’ve mentioned quite a few times recently, one of my goals for 2018 is to catch up or finish series that I’ve already started. I mean, there are soooo many amazing series that I tend to just add to my pile every time I pick up a new book basically. Can we just not get any good standalone fantasy or science fiction novels anymore?! Anyways, here are some sequels coming out this year that I’m most excited about…
Smoke and Iron (The Great Library, #4) by Rachel Caine
The opening moves of a deadly game have begun. Jess Brightwell has put himself in direct peril, with only his wits and skill to aid him in a game of cat and mouse with the Archivist Magister of the Great Library. With the world catching fire, and words printed on paper the spark that lights rebellion, it falls to smugglers, thieves, and scholars to save a library thousands of years in the making…if they can stay alive long enough to outwit their enemies.
War Storm (Red Queen, #4) by Victoria Aveyard
VICTORY COMES AT A PRICE.
Mare Barrow learned this all too well when Cal’s betrayal nearly destroyed her. Now determined to protect her heart—and secure freedom for Reds and newbloods like her—Mare resolves to overthrow the kingdom of Norta once and for all… starting with the crown on Maven’s head.
But no battle is won alone, and before the Reds may rise as one, Mare must side with the boy who broke her heart in order to defeat the boy who almost broke her. Cal’s powerful Silver allies, alongside Mare and the Scarlet Guard, prove a formidable force. But Maven is driven by an obsession so deep, he will stop at nothing to have Mare as his own again, even if it means demolishing everything—and everyone—in his path.
War is coming, and all Mare has fought for hangs in the balance. Will victory be enough to topple the Silver kingdoms? Or will the little lightning girl be forever silenced?
In the epic conclusion to Victoria Aveyard’s stunning series, Mare must embrace her fate and summon all her power… for all will be tested, but not all will survive.
Reaper at the Gates (An Ember in the Ashes, #3) by Sabaa Tahir
Beyond the Empire and within it, the threat of war looms ever larger.
The Blood Shrike, Helene Aquilla, is assailed on all sides. Emperor Marcus, haunted by his past, grows increasingly unstable, while the Commandant capitalizes on his madness to bolster her own power. As Helene searches for a way to hold back the approaching darkness, her sister’s life and the lives of all those in the Empire hang in the balance.
Far to the east, Laia of Serra knows the fate of the world lies not in the machinations of the Martial court, but in stopping the Nightbringer. But while hunting for a way to bring him down, Laia faces unexpected threats from those she hoped would aid her, and is drawn into a battle she never thought she’d have to fight.
And in the land between the living and the dead, Elias Veturius has given up his freedom to serve as Soul Catcher. But in doing so, he has vowed himself to an ancient power that will stop at nothing to ensure Elias’s devotion—even at the cost of his humanity.
Obsidio (The Illuminae Files, #3) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza—but who knows what they’ll find seven months after the invasion?
Meanwhile, Kady’s cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza’s ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys—an old flame from Asha’s past—reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict.
With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heros will fall, and hearts will be broken.
Legendary (Caraval, #2) by Stephanie Garber
A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.
After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.
The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister’s. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval…the games have only just begun.
Restore Me (Shatter Me, #4) by Tahereh Mafi
Juliette Ferrars thought she’d won. She took over Sector 45, was named the new Supreme Commander, and now has Warner by her side. But she’s still the girl with the ability to kill with a single touch—and now she’s got the whole world in the palm of her hand. When tragedy hits, who will she become? Will she be able to control the power she wields and use it for good?
My Plain Jane (The Lady Janies, #2) by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodie Meadows
You may think you know the story. After a miserable childhood, penniless orphan Jane Eyre embarks on a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester. Despite their significant age gap (!) and his uneven temper (!!), they fall in love—and, Reader, she marries him. (!!!)
Or does she?
Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Brontë, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights.
Daughter of the Siren Queen (Daughter of the Pirate King, #2) by Tricia Levenseller
Alosa’s mission is finally complete. Not only has she recovered all three pieces of the map to a legendary hidden treasure, but the pirates who originally took her captive are now prisoners on her ship. Still unfairly attractive and unexpectedly loyal, first mate Riden is a constant distraction, but now he’s under her orders. And she takes great comfort in knowing that the villainous Vordan will soon be facing her father’s justice.
When Vordan exposes a secret her father has kept for years, Alosa and her crew find themselves in a deadly race with the feared Pirate King. Despite the danger, Alosa knows they will recover the treasure first . . . after all, she is the daughter of the Siren Queen.
Iron Gold (Red Rising, #4) by Pierce Brown
They call him father, liberator, warlord, Reaper. But he feels a boy as he falls toward the pale blue planet, his armor red, his army vast, his heart heavy. It is the tenth year of war and the thirty-second of his life.
A decade ago, Darrow was the hero of the revolution he believed would break the chains of the Society. But the Rising has shattered everything: Instead of peace and freedom, it has brought endless war. Now he must risk everything he has fought for on one last desperate mission. Darrow still believes he can save everyone, but can he save himself?
And throughout the worlds, other destinies entwine with Darrow’s to change his fate forever:
A young Red girl flees tragedy in her refugee camp and achieves for herself a new life she could never have imagined.
An ex-soldier broken by grief is forced to steal the most valuable thing in the galaxy—or pay with his life.
And Lysander au Lune, the heir in exile to the sovereign, wanders the stars with his mentor, Cassius, haunted by the loss of the world that Darrow transformed, and dreaming of what will rise from its ashes.
What are some sequels coming out this year that you’re most excited about? Are there any series that you need to finish or catch up on?
I am so hyped for so many of the sequels you included in this post. I LOVED My Plain Jane because it was similar to My Lady Jane in terms of its humour and I am itching for a reread!

I know, right?! This year is going to be a great year for sequels! I didn’t even include some of the ones coming out in the fall that haven’t had cover reveals or exact release dates set yet… Ahhhhh, that makes me so happy to hear! I absolutely loved My Lady Jane and was hoping that My Plain Jane lives up to it. So glad you enjoyed it!

TOTALLY. Like, I wasn’t a huge fan of Glass Sword and I thought King’s Cage had some redeeming qualities. I am just excited to reach the end of the series!

I’m looking forward to Marc Lawrence’s Grey Sister.
And while it’s not a sequel, there is a new Stephen King book releasing later this year. I always look forward to new stories from King.

Oh, good choice! I still haven’t read Red Sister yet but it’s sitting on my shelf right now! I probably will wait closer until Grey Sister is released before picking it up.
I have only ever read one Stephen King book. I know he’s really beloved but I’m not one for horror stories. I hope you enjoy his next release though!

I’m so excited for War Storm as well! It seems like that series has been building up for so long and I want to see where it all goes. I’m looking forward to Caraval’s sequel as well, but a bit more hesitant, just because I’m not sure where it’ll go and I thought the first could have easily been a standalone. It’s going to be such a good reading year though!

Yeah, after the way King’s Cage ended, I’ve been really excited to see how this finale goes! I’m really hoping that it ties everything up nicely! I’m also really excited for Legendary because Legend was my favorite character in Caraval, even though he was never really there. Haha!

Thanks! Yeah, it’ll be very interesting to see how Garber expands on the world in the sequel. Hopefully it’s just as good as the first book!

Yeah, I didn’t either until this 4th book got announced last year. I’m going to have to reread all of the previous books because I don’t remember anything since it’s been so long, haha.
