WWW Wednesday – October 18th, 2017

Welcome to WWW Wednesday which is currently being hosted by Sam @ Taking On A World of Words. It’s really just a place to do little update on what all you’ve been reading lately. Anyone is welcome to join, just leave a link to your post in the comments and be sure to give the appropriate credit to Sam!

The Three W’s are:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

  • One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus – physical book
  • Stars Over Clear Lake by Loretta Ellsworth – audiobook

I have to say that I’m really enjoyed One of Us is Lying so far. I’m almost getting a murder mystery version of The Breakfast Club from it, and I love that movie. I’ve heard good things about this one so I hope I continue to enjoy it!

I’m not very far into Stars Over Clear Lake but I like it so far. I always enjoy a good historical fiction story, especially one set during WWII. I’m expecting that my heart will be broken by the end of it.

What did you recently finish reading?

  • A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge – audiobook, 2/5 stars
  • Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody – 5/5 stars, Review
  • The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter by Theodora Goss – 5/5 stars, Hype or Like Friday BOTM

I had a really good reading week, finally finishing A Face Like Glass, after what feels like forever. Seriously, I was afraid this damn story would never end. SOOOOOO LONG. But other than that, I sped through my two physical books and loved them both. I’m really looking forward to the next books from both authors. I think I was most surprised at how funny and engaging Alchemist’s Daughter was. The writing style was just lovely.

What do you think you’ll read next?

  • The Child Thief by Brom
  • The Dark Days Club (Lady Helen, #1) by Alison Goodman

I plan to continue on with my Halloween Read-a-thon TBR with my next books. Once I get through these, I’ll only be one book away from completing my October TBR. I hope that these two books are engaging enough for me to finish them up fairly quickly so I can fit that last book in before the end of the month!

What are you currently reading? Did you finish any good books this week? What other books do you have on your TBR? Have you read any of the ones on my list? If so, what did you think of them?

  1. I have totally bussed right past Halloween reads this year. I’m kinda sad about that, but I also love that I’m checking books off my NetGalley load. Stars Over Clear Lake definitely looks like it will break your heart. A lot of my students over the years also like the WWII time period; the boys want to read about the war, and the girls want to read stories like Anne Frank and Number the Stars. One of Us Is Lying is also verrrrrry intriguing to me. A Breakfast Club murder mystery? Perfect! Happy reading! Have a great week!

    1. I usually only pick up one or two during October, but planned my whole TBR around it this month thanks to the Halloween Read-a-thon. It’s been a lot of fun too! Yes, Stars is giving my heart all kinds of feels right now. I just know that it’s going to be shattered by the end… I definitely recommend One of Us is Lying right now. I just hope the ending lives up to the rest of it!

  2. I haven’t read One of Us Lying yet but I’ve heard great things about it. I hope you enjoy it! I really want to love The Dark Days Club but the pacing of the book was too slow for my taste. I hope you like it.
I recently finished Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco and it was pretty good. It’s a sequel to Stalking Jack the ripper. I’m currently reading The Last Burning Star by Caitlin Sangster. I’ve completed 20 percent of the book and so far, it was great. As for my next read, I’m planning to read Haven by Mary Lindsey.

Hope you have a great day and Happy reading! 🙂

    1. I’m really enjoying it so far. There’s so many different side stories that affect the overall mystery, which I love. Keeps things interesting!… Ah, I was a little worried that the pacing might be slow for The Dark Days Club, just because I haven’t really seen anyone ever talk about it. I hope I enjoy it though!… Oh, I’ve been wanting to read that series. I hear it’s lots of fun!… I hope you continue to enjoy your current read and your next one as well!

  3. first I just want to thank you cuz it’s your commitment to this meme that motivates me every week!!!! lol & your rating of A Face Like Glass legit scares me cuz it’s one I’ve been avoiding on my Netgalley Queue *sobs* why did I request it?!?!?! You have sold me on The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter, I’m hauling that beauty SOON! happy reading Larkin! ❤

    1. Yay! I’m always happy to help motivate! 🙂 I just love this meme because you get to keep up with what everyone’s reading and stuff. I love when I find out others are reading the same book as me or just finished it!… Ahhhh, don’t let it scare you away from it! I think my enjoyment was really affected by listening to the audiobook version of it. It’s a seriously strange and unique tale that was just hard to get into by listening to it. I think I would’ve enjoyed it more had I actually been reading it… Definitely get Alchemist’s Daughter! That book was so much fun and had me laughing out loud. I’m praying that the author turns it into a series, like was kind of hinted at in the story. There’s one character, Diana, who I freaking love to death. I want to be her best friend now, hahaha!

      1. I agree, I’m going to make it my mission to participate in this meme every week. I swear I always see your post go live on twitter as I’m getting to my cubicle lol. As soon as I see it I’m like ok Larkin, I’m coming 😂😂😂 I’m going to give the eGalley a go for Face Like Glass, something had to have appealed to me in the first place for me to have requested it lol. Alchemists Daughter I’m buying for my October haul, I have a shelf in my room dedicated to books I’ll be reading when I see the light above the arcs 😂😂😂 I wanna meet Diana now!!!

      2. Lol I just have perfect timing then! 😂… Do it! Everyone else has really seemed to enjoy it. I just picked the wrong edition, I think. I really loved her other novel, The Lie Tree!.. Yesss, you won’t regret. Diana has sass for days! 😂

  4. My biggest gripe over One of Us is Lying is that they just didn’t spend enough time in detention. I mean you can’t properly do The Breakfast Club in 15 mins 😀 I did really love it though. It’s not the best murder mystery but it’s definitely got The Breakfast Club vibes which is the most important thing. I love that film.

I’ve been desperately wanting to read The Child Thief for ages but it’s always so expensive and I can’t justify it when I have like 300 unread books on my kindle. Maybe if you read and love it I’ll have to buy it.

    1. Yes! Everything happened so quickly and then detention was over (for obvious reasons, haha!). I think what makes it so good is all of the characters. Their interactions is so Breakfast Club and I love that!

It is! I think I got my copy from BookOutlet which cheapened the price significantly. I really hope I enjoy it. I’ll be posting a review of it, for sure!
