TOPIC OF THE WEEK: Worst Reads of 2016 – A little different than top over-hyped. What books did you read this year that you absolutely couldn’t stand?
Ascension by Christopher DeSousa
Y’all, I made it through almost 100 pages in this book and literally had no idea what was going on. I mean thank you, NetGalley, for sending me a free ARC… but who the hell decided this book was fit to be publishing?!
The Siren by Kiera Cass
So I read The Selection series, or at least the first two, and found it to be pretty juvenile. And there was some extra plotline about rebels that I guess was thrown in there to cause tension and action, and it was just BLAH and literally didn’t end up doing anything. I figured I’d never read another book by Cass. But then I heard Cass was coming out with a new standalone, and I thought, I’ll give her one more try. While, The Siren had a tad more depth to it, I’ve just realized that Cass is not the writer for me. I think I originally gave this book 4 stars, but looking back on it, it probably is really closer to 2 or 3.
Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1) by Sarah J. Maas
NOW HEAR ME OUT! Y’all know I’ve really gotten into this series, but that first book.. but if we were just going off of my impressions of the first book, well that would be a different story. For me, this series is almost completely different in terms of plotline, characterization, scale, everything than it was in Throne of Glass. I really didn’t find Celaena to be all that interesting or “badass” in this first book, and I found the plot to be fairly slow in some places. However, I knew how beloved this series was and chose to continue with it. Thank goodness I did, too! Because this first book wasn’t enough to convince me it was worth it.
What were the worst books that you read this year? What did you think of the ones on my list? Leave a link to your Hype or Like Friday post in the comments below!
OMG, YES! I totally agree with you about Throne of Glass. That is one of my worst reads of 2016 as well! I haven’t read The Siren yet, but I think I’ll probably pass on it…

Yeah, I don’t know if the hype was too much or what, but it just wasn’t what I was expecting. I’m glad I stuck with the series though, because it got extremely better!

I think it was the hype that threw me off. But literally everyone tells me to continue the series, that it gets better, but I’m just veeery hesitant about it…

Yeah, I think that might’ve been my issue too. I will say that the second book is fairly fast paced but the 3rd does drag a little in the middle but ends with a bang.

Haha I’m not a big fan of the TOG series either! I’ve only read that and Crown of Midnight, but I have no desire to keep going.
I haven’t really thought about what would be my worst book – but looking at my Goodreads, I rated the following 1 star: The Siren, Zenith, Never Never Part 2, Clockwork Angel, and Mechanica. I think if I had to choose one though, it’d probably be Never Never Part 2. I just thought it was such a waste. 🙈

Oh, you read Zenith? I was wondering about how that one turned out since Sasha Alsberg “wrote” it… I think the ToG series got better with each book with Empire of Storms and Queen of Shadows being my favorites. And I loved Clockwork Angel. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it!
But I don’t think I really hated any books other than Ascension. I didn’t care for The Siren either really. Most of my other poor rated reads were just disappointments rather than anything else. Is Never Never the Peter Pan retellings?

I did! I wasn’t a big fan of it… people have likened to TOG set in space, and I really agree. The main character is supposedly ‘badass’ but not badass at all!
I’m sorry I didn’t enjoy Clockwork Angel too! I really wanted to like it because all my friends ADORE it but I just. not for me. 😦
Oops, I should have clarified! The Never Never I am referring to is by Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher!

Hmmm, I’m glad I passed on that one then!
That’s completely okay. Everyone has different reading tastes! 😊
Ahhhh, okay. I know which book you mean now. I don’t read a lot of contemporary, so I can’t comment on any Colleen Hoover novels. I probably should read more of that genre but I’m really picky with it haha! 🙈

Ha! TOG is on here. I am so shocked since you were obsessed with the last two. Lol

lol I know! But the first one was just alright for me. I’m glad I stuck with the series though because it was like night and day!

I couldn’t agree more on ToG! Where’s the badass and awesome main character? And why are there more holes in the plot than in the emmental cheese!? It was the intense joy I had snarking on it that spurred me to read the next ones, haha!

Haha yes, exactly! Thankfully the next book are so much better! 😊

I’ve made a note not to put Ascension on my TBR, ever. Thanks for the heads-up!
As ridiculous as I thought The Selection was (so very, very ridiculous), I was tempted to pick up Siren–until I saw the reviews. I’m with you in the Not Kiera Cass’s Target Audience corner.
And obviously I support your ToG mention. I can’t wait to power through to the good stuff in the series! =)

Yeah, The Siren was better than The Selection series but it’s still very juvenile with naive characters.
And you know I cannot wait for you to continue with the ToG series! 😉
