TOPIC OF THE WEEK:Β Review of the BOTM –Β Carry OnΒ by Rainbow Rowell

Okay, here’s the thing – I just started this book last night. Soooooo, yeah, I can’t really give you a full review at this time.

I had hoped to at least be much farther into this novel than I am, but Smashing Series September went a lot slower than originally planned. But the good news is that I did finishΒ The Winner’s Kiss Trilogy, The Remnant Chronicles Trilogy,Β and theΒ Dorothy Must DieΒ series. Bad news is that I didn’t even get toΒ Throne of Glass series orΒ Half Bad Trilogy,Β but there’s always October!!!Β Anyways, back to the subject of this post…

I did readΒ Fangirl. That’s been my only taste of Rowell’s books up until this point. And while I enjoyed it, I had no desire whatsoever to read anything else by her. I’m just not a fan of contemporaries – y’all should know this by now! Luckily, this book is a fantasy so I’m hoping to at least find it entertaining. I know plenty of bloggers rave about it (hence it being the Hype or Like Friday BOTM), but I’m usually a contrarian so this should be interesting.

Have you read Carry On? AreΒ you a huge Rainbow Rowell fan? What are your thoughts on this novel? Leave a link to your Hype or Like Friday post in the comments below!

  1. So I’m about 70% through Carry On right now (also didn’t finish it in time 😭) and I encourage you to keep reading if you are feeling unsure about it!! I know it’s silly and kind of ridiculous but it loses that ‘Harry potter fanfic’ feel and becomes its own story (still kind of silly, but I don’t think it’s meant to be taken too seriously). I’m really enjoying the story now and I am loving Simon and Baz! 😊

    1. I’m about 40 pages into it so far and I’m enjoying it at the moment. It definitely has a more adult feel than Harry Potter, losing a bit of that childhood innocence and adding a bit more reality – probably due to the characters being 18 years old. I’m ready for the action to start and while I haven’t met Baz yet, he’s really starting to pique my interest through the references to him. I’m glad you’re liking it so far!

  2. I actually really enjoyed it! I’m not a huge Rainbow Rowell fan (I hated Eleanor and Park) but it was pretty good. It was also the first book I ever read on my Kindle πŸ™‚

  3. Can’t wait to see your full review of this one. I read it during my hiatus, and was disappointed in it. It had some pretty neat aspects, and it wasn’t a struggle to finish, but I was really hoping for a well-developed gay romance. Simon and Baz’s relationship (like the rest of the book) had some neat aspects, but needed more fleshing out to suit me. But I’m a picky bastard. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it better! =)

    1. Yeah, I see what you mean about the relationship. I think the problem is that this book is like the final book in a fictional series, so you’re only seeing the end result of the relationship rather than watch it fully evolve over 7 years. I’m just enjoying all of the snarky comments and inner thoughts from everyone haha!
